Book excerpt: Alex was made redundant from his top City job a year ago and is moving into the pretty Lodge Lane in the village of Hartfield to downsize and release some capital. At 49 his chances of getting another job in London are looking slim. He moves in with his Bentley, his wine cellar and no sign of a plan B. His neighbour Chloe is a European Fund Manager with a divorce behind her and a male dominated City career ahead of her. Her jet setting lifestyle gives her plenty of excuses to face facts; she's lonely. On the other side, Becky has been moved into the lane by social services with her two year old to escape her violent ex. Life is pretty difficult for Becky but gardening is a joy to her and with her green fingers the garden is where her heart sings. The other side of Becky you've got Sheila and George, lived there forever, George is now retired. And that's the problem for Sheila. Finally they have to face up to the cracks in their marriage and for Sheila it proves a difficult journey. So you see these neighbours haven't got a lot in common. Funny how things turn out though.

Reminiscent of Sir Peter Scott's famous travel diaries for its vivid descriptions, and deft illustrations of life in the wild, Nicolette's colourful story-telling draws you into her world so completely that you soon feel you are with her at the wild edges of the human world. Callum Roberts, Professor of Marine Conservation, Chief Scientific Advisor to Blue Planet ll, WWF UK Ambassador, author, scuba diver. A zoologist's personal encounters with living diversity, journeying into animal lives on beaches, cliffs, desert and forest shores; in cold oceans, warm seas and tropical coral reefs; and in skies above. Connections in life's incredible jigsaw are unravelled - from penguins to parrots, plankton to pelicans, whales to wallabies, whale sharks to wombats, butterflyfish to bioluminescence, dolphin-talk with dogs, and more. In these self-supporting webs of life, the mighty depend on the miniature, ancient meets modern, and mystery detective trails lead to the unexpected. Whilst the animals take the starring roles, human lives, past and present, intertwine with theirs as part of this living jigsaw whilst life affirming volunteers, park wardens and research scientists are now replacing the pieces to make a biodiverse and sustainable future.

Book excerpt: Offshoot includes essays in life writing methodologies and approaches, as well as a series of creative work-poetry and prose-that engages with current life writing. This collection highlights the development and influence of the genre in the twenty-first century. Starting from the premise that life writing is a significant component of both contemporary artistic practice and scholarship, Offshoot provides a necessary re-evaluation of the mode, its contemporary sub-generic incarnations, as well as methodological and practical approaches. The book presents research on a wide range of approaches, including both traditional areas-such as literature and creative writing-and areas that have not previously been associated with life writing scholarship. With its multifaceted readings, Offshoot signals a shift in life writing research tending towards an expansive, hybrid, experimental, and rhizomic approach. Book excerpt: Rhea Barnett has lost her mother but, despite a healthy period of grieving with her family, is unable to resolve her feelings. So she travels to India seeking spiritual plurality. There she meets an Australian who is unlike any male she has met before. But it is not long before Rhea uncovers in Reiner the same insecurities as the English males of her past. In the end she leaves him, stoned and dancing around a self-immolating backpacker on a beach in Southern India, and travels on to join her best friend Belinda in Australia. There Rhea completes a novel she has begun to find during her travels through India, in which a young member of the resistance in the Third World War, Michael teams up with the punk Bozzo and heroin addict Sheena to plan a revelation to the world of a multinational corporate plot in collusion with global government. In the process, the hapless Michael discovers that the story he thought he was in is about as far from the centre of the narrative as he could have imagined.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life is never dull when you have neighbours! Neighbours – we all have them. Whether they’re amazing or the bane of your life, everyone has a story about them. Have you ever had a disagreement with a neighbour? Have your neighbours ever woken you up shouting? Slamming doors? Revving a car? Do you avoid your neighbours because they’re irritating, boring or nosy? Do you sometimes wish you had normal neighbours? Or do your neighbours go out of their way to help you? If you answered ‘yes’ to any of these, then this book is for you! Written with humour, insight and perception, this book explores our relationships with our neighbours, how they work, why they break down and the strategies we all employ to survive. An Annoyance of Neighbours will help you to identify and classify your neighbours, discover how to remedy a relationship and take the quiz to find out what kind of neighbour you are. This book will appeal to anyone who is curious about their neighbours, as well as those who wish to ease unresolved tension with theirs.

Book excerpt: There are those who walk in the light, they live by the rules and contribute to society. They hold their heads high and look people in the eye. Then there are those who dwell in the darkness, they trawl through the underbelly of society. These people determine their own rules. They live by the gun and expect they will die the same way. Life for Sienna was the latter. Born into a world most people could never imagine. Born to take life away at the end of her gun. A life in the shadows. A cold-hard, killer. Moses, the youngest of the Gargliano men, always plagued by their shadow. Career minded, he walks the straight and narrow path, determined to shake off the reputation that hangs over his family. What happens when these two worlds collide?

This book was released on 2013-12-19 with total page 816 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cambridge Yearbook of European Legal Studies provides a forum for the scrutiny of significant issues in EU Law, the law of the European Convention on Human Rights, and Comparative Law with a 'European' dimension, and particularly those issues which have come to the fore during the year preceding publication. The contributions appearing in the collection are commissioned by the Centre for European Legal Studies (CELS) Cambridge, a research centre in the Law Faculty of the University of Cambridge specialising in European legal issues. The papers presented are at the cutting edge of the fields which they address, and reflect the views of recognised experts drawn from the University world, legal practice, and the institutions of both the EU and its Member States. Inclusion of the comparative dimension brings a fresh perspective to the study of European law, and highlights the effects of globalisation of the law more generally, and the resulting cross fertilisation of norms and ideas that has occurred among previously sovereign and separate legal orders. The Cambridge Yearbook of European Legal Studies is an invaluable resource for those wishing to keep pace with legal developments in the fast moving world of European integration.
