Thousands upon thousands of years have elapsed, and of all the theologians, philosophers and men of science who have concerned themselves with the subject, not one has hitherto found the key of the universal mysteries. Whether or not I have found this key, I leave to the calm judgment of the reader, after a careful study of this book.

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1896 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER III. MATTER AND FORCE: THE UNIVERSE IN ITS POTENTIALITY AND ACTUALITY Preface. To analyze or criticise all ideas, all hypotheses, theories and systems which have been meditated and composed on the field of these sublime subjects, "Matter and Force," from the ancient philosophers until the latest scientists, is an impossibility for a single person in a single book; and perhaps there are many of them which have no value for any analytical or critical review, and no importance to warrant spending a little space or a little time on them. But, as I venture to establish a complete theory, containing the pure conception of the universe entire, and to disclose the whole mysteries of nature, and at the same time the brains of men are filled and packed up with all the fanciful and fantastical notions of all the different and various schools, so that it is of great difficulty to bring in something clear and pure before those brains are purified, I, therefore, am compelled to analyze and criticise many ideas, hypotheses or theories of the most and the greatest philosophers and scientists, from the ancient till the modern times, in order to purify the brains of men, to enable them to conceive the eternal truth of the universe. In ancient times, Democritus was the founder of the atomic theory, a theory of the constitution of bodies, which asserts that they are made up of atoms, indivisible parts of matter; that matter, through which all bodies of the universe appear before us, consists of those small, indivisible particles, called atoms. His opponent asserts that all bodies are infinitely divisible, and that there are no atoms, small indivisible particles, in existence. Anaxagoras propounded the continuity of matter, under the name of the...

Book excerpt: For all of our technological advancement, many mysteries still escape our understanding, leaving us in wonder and awe. It seems the more we learn the more questions arise. This may be because those new questions are attendant with a newfound awareness. This book explores a number of universal mysteries I have found intriguing. Ever since I can remember, I was intensely interested in science and how it impacts all our lives. I have deep admiration for the monumental intellect and effort those great scientists contribute for all our benefit and enlightenment. Reading scientific material, trying to grasp its abstract concepts can be quite challenging. As an example, when I made a valiant, however incomplete attempt to read physicist Brian Greene's book, The Elegant Universe, it was a difficult but rewarding experience because in the process he helped me understand the concept of why time slows down when we approach the speed of light. It was both enlightening and gratifying. The articles included here discuss the science behind these mysteries in an effort to come a little closer to the truth of what is. Scientific research is a never-ending investigation and adventure. It's a window into determining how our physical world works, doing so with a discipline to willingly, enthusiastically and objectively go wherever the evidence leads. I hope this book will be an adventure for you to read, as it was for me to write. I wrote it with the intention of making it interesting, easy, and understandable for all those interested in these universal mysteries to enjoy. May it offer an expanded perspective on the ultimate mystery, life itself.

Book excerpt: A new look at the first few seconds after the Big Bang—and how research into these moments continues to revolutionize our understanding of our universe Scientists in the past few decades have made crucial discoveries about how our cosmos evolved over the past 13.8 billion years. But there remains a critical gap in our knowledge: we still know very little about what happened in the first seconds after the Big Bang. At the Edge of Time focuses on what we have recently learned and are still striving to understand about this most essential and mysterious period of time at the beginning of cosmic history. Delving into the remarkable science of cosmology, Dan Hooper describes many of the extraordinary and perplexing questions that scientists are asking about the origin and nature of our world. Hooper examines how we are using the Large Hadron Collider and other experiments to re-create the conditions of the Big Bang and test promising theories for how and why our universe came to contain so much matter and so little antimatter. We may be poised to finally discover how dark matter was formed during our universe’s first moments, and, with new telescopes, we are also lifting the veil on the era of cosmic inflation, which led to the creation of our world as we know it. Wrestling with the mysteries surrounding the initial moments that followed the Big Bang, At the Edge of Time presents an accessible investigation of our universe and its origin.

Book excerpt: The purpose of these lectures is to consider the origin and nature of the Ancient Mysteries and Modern Masonry and to show the relation which they bear one to the other. Freemasonry deals largely with the morals and symbols of the Mysteries of Antiquity, and originally was one of the channels of Ancient Wisdom. There were a few among the founders of Modern Masonry who possessed the Royal Secret, or, at least, had a knowledge of its existence, and, if the key has been lost, the Mason, as Heir-apparent of the Old Wisdom, should be foremost in the search for its recovery. All agree that the Masonic symbols and traditions are of the greatest antiquity, and can be traced to the far East--to the earliest civilization, from which time and place they have spoken in nature's language to all peoples of the earth. We are more and more convinced that this picture language of our ritual contains a most complete philosophy--a knowledge embracing the eternal verities of the universe, and that these symbols were designed by the Initiates of old to preserve and convey that Ancient Wisdom to the present and future generations. Though empires and dynastic continents have appeared and passed away, these ancient symbols, hewn in rock-cut temples and monuments, have served to convey the Great Secret from ages past and will continue its record as long as this part of the universe remains.

Book excerpt: This visionary and engaging book provides a mathematical perspective on the fundamental ideas of numbers, space, life, evolution, the brain and the mind. The author suggests how a development of mathematical concepts in the spirit of category theory may lead to unravelling the mystery of the human mind and the design of universal learning algorithms. The book is divided into two parts, the first of which describes the ideas of great mathematicians and scientists, those who saw sparks of light in the dark sea of unknown. The second part, Memorandum Ergo, reflects on how mathematics can contribute to the understanding of the mystery of thought. It argues that the core of the human mind is a structurally elaborated object that needs a creation of a broad mathematical context for its understanding. Readers will discover the main properties of the expected mathematical objects within this context, called ERGO-SYSTEMS, and readers will see how these “systems” may serve as prototypes for design of universal learning computer programs. This is a work of great, poetical insight and is richly illustrated. It is a highly attractive read for all those who welcome a mathematical and scientific way of thinking about the world.

Book excerpt: THE UNIVERSAL ONE was originally published in 1927 and distributed to the top scientists in the country. It is being republished at this crucial period for the sole purpose of again releasing vital new scientific knowledge to this new age- of new comprehension. Today the whole world is in a state of chaos fighting against the forces of greed, envy, jealousy and fear. Disharmony is rife. All of our human relations are in a state of violent upheaval. Civilization is in reverse. Science is being used to destroy instead of to build. We talk of world peace, yet those who are to plan the new world do not know the answer, the solution. Present knowledge of man's relation to Nature and Natural Law which controls his human relations is, as yet, inadequate to meet the situation. Man is still too near his jungle to either know the law which inexorably governs his every action and that of everything in Nature or to comprehend that he must obey Nature or be self-destroyed. Still dominated by jungle habits, he settles his human relations by jungle methods. Wars and world chaos will continue until new knowledge applicable to the coming new cycle in man's evolution is acquired by him. What is this new knowledge? A consistent cosmogony is sorely needed for this newly dawning day of man's exaltation which is to come. Walter Russell spent a full seven years in writing this book. When it was first published in 1927, it won more condemnation than favor from a world which was not then as ready for it as now. The book mixed science and metaphysics in a manner which nullified its impression upon physicists. Gradually, however, many of its then radical statements have been verified by some of the world's greatest scientists and have won him many followers. The physicist draws a sharp line between things which he can in some way detect by the evidence of his senses and things which lie beyond that evidence. There is no denial of a "something" beyond the range of his senses and his sensed instruments, but what may be there is conjectural and, therefore, inadmissible as scientific data of a reliable nature. In other words, material evidence which lies within the narrow limits of man's sense-range is the only admissible evidence to science. But what about that vast range which will not respond to our sensed bodies and sensed instruments? Down the ages a rare few have been permitted to sever the senses which connect matter with its motivated Source in the consciousness of Universal Mind. These few have become conscious of the cosmos and have tried to tell the world of its simplicity. Each of these has faced an impossible task. The generalities and symbols which they did set down have been discounted and relegated to poetry or metaphysics or mysticism.
