Book excerpt: Many business managers start to adopt environmental-friendly activities due to pressures and concerns regarding the potential adverse environmental impacts from their regular activities. However, there is no consensus regarding whether better environmental performance can lead to superior financial performance. Academic research also shows mixed or even contradictory results, possibly due to various limitations and problems. This study builds a multilevel framework to study the complicated relationship between environmental performance and financial return and synthesize those non-consensus results in many previous studies. An overall positive relationship is found between environmental and financial performance with variations across companies and industries due to the company- and industry-level heterogeneities. A negative relationship is also identified for some firms in specific industry sectors. Moreover, the bi-directional causal relationship between environmental and financial performance also imply that it is necessary for companies to have sufficient financial resources in order to implement proactive environmental strategies and initiatives. The findings in this study make contributions to the literature, provide guidelines for managers and investors, and give implications for policymakers.

Book excerpt: We examine the roles of the outcome and process dimensions of environmental performance in determining financial performance as measured by Tobin's q. Outcomes refer to the impacts of the firm on the natural environment, while processes are the firm's actions to reduce these outcomes. We focus on a specific outcome -- carbon emissions -- and suggest that it affects Tobin's q non-linearly. We find that firms achieve the highest financial performance when their carbon performance is neither low nor high, but intermediate. We also find that environmental processes moderate this relationship as they reinforce firms' financial performance through improved stakeholder management. This mixed picture suggests that firms do not generally internalize the costs of poor carbon performance, but those that stand out in both environmental outcomes and processes achieve net financial benefits. These findings are based on a sample of carbon-intensive firms that disclosed their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through the Carbon Disclosure Project from 2007 through 2013.

Book excerpt: In the course of developing interest in environmental management practices within the organization, many companies world over now focus attention towards environmental sustainability. The purpose of this paper is to carry out a literature review of the quantitative and qualitative studies that analyzes the relationship between environmental practices and the resultant impact on financial performance. An examination of the literature was undertaken to review the quantitative and qualitative studies. A total of 130 studies were identified and examined the sample size, financial variables, environmental variables, statistical methods and also the main findings of the researchers. Results were mixed and varied, ranging from positive to negative and in some cases with no result, inconsistent, often contradictory and statistically insignificant in relationship. Findings suggested that 52% studies of selected sample show positive relations and the rest 48% still remaining with negative mix or no relationship. The inconsistency is due to the absence of clear framework that explains what actually constitutes environmental practices and how to determine their outcome, measures of financial performance, sample composition, time period and control variable. Consequently, it is more difficult to identify general relationship between different indicators of environment and financial performance. The paper offers interesting implications for managers, pointing out that a real commitment to green management may result in a positive influence on financial performance. Therefore it is critical to build a scope for future research to achieve better and more consistent results.

Book excerpt: Purpose: This paper outlines the impact that energy companies exert on the environment and the subsequent effect on financial performance of the energy companies. A major plank of this paper is whether the Kyoto protocol of which New Zealand is a signatory and Australia who is not a signatory have an impact on the environmental performance and outcomes of the energy companies. Design/Methodology/Approach: This paper adopts a content analysis of financial statements of selected energy company annual reports. The analysis examines financial and sustainability reports where available from a period of 1996-2006. This paper follows a quantitative paradigm. Findings: The analysis indicates that there is a distinct correlation between the environmental performance of the energy company and subsequent financial performance, pursuant to H1. It was found that the descriptive, multivariate and clustering statistics show that good economic performance does not drive the environmental performance of a company, but certainly has an effect on it, pursuant to H2. It was found that the descriptive, multivariate and clustering statistics show that the ratification of international regulations (such as Kyoto Protocol) does not make any difference in environmental performance between regulation ratified and non-ratified countries, pursuant to H3. Originality/Value: This paper it is anticipated will be a valuable tool to researchers, students and practitioners' who are seeking insight and verification that there is direct benefit to those energy companies that are socially responsible and are committed to environment improvements and change.

In particular, it reviews the empirical evidence on this effect. Conceptually, stronger environmental performance may lead to worse or better financial performance. The empirical literature generally finds a positive link from good environmental performance to financial success. However, many studies reveal a negative link. Given this mixed evidence, literature reviews and meta-analyses help to discern the conditions under which better environmental performance prompts financial success or disappointment. Similarly, this review organizes the empirical evidence by the specific measures of environmental performance and financial performance to discern which links are positive or negative. Lastly, the review identifies shortcomings in the empirical literature and offers suggestions for future research. For example, analyses should more fully explore the factors shaping the links from environmental to financial performance, such as firm size and economy type (e.g., mature market).

Book excerpt: Drawing upon stakeholder theory and the resource-based-view of a firm, we investigate the moderating role of operations efficiency of firms on the link between environmental and financial performance. Extant literature has highlighted that operations efficiency is closely associated with the environmental/financial performance of firms, but there is no empirical study that has investigated how operations efficiency affects the links between environmental and financial performances. We draw on the stakeholder theory to argue that environmental performance could be related to financial performance, and use the resource-based-view to argue that operations efficiency could act as a moderator of this relationship. Using data on the environmental/financial performance of Britain's most admired companies, we have found evidence for the moderating impact of operations efficiency. Our results are useful to managers in that they show that improvements in operations efficiency in a company can also help improve environmental/ financial performance and vice versa.
