Book Synopsis Islamic Banking by : Mr.Kangni Kpodar
Download or read book Islamic Banking written by Mr.Kangni Kpodar and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2010-08-01 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates the determinants of the pattern of Islamic bank diffusion around the world using country-level data for 1992 - 2006. The analysis illustrates that income per capita, share of Muslims in the population and status as an oil producer are linked to the development of Islamic banking, as are economic integration with Middle Eastern countries and proximity to Islamic financial centers. Interest rates have a negative impact on Islamic banking, reflecting the implicit benchmark for Islamic banks. The quality of institutions does not matter, probably because the often higher hurdle set by Shariah law trumps the quality of local institutions in most countries. The 9/11 attacks were not important to the diffusion of Islamic banking; but they coincided with rising oil prices, which are a significant factor in the diffusion of Islamic banking. Islamic banks also appear to be complements to, rather than substitutes for, conventional banks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its first publication in 1960, this famous work by Yusuf al-Qaradawi has enjoyed a huge readership in the Muslim world, and has been translated into many languages. It dispels the ambiguities surrounding the Sharī‘ah to fulfil the essential needs of the Muslims in this age. It clarifies the ḥalāl (lawful) and why it is ḥalāl, and the ḥarām (prohibited) and why it is ḥarām, referring to the Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Prophet. It answers questions which may face the Muslims today, and refutes the ambiguities and lies about Islam. Dr al-Qaradawi delves into the authentic references in Islamic jurisprudence, extracting judgements of interest to contemporary Muslims in the areas of worship, business dealings, family life, food and drink, dress and ornaments, patterns of behaviour, individual and group relations, family and social ethics, habits and social customs.

Book Synopsis Islamic Finance in Europe by : Valentino Cattelan
Download or read book Islamic Finance in Europe written by Valentino Cattelan and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Highlighting the impact of current globalization on financial markets, this topical book challenges the universality of Western property rights and interprets Islamic finance in Europe as part of a plural financial system, where different conceptions of economic justice(s) co-exist and influence each other. The contributing authors analyse key economic development and social integration issues from an Islamic perspective and outline the European approach to accommodating Islamic finance, with particular regard to the peculiarities of individual nation-states. Set in this context, the book presents financial pluralism as a device to enhance a level playing field in the global marketplace, as well as to foster a plural open society. Providing a comprehensive and methodological guide to Islamic finance in Europe, this book will prove an illuminating and informative read for academics, students and policymakers with an interest in the impact on financial regulation of an increasingly globalized world.
Book Synopsis Islamic Finance by : Mahmoud A. El-Gamal
Download or read book Islamic Finance written by Mahmoud A. El-Gamal and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-07-03 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of the practice of Islamic finance and the historical roots that define its modes of operation. The focus of the book is analytical and forward-looking. It shows that Islamic finance exists mainly as a form of rent-seeking legal-arbitrage. In every aspect of finance - from personal loans to investment banking, and from market structure to corporate governance - Islamic finance aims to replicate in Islamic forms the substantive functions of contemporary financial instruments, markets, and institutions. By attempting to replicate the substance of contemporary financial practice using pre-modern contract forms, Islamic finance has arguably failed to serve the objectives of Islamic law. This book proposes refocusing Islamic finance on substance rather than form. This approach would entail abandoning the paradigm of 'Islamization' of every financial practice. It would also entail reorienting the brand-name of Islamic finance to emphasize issues of community banking, micro-finance, and socially responsible investment.
Book Synopsis Operative Principles of Islamic Derivatives by : Andreas Jobst
Download or read book Operative Principles of Islamic Derivatives written by Andreas Jobst and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2012-03-01 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Derivatives are few and far between in countries where the compatibility of financial transactions with Islamic law requires the development of shari'ah-compliant structures. Islamic finance is governed by the shari'ah, which bans speculation and gambling, and stipulates that income must be derived as profits from the shared generation of goods and services between counterparties rather than interest or a guaranteed return. The paper explains the fundamental legal principles underpinning Islamic finance with a view towards developing a cohesive theory of derivatives subject to shari'ahprinciples. After critically reviewing accepted contracts and the scholastic debate surrounding existing financial innovation in this area, the paper offers an axiomatic perspective on a principle-based permissibility of derivatives under Islamic law.

Book Synopsis Contemporary Interpretation of Islamic Law by : Ahmed Affi
Download or read book Contemporary Interpretation of Islamic Law written by Ahmed Affi and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2014 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book does not champion some of the popular misconceptions surrounding Islamic law. It does not advocate stoning to death; amputating the hands of thieves; call for the death penalty for those who leave the fold of Islam; or urge Muslims to save their souls from Hellfire by shunning bank loans for fear of incurring interest. What it does advocate is less sensationalistic, but it is in line with the real interpretation of Islamic law.Contemporary Interpretation of Islamic Law is divided into thirteen chapters. The majority of the chapters concentrate on criminal aspects of Islamic law, while the remainder concern themselves with social issues. Each chapter – where possible – provides background information of the topic under discussion and then proceeds to analyse, examine and critique the contentious parts of the topic, looking at the arguments from all sides and the evidence put forward by each side before arriving at a conclusion. The book is accompanied by a glossary. “Our work differs from other published titles on Islamic law as it takes into account the different aspects of the Qur’an. The Qur’an employs many parables, allegories and metaphors to highlight important messages for Mankind, yet jurists often make the common mistake of either omitting or misinterpreting these devices, resulting in inaccurate and often unlawful rulings which have direct and indirect effects on both Muslims and non-Muslims alike. It is hoped that our work will create a better understanding of the correct interpretation of the Qur’an and Islamic law,” says authors Ahmed Affi and Hassan Affi. Contemporary Interpretation of Islamic Law will appeal to those with an interest is Islam and Islamic law, though no specialist knowledge of Arabic or Islamic law is required.
Book Synopsis Islamic Law and Finance by : Frank E. Vogel
Download or read book Islamic Law and Finance written by Frank E. Vogel and published by BRILL. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mirroring the expansion of wealth in the Middle East and Asia and a surge in Islamic self-identity, Islamic banking practices have either become the law of the land or coexist and compete with Western practices in at least six countries. A growing number of institutions and mutual funds (akin to Western ''socially responsible'' funds) have established Islamic investment and other practices to cater to this burgeoning market. Because of its prevalence, practitioners in every banking-related area must familiarize themselves with current Islamic finance practices in order to do business with Muslim clients and to engage in cross-border financing. Injunctions from the "Qur'an and the sayings of Prophet Muhammed have generated a web of interrelated norms which prohibit Islamic financiers from engaging in transactions that involve interest "(riba) and speculation "(gharar). "Islamic Law and Finance describes the dynamic set of Islamically-sanctioned ways financiers can transacat business.
