Download or read book Coping with Recession written by Paul A. Geroski and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-10-02 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The text examines how companies cope with the pressures which are unleashed by recessions. It is based on a large scale survey undertaken in the spring of 1993 which involved the participation of more than 600 leading UK companies. The questionnaire data was combined with a long enough time-series of data on the financial performance of most of the companies to enable us to trace effects left over from the recession in the early 1980s. The main issues examined in the book are: what makes companies vulnerable to recessionary pressures? How do companies typically respond to these pressures? How have recessionary pressures been transmitted back into labour markets and what kinds of institutional changes have they induced? Finally, do recessionary pressures stimulate innovative activity?
Book Synopsis The Currency of Ideas by : Kathleen R. McNamara
Download or read book The Currency of Ideas written by Kathleen R. McNamara and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-30 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why have the states of Europe agreed to create an Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) and a single European currency? What will decide the fate of this bold project? This book explains why monetary integration has deepened in Europe from the Bretton Woods era to the present day. McNamara argues that the development of a neoliberal economic policy consensus among European leaders in the years after the first oil crisis was crucial to stability in the European Monetary System and progress towards EMU. She identifies two factors, rising capital mobility and changing ideas about the government's proper role in monetary policymaking, as critical to the neoliberal consensus but warns that unresolved social tensions in this consensus may provoke a political backlash against EMU and its neoliberal reforms.McNamara's findings are relevant not only to European monetary integration, but to more general questions about the effects of international capital flows on states. Although this book delineates a range of constraints created by economic interdependence, McNamara rejects the notion that international market forces simply dictate government policy choice. She demonstrates that the process of neoliberal policy change is a historically dependent one, shaped by policymakers' shared beliefs and interpretations of their experiences in the global economy.

Mastering the Financial Dimension of Your Practice is organized into four sections, each addressing the unique concerns of the therapist in private practice. The authors first offer a basic course in financial planning, including an investigation into "Five Common Financial Mistakes Therapists Make" and various "solutions" to each situation. The second section explores the lifecycle of the modern therapy practice, offering best business and investing practices for each phase. The third section considers the emotional dimension involved in the development of a private practice and the financial planning of a private practitioner, written in the thoughtful language of psychotherapy. Providing a self-guided financial planning seminar, the fourth section is designed to offer a road map of action to take in establishing a financial plan. Concluding, the book is an inspirational discussion of how the therapist in private practice can create a career with meaning, fulfillment, personal satisfaction and solid financial rewards. Book excerpt: "We have continued to evolve the structure and content of this textbook in step with the rapidly changing world of international business. This includes completely revising several key chapters, including Chapter 6, on International Trade. This is entirely updated and includes new case studies covering both the trade-war between the US and China and the complex Brexit process. These and other real-world developments have made a wide range of stakeholders much more aware of the significance of global trade interdependencies than in the past. Chapter 16 on the European Union is also entirely updated to take account of Brexit and a range of new socio-political and economic events in Europe. Chapter 11 ('MNEs as Responsible Stakeholders') has been removed, making this edition more consolidated, with 20 rather than 21 chapters. In place of Chapter 11 we have inserted new sections, frameworks and case studies on responsible business throughout the book as a fundamental dimension of international businesstheory and practice across all the other chapters. New case studies, such as 'Businesses and NGOs working together on climate change' in Chapter 4, provideadditional material on this topic. Chapter 14, on 'Political risk and negotiation strategy' also features new case studies on the 'US-Venezuela oil dispute' and 'Huaweiaccused of spying'"

Book Synopsis Fixed or Flexible Exchange Rates? History and Perspectives by : Marin Muzhani
Download or read book Fixed or Flexible Exchange Rates? History and Perspectives written by Marin Muzhani and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book compares and contrasts flexible versus fixed exchange rate regimes. Beginning with their theoretical justifications, it showcases their observed advantages and disadvantages as they played out in the currency crises of the 1990s and early 2000s across Asia, Europe and Latin America. An analysis of the drivers and implications of these crises singles out fast-paced liberalization and globalization as having played central roles. Moreover it sheds light on some of the factors contributing to the 2008 financial crisis and the key monetary events in its aftermath. An accessible, yet rigorous discussion, supported by extensive evidence, helps readers reach their own conclusions regarding the respective merits of alternative exchange rate systems.
