Book Synopsis Romans: Three Exegetical Interpretations and the History of Reception by : Daniel Patte
Download or read book Romans: Three Exegetical Interpretations and the History of Reception written by Daniel Patte and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-07-26 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first of a three-volume work, Daniel Patte presents three very different critical exegeses of Romans 1, arguing that all are equally legitimate and hermeneutically plausible. By expanding upon and respecting the exegeses of many erudite scholars of the last two centuries, Patte concludes that three families of vastly different critical interpretations are fully justified: traditional philological and epistolary studies; rhetorical and sociocultural studies; and figurative studies of the “coherence” of Paul's teaching. Arising from a long-standing interdisciplinary investigation of many receptions of Romans in light of recent diversification of exegetical methodologies, Patte concludes that the interpretation of a scriptural text necessarily involves making a choice among equally legitimate and plausible alternatives; and second, that this choice is always contextual and ethical. When these points are denied (by failing to respect the interpretations of others and absolutizing one's interpretation), instead of being a scriptural blessing, Romans becomes a deadly weapon against others – heretics, Jews (Shoah), and many others. The result is a threefold commentary of Romans 1 that is unique in its scope and thorough-going exegesis.

Book excerpt: In the sordid streets of Victorian London, unwanted desire flares between two bitter enemies brought together by a deadly secret. Crusading journalist Nathaniel Roy is determined to expose spiritualists who exploit the grief of bereaved and vulnerable people. First on his list is the so-called Seer of London, Justin Lazarus. Nathaniel expects him to be a cheap, heartless fraud. He doesn’t expect to meet a man with a sinful smile and the eyes of a fallen angel—or that a shameless swindler will spark his desires for the first time in years. Justin feels no remorse for the lies he spins during his séances. His gullible clients simply bore him. Hostile, disbelieving, utterly irresistible Nathaniel is a fascinating challenge. And as their battle of wills and wits heats up, Justin finds he can’t stop thinking about the man who’s determined to ruin him. But Justin and Nathaniel are linked by more than their fast-growing obsession with one another. They are both caught up in an aristocratic family’s secrets, and Justin holds information that could be lethal. As killers, fanatics, and fog close in, Nathaniel is the only man Justin can trust—and, perhaps, the only man he could love. Their opposing vocations and radically different backgrounds create a powerful and fascinating conflict. Although this book can be read as a stand-alone, [K. J.] Charles continues to build tension and add menace by deepening the overarching mystery introduced in the first novel. The series is definitely building to a firecracker conclusion.”—RT Book Reviews “An Unnatural Vice is a tremendous follow-up to the first book in the Sins of the City trilogy. Fans of the series—and of K. J. Charles—will love the romance between Nathaniel and Justin, and the Taillefer family mystery. . . . Book Synopsis It's Time to Call a Spade a Spade by : David Walker
Download or read book It's Time to Call a Spade a Spade written by David Walker and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2009-04 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major culture war is raging in America. The battleground includes issues such as abortion, homosexuality, and evolution. The debate continues over whether America was established as a Christian nation and what this thing called "separation of church and state" really means. Some even debate the truth and trustworthiness of the greatest book ever written, the Bible. Most Christians instinctively know what is right but are ill equipped to stand for it, because they do not have the facts. This book will give you the facts that support the truth and thus equip you with the tools you need to stand for what's right. It is time to cut through the prevailing barrage of misinformation and stand for truth based upon the facts. It is time to look clearly at the issues that threaten the fabric of American society and to rise up and call a spade a spade. David Walker is a teacher who became a pastor. He pastored the same church for twenty-eight years, during which time the church grew from 55 to over 500 members. He also started a Christian school that grew to over 500 students. He has a bachelor's degree and a master's degree and has completed all the work for his doctorate except for the dissertation. For twelve years, David taught American history, world history, government, and economics in high schools in Indiana, Ohio, and Florida. His doctoral work consisted of a major in American history with cognates in political science and educational psychology. David has traveled extensively preaching crusades and training pastors on four continents. He has conducted crusades and pastor-training seminars in a number of places in India and Nigeria. He has ministered in crusades and churches in Brazil and Benin and written training materials for house church leaders in China.
Book Synopsis The Bible and Homosexual Practice by : Robert A. J. Gagnon

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gagnon offers the most thorough analysis to date of the biblical texts relating to homosexuality. He demonstrates why attempts to classify the Bible’s rejection of same-sex intercourse as irrelevant for our contemporary context fail to do justice to the biblical texts and to current scientific data. Gagnon’s book powerfully challenges attempts to identify love and inclusivity with affirmation of homosexual practice. . . . the most sophisticated and convincing examination of the biblical data for our time. —Jürgen Becker, Professor of New Testament, Christian-Albrechts University

Trigger Warning: *** Contains some mature situations, (self-harm, incest, death, blood) and is recommended for 18+ *** ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ◆ What readers are saying about The Unnatural Brethren: ★★★★★ Where do I start? It's gonna be a challenge, I want to gush a fountain of spoilers! This book should be filed away under "Guilty Pleasures." Our hero, Ivan, is a field of wild oats, begging to be sown. While his sister Alisa is the calm and the storm. There were so many minor characters with unforgettable personalities, I found myself getting attached to every new person that popped up. (Except one, he knows who he is, and take it from me, he had it coming) The writing style is solid. The author's style was passionate and fast-paced, I sailed through this book... partly because of the pace, and partly because the drama and intrigue kept me hooked all the way through. I especially appreciated all of the traveling in this book. I enjoyed taking a tour of London, Paris, and Venice all from the comfort of my couch. ☆☆☆☆☆, I loved this book! Now if you'll excuse me, I have a sequel to buy. ★★★★★ Ivan Lockhart is the definition of a romantic anti-hero. His heart is the right place, his life is a constant strife to do the right thing, yet circumstances have shaped him into something he abhors. There's a sense of cruel fate that haunts him. Even as a child, surviving death becomes a curse of sorts, and, in his need to be loved and accepted, he forges unconventional relationships, dragging those who hold near and dear into his dark world. And this all happens before the supernatural even shows up in this story. ★★★★★ An amazing read from an amazing author. I love how she combines the paranormal with the historical. So perfect and I can't wait for her next read!! __________________________________________________________________________________________ ◆ Excerpt from Written in Blood: “It haunted me from a distance. Swathed in a thick veil of fog, with but a few old trees looming above, the island appeared desolated and dead. An overwhelming sense of despair crept behind my neck as we reached the shore. Thousands of men, women, and children had been condemned to live the last of their days here, infected by the plague. Dragged away from their homes, here, they suffered their agonizing illness, shunned by society, exiled from everything they knew and held dear.” Fans of the Vampire Chronicles and A Discovery of Witches will love The Unnatural Brethren series!

Book Synopsis Kissed the Girls and Made Them Cry by : Lisa Bevere
Download or read book Kissed the Girls and Made Them Cry written by Lisa Bevere and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2002-04-14 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How far can I go? It's the question of a generation wanting straight answers. Often the very questions we ask reveal our hearts better than anything else. In Kissed the Girls and Made Them Cry, Lisa Bevere tackles these tough issues by moving us from rules to relationship. There is no question we need a renewal of purity, but what we're doing is not working. How far can you go? Ask yourself: What do you ultimately want? Immediate and temporary gratification that wanes with the passage of time? Or passion and exclusive intimacy that endures and intensifies? God wants to move us beyond the restraint of the law (which arouses sin) and plant us into a garden of longing -- where our sexuality and passion is carefully guarded and cultivated until the time for its awakening. This is a book for every daughter in waiting and every woman who has never known desire in her life and marriage.
Download or read book Uncovered written by Rod Tucker and published by Kregel Publications. This book was released on 2014-01-29 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greg was homeless. As he walked through the park one day, he was surrounded by people. Good people. Caring people. Christian people. People doing ministry. But people totally oblivious to Greg. No one saw him, talked to him, noticed him, or tried to minister to him. The Christians were preoccupied—working hard on the ministry they were putting together—a ministry intended to provide help and healing to the most vulnerable in their city, a ministry designed to reach . . . the homeless! How do Christians, benefactors of the overwhelming grace of an immeasurably generous God, fail so miserably at showing and distributing—of all things—grace? In voice and style evocative of Donald Miller and Scot McKnight, yet with a message all his own, Rod Tucker explores how we Christians have become masters of self-deceptive and fake moral living. Just like Adam and Eve, we don’t want anyone to know we are spiritually naked. But covering up around God denies us the freedom of his grace. Until we can be honest with ourselves, honest with God, and honest with others, daily grace will continue to elude us, either as gift received or as gift given. We remain trapped in our Botox spirituality until we come to grips with exactly who we are.

Combining both traditions, early bishops, Church Fathers, and theologians added innovations that contributed to the establishment of a unique systematic theology (dogma) that became “Christianity.” Throughout the text, readers are encouraged to consider how the ways early Christians integrated their worldviews, politics, and daily lives can help articulate their own “systems of meaning” in the modern world.
