Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is well known that rotating non-uniform flow pattern has a strong influence on high pressure centrifugal compressor vibrations. This paper shows the results of an experimental investigation on a typical centrifugal compressor stage running on an atmospheric pressure test rig. Unsteady flow was invariably observed at low flow well before surge. In order to determine the influence of the statoric components, the same impeller was repeatedly tested with the same vaneless diffuser, but varying return channel geometry. Experimental results show the strong effect exerted by the return channel, both on onset and on the behavior of unsteady flow.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive overview of fluid dynamic models and experimental results that can help solve problems in centrifugal compressors and modern techniques for a more efficient aerodynamic design. Design and Analysis of Centrifugal Compressors isacomprehensive overview of the theoretical fluid dynamic models describing the flow in centrifugal compressors and the modern techniques for the design of more efficient centrifugal compressors. The author — a noted expert in the field, with over 40 years of experience — evaluates relevant numerical and analytical prediction models for centrifugal compressors with special attention to their accuracy and limitations. Relevant knowledge from the last century is linked with new insights obtained from modern CFD. Emphasis is to link the flow structure, performance and stability to the geometry of the different compressor components. Design and Analysis of Centrifugal Compressors is an accessible resource that combines theory with experimental data and previous research with recent developments in computational design and optimization. This important resource Covers the basic information concerning fluid dynamics that are specific for centrifugal compressors and clarifies the differences with axial compressors Provides an overview of performance prediction models previously developed in combination with extra results from research conducted by the author Describes helpful numerical and analytical models for the flow in the different components in relation to flow stability, operating range and performance Includes the fundamental information for the aerodynamic design of more efficient centrifugal compressors Explains the use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for the design and analysis of centrifugal compressors Written for engineers, researchers and designers in industry as well as for academics specializing in the field, Design and Analysis of Centrifugal Compressors offers an up to date overview of the information needed for the design of more effective centrifugal compressors.

A hypothesis has been put forward that increased diffusion associated with increased stage loading increases the impeller sensitivity to the downstream disturbance. The relative Mach number has been shown to set the chordwise distribution of the unsteady load on the blade. Unsteady blade loading has been computed through a quasi two-dimensional model in which an unsteady pressure boundary condition is imposed at the impeller exit to approximate the presence of the downstream diffuser. Results of this approximate model have been shown to yield unsteady loading characteristics that are in accord with the full three-dimensional unsteady model. An implied utility of this result is that a quasi-2D approximation could be used during the design phase to approximate the unsteady loading in a timeframe that is compatible with the design environment. The effect of unsteady flow on mass flow capacity of a fluid device is eliminated as a source for over-predictions in mass flow when a steady-state approximation is used.

Book excerpt: Compressor stall is a catastrophic breakdown of the flow in a compressor, which can lead to a loss of engine power, large pressure transients in the inlet/nacelle and engine flameout. The implementation of active or passive strategies for controlling rotating stall and surge can significantly extend the stable operating range of a compressor without substantially sacrificing performance. It is crucial to identify the dynamic changes occurring in the flow field prior to rotating stall and surge in order to successfully control these events. Generally, pressure transducer measurements are made to capture the transient response of a compressor prior to rotating stall. In this investigation, Digital Particle Imaging Velocimetry (DPIV) is used in conjunction with dynamic pressure transducers to simultaneously capture transient velocity and pressure measurements in the non-stationary flow field during compressor surge. DPIV is an instantaneous, planar measurement technique which is ideally suited for studying transient flow phenomena in high speed turbomachinery and has been used previously to successfully map the stable operating point flow field in the diffuser of a high speed centrifugal compressor. Through the acquisition of both DPIV images and transient pressure data, the time evolution of the unsteady flow during surge is revealed.Wernet, Mark P. and Bright, Michelle M. and Skoch, Gary J.Glenn Research CenterCENTRIFUGAL COMPRESSORS; ROTATING STALLS; PARTICLE IMAGE VELOCIMETRY; PRESSURE MEASUREMENT; DYNAMIC PRESSURE; PRESSURE SENSORS; TRANSIENT PRESSURES; UNSTEADY FLOW...
