Book excerpt: During the past few years, groups like the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, Center for Education have been placing great emphasis on the significance of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education. In brief, the US is seen as falling behind the rest of the world in science and technology education. In response, the curricula have been revised in many educational institutions and school districts across the country. It is clear that for STEM to be successful, other community organizations, most particularly libraries, need to be closely involved in the process. Library staff realize the importance of getting involved in STEM education, but many have difficulty finding comprehensive information that will help them plan and successfully implement STEM direction in their organization. This book is designed to meet that need. It is timely and relevant. How to STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Education in Libraries is by and for libraries who are involved in contributing efforts into advancing these subjects. It is organized in 9 parts including funding, grant writing, community partnerships, outreach, research, and examples of specific programming activities. Authors are drawn from the professional staffs of educational institutions, libraries, and non-profit organizations such as science museums. The book contains eight parts, each emphasizing a different aspect of how to succeed with STEM. Part 1 emphasizes how hands-on activities that are both fun and educational can be used to further STEM awareness. Parts 2 and 3 contain chapters on the uniting of STEM with Information Literacy. Innovative collection development ideas are discussed in Part 4 and Part 5 focuses on research and publishing. Outreach is the theme of Part 6 and the programs described in these chapters offer an array of ways to connect with students of all ages. The final section of How to STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Education in Libraries addresses the funding of these programs. Librarians of all types will be pleased to discover easy-to-implement suggestions for collaborative efforts, many rich and diverse programming ideas, strategies for improving reference services and library instruction to speakers of English as a second language, marketing and promotional tips designed to welcome multicultural patrons into the library, and much more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of Ellis Mount's University Science and Engineering Libraries pioneered in this specialized branch of library service. This new edition covers all aspects of science and technical libraries at both colleges and universities. Problems and techniques of management, technical services, user services, collection management, and physical facilities are discussed in detail. More importantly, this edition has been thoroughly updated and includes greater emphasis on computer applications, networks, consortia, and the use of the latest technology. As part of the research for this second edition, the author visited campuses throughout the United States and Canada to study their libraries first hand. His experiences have enabled him to identify the latest trends and developments in the profession. Included in the text are layouts of several science-technical libraries and a chapter on facility planning. Selected references are found at the end of each chapter. A survey of librarians and users on sixteen campuses--a virtual state-of-the-art report on current practices in science-technical libraries--is included as an appendix.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of high-temperature materials in current and future applications, including silicone materials for handling hot foods and metal alloys for developing high-speed aircraft and spacecraft systems, has generated a growing interest in high-temperature technologies. High Temperature Materials and Mechanisms explores a broad range of issues related to high-temperature materials and mechanisms that operate in harsh conditions. While some applications involve the use of materials at high temperatures, others require materials processed at high temperatures for use at room temperature. High-temperature materials must also be resistant to related causes of damage, such as oxidation and corrosion, which are accelerated with increased temperatures. This book examines high-temperature materials and mechanisms from many angles. It covers the topics of processes, materials characterization methods, and the nondestructive evaluation and health monitoring of high-temperature materials and structures. It describes the application of high temperature materials to actuators and sensors, sensor design challenges, as well as various high temperature materials and mechanisms applications and challenges. Utilizing the knowledge of experts in the field, the book considers the multidisciplinary nature of high temperature materials and mechanisms, and covers technology related to several areas including energy, space, aerospace, electronics, and metallurgy. Supplies extensive references at the end of each chapter to enhance further study Addresses related science and engineering disciplines Includes information on drills, actuators, sensors and more A comprehensive resource of information consolidated in one book, this text greatly benefits students in materials science, aerospace and mechanical engineering, and physics. It is also an ideal resource for professionals in the industry.

After introducing the idea that individuals tend to choose college majors and occupations in alignment with their learning style and personality characteristics, the book presents background on the Kolb Learning Styles model, the 16 PF (Personality Factor) framework, and the Big Five/Narrow Traits personality framework. It then reviews extant knowledge on the learning styles and personality characteristics of scientists, engineers and librarians. Next, the book considers general approaches to the personalization of instruction to learning styles and personality characteristics, opportunities for such personalization in science and engineering library instruction, and science and engineering librarian attitudes towards, and approaches to, this type of personalization of instruction. Best Publication Award - ASEE Engineering Library Division Considers teaching and individual differences within science and engineering librarianship Offers a balanced and critical account of the adaptation of library instruction to learning styles and personality characteristics Cites the dynamic instruction/adaptive teaching literature Discusses opportunities and suggestions for incorporating personalization into science and engineering library instruction
