Book Synopsis The Prints of Warrington Colescott by : Mary Weaver Chapin
Download or read book The Prints of Warrington Colescott written by Mary Weaver Chapin and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1940s, printmaker Warrington Colescott has trained his brilliant artistic eye on the fashions and foibles of human behavior. A satirist in the tradition of William Hogarth, Francisco Goya, Honoré Daumier, and George Grosz, Colescott utilizes his sharp wit and vivid imagination to interpret contemporary and historical events, from the personal to the public, the local to the international. He is especially noted for his exceptional command of complex printmaking techniques and for his innovative approach to intaglio printing. The Prints of Warrington Colescott: A Catalogue Raisonné, 1948-2008 is the first fully illustrated catalogue to document Colescott's extensive and varied graphic career. Author and curator Mary Weaver Chapin has worked closely with Colescott, interviewed him at length, and had unique access to his private papers and archives. She documents his personal and artistic life in a detailed biographic sketch, and her extensive essay "Research Printmaker and Mad-Dog Attack Artist" examines the evolution of his printmaking career, focusing on his technique, iconography, and his place in American printmaking. The catalogue documents and depicts all 359 of Colescott's editioned prints, providing title, date, media, dimensions, and selected exhibition history and collections for each print, along with comments and anecdotes by Chapin and Colescott. Published in collaboration with the Milwaukee Art Museum * The exhibition "Warrington Colescott: Cabaret, Comedy & Satire" will open at the Milwaukee Art Museum in June 2010. Book excerpt: This lively and colorfully illustrated book documents Wisconsin folk traditions in the 1990s: building Harley motorcycles and Ojibwe birch bark canoes; gatherings at neighborhood taverns, polka dances, the Mexican neighborhood store, or the sturgeon-spearing shanties on Lake Winnebago; working on a dairy farm or at a lakeside fish market; brokering a Hmong marriage or restoring the Dickeyville Grotto; and "cheeseheads" tailgating at Lambeau field before a Green Bay Packers football game. Written for a general readership by folklorists, cultural anthropologists, and historians, this book resulted from the Wisconsin Folklife Festivals staged by the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., and by the Wisconsin Arts Board in Madison, Wisconsin, in honor of the 1998 Wisconsin Sesquicentennial.

Book excerpt: John Steuart Curry: Inventing the Middle West is the first comprehensive study in more than fifty years of this member of the great triumvirate of American Regionalists: Thomas Hart Benton, Curry, and Grant Wood. It revives the reputation of one of the most important and controversial artists of the first half of the twentieth century, whose paintings of farm life in his native Kansas (including baptisms and tornados), of the circus, of American history, and of the American scene in general were dramatically eclipsed by the ascendancy of abstract art and the New York School at midcentury. 68 colour & 114 b/w illustrations

Book Synopsis The Road I Call Home by : Randy Bacon
Download or read book The Road I Call Home written by Randy Bacon and published by . This book was released on 2021-06-15 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE ROAD I CALL HOME is a significant book spotlighting the breathtaking photographic portraits of the homeless and their stories. Through the lens of multi award winning, prominent photographer, filmmaker and humanitarian, Randy Bacon, THE ROAD I CALL HOME beautifully presents over 200 pages of portraits and narratives from the exhibition, which has traveled to numerous museums, galleries and venues nationwide. THE ROAD I CALL HOME features simple, direct, emotive, casual studio portraits that emphasize the beauty, dignity and integrity of the homeless and is accompanied by heartfelt narratives, personally told by each person. The unforgettable photography and stories are rooted in compassion and belief that, as a community, we can approach homelessness by choosing to see the beauty of each person in front of us - rather than the issues that overwhelm us. Homelessness is an issue that can easily overwhelm us. You don't have to go far in everyday life to literally come face-to-face with homelessness. We see the stark reality as we drive through our communities, as we walk down our streets and within the media. We see the heartbreaking struggle of too many people that don't have a house, which stirs emotion in each of us. Homelessness is an issue of humanity - over 600,000 people are homeless in the United States, a staggering 150 million humans living homeless worldwide and almost 2 billion living with inadequate housing. THE ROAD I CALL HOME looks to build new awareness about our relationship to homelessness and to each other - to give a voice to the voiceless and begin conversations that will be catalysts for people to get involved. THE ROAD I CALL HOME challenges viewers to look at homelessness with eyes of love and compassion, not negative judgment - to inspire people to simply acknowledge those in need, trusting that we are the same and just wanting to love and be loved. When we take time to listen to another person's journey, we begin the process of turning a stranger into a friend and opening our hearts to another human being.
