Download or read book Unraveling the Complexities of Social Life written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes R.B. Zajonc's theories and research and places them in historical context by tracing their subsequent influence on the field of social psychology. Chapters in this volume are organized around 3 central themes in Zajonc's research. Part 1 of this volume concerns the legacy of Zajonc's "antimediational" stance concerning the role of deliberate, conscious reasoning processes in important social psychological phenomena. The 2nd main theme concerns the nature of affect and its interplay with cognitive processes. It is noted that Zajonc posed a challenge to dominant models in many areas of psychology by questioning the strongly held assumption that deliberations precede and mediate evaluations--that thinking generates feelings. The final section of the book deals with aspects of Zajonc's research that seem to contradict his "antimediational" tendency, namely, his writings on the role of personal agency. In these, there is an emphasis on personal control, cognitive manipulation and transformation of one's world, and goal striving in the face of adversity. An appendix that chronicles Zajonc's career by presenting citations to his 5 books and more than 100 journal articles and chapters is included. Book Synopsis Motivated Social Perception by : Steven J. Spencer
Download or read book Motivated Social Perception written by Steven J. Spencer and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2003-01-30 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume highlights state-of-the-art research on motivated social perception by the leaders in the field. Recently a number of researchers developed influential accounts of how motivation affects social perception. Unfortunately, this work was developed without extensive contact between the researchers, and therefore evolved into two distinct traditions. The first tradition shows that the motivation to maintain a positive self-concept and to define oneself in the social world can dramatically affect people's social perception. The second one shows that people's goals have a dramatic effect on how they see themselves and others. Motivated Social Perception shows how these two approaches often overlap and provides insights into how these two perspectives are integrated. Motivated Social Perception contains chapters on: *the effect of motivation on the activation and application of stereotypes; *self-affirmation in the evaluations of the self and others; *implicit and explicit aspects of self-esteem; *self-esteem contingencies and relational aspects of the self; *an investigation of the roots and functions of basic goals; and *extensions of self-regulatory theory. This book is intended for scholars, researchers, and advanced students interested in social perception and social cognition.

Book Synopsis The Complexity Paradox by : Kenneth Mossman
Download or read book The Complexity Paradox written by Kenneth Mossman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-08-26 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Living systems exhibit a fundamental contradiction: they are highly stable and reliable, yet they have the capacity to adapt to changing environmental conditions. This paradoxical behavior arises from the complexity of life--a high degree of order and cooperation that emerges from relatively simple interactions among cellular components. The Complexity Paradox proposes inventive, interdisciplinary approaches to maintaining health and managing and preventing disease by considering the totality of human biology, from the cellular level on up to entire populations of individuals. From the perspective of complexity, which acknowledges that there are limits to what we can know, Kenneth L. Mossman opens the door to understanding essential life processes in new and extraordinary ways. By tying together evolution, functional dynamics, and investigations into how the body processes energy and uses genetic information, Mossman's analysis expresses a unified theory of biology that fills a critical niche for future research in biology, medicine, and public health.
