Yep, that was me. I learned the ropes and I knew what I needed to do to succeed at school. Overall, learning the ropes was pretty straightforward. I knew what was expected of me in school: get good grades, follow the rules, know the answer, and don't cheat. I knew what was expected of me outside of school: don't waste time and don't play silly games. I certainly knew that when it came to my well-being and education, teachers and parents were always right. I embodied these expectations: therefore, my teachers, my parents, and my schoolmates saw me as a "smart" kid.Working for over 20 years in education, I now understand that schools are designed well for someone like me, but schools are not designed well for the large percentage of the population. I followed the rules and reaped the benefits of being treated as a "smart" kid. Yet, students should not be made to feel as though they are the sum total of their GPA and transcript. Learning is universal, accessible to everyone, and hiding in plain sight rather than within the walls of school. Learning is all around us if we look for it - and being able to learn and seeking out learning opportunities - will get you further in life than any good grade ever will.Over the course of my life, I've reflected on the expectations that guided my behavior throughout my schooling?and I have decided to unlearn every single one. For example, I thought that I needed to get good grades to learn; however, in the college course that changed my life I received one of my worst grades ever. The professor expected me to regurgitate his ideas, but I was inspired and wanted to create my own. Learning the ropes helped me to succeed in school - but it's what I have gained by unlearning the ropes that has served me better in life.
