Book excerpt: This yearbook is a project of the Consortium for Educational Development, Evaluation and Research (CEDER), the research and development arm of the College of Education and Human Development at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. With this edition of the CEDER Yearbook, the editors wished to support student researchers as emerging scholars. Participating in research projects entails many benefits for students, including the onboarding of new teaching methods and strategies, becoming a reflective practitioner, engaging in a different model of professional learning, learning how to behave like a researcher, improving writing skills, and pursuing further degrees. Collaboration between faculty members and students (often teacher or pre-service teacher researchers) is critical (Brew, 2013; Johnson, 2000; Ries, 2018).Strickland (1988) posits that teacher researchers need to be engaged in every step of the research process and allowed to take ownership of the work. It should be thought of as helping to create lifelong researchers, for "if students are properly trained, prepared, and supervised, the student-faculty collaboration can be a memorable and successful experience. It may even inspire the career goal of a future professor or two" (Fenn, 2010, p. 259). The call for proposals asked for empirical, conceptual and theoretical contributions to the area of research conducted by students. Personal Perspectives and Research Focus of students include the following categories: Culture, International Students, Men of Color, Teaching, Doctoral Students, Latino/a Culture, STEM, LBGTQ, Policy and Administration, Student Faculty, and Curriculum. The intended audience for this yearbook includes educators, decision-makers, policymakers, and leaders within faculty and student development programs as well as international student departments. A call for proposals was issued to a variety of universities and professional organizations. Two hundred and sixty-four articles from a total of 217 authors representing 72 universities were submitted. Those blinded articles were distributed to a panel of reviewers. Each article was seen by two reviewers and the editors of the yearbook. The editorial team selected 21 articles for inclusion in this yearbook.

Polish resentment at alleged Jewish collaboration with the Soviets between 1939 and 1941 affected the development of Polish-Jewish relations under Nazi rule and in the USSR. The role of these conflicts both in the Anders army and in the Communist-led Kosciuszko division and 1st Polish Army is investigated, as well as the part played by Jews in the communist-dominated regime in Poland after 1944.

This book was released on 2009-04-14 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pushing ‘social’ responsibilities on schools is a process that has been underway for a long time. This phenomenon has been studied more in Europe than in North America and the U.K. and has been labelled Pädagogisierung. The editors have chosen to use ‘Educationalization’ to identify the overall orientation or trend toward thinking about education as the focal point for addressing or solving larger human problems. The term describes these phenomena as a sub-process of the ‘modernization’ of society, but it also has negative connotations, such as increased dependence, patronization, and pampering. In this book distinguished philosophers and historians of education focus on ‘educationalization’ to expand its meaning through an engagement with educational theory. Topics discussed are the family and the child, the ‘learning society’, citizenship education, widening participation in higher education, progressive education, and schooling movements such as No Child Left Behind. ‘Smeyers’ and Depaepe's book offers great insights into one of the most ambivalent phenomena of today's educational world and especially educational policy. The contributions assembled represent perspectives of some of the most respected scholars in the field. Their manifold critiques of the educationalization of social problems are rather convincing. Our time is definitely ripe for such analysis!’ Roland Reichenbach, Center for Educational Studies, University of Basel, Switzerland ‘This is a challenging, critical and analytical treatment of the tendency of contemporary administrations to overburden educational institutions with the expectation that they will provide the solutions to an increasingly diverse range of social and economic problems. It brings together the theoretical resources of a distinguished international group of philosophers and historians of education and deserves the careful attention of educational policy makers, practitioners and researchers alike.’ David Bridges, Von Hügel Institute, St Edmund’s College, Cambridge, England This publication is realized by the Research Community (FWO-Vlaanderen / Research Foundation Flanders, Belgium) Philosophy and History of the Discipline of Education: Evaluation and Evolution of the Criteria for Educational Research. Book excerpt: This book examines how common e-learning technologies open up compelling, if limited, experiential spaces for users, similar to the imaginary worlds opened up by works of fiction. However, these experiential worlds are markedly different from the «real» world of physical objects and embodied relations. This book shows these differences to be of central importance for teaching and learning.

And it's haunting Harry Potter's dreams. Why else would he be waking in the middle of the night, screaming in terror? It's not just the upcoming O.W.L. exams; a new teacher with a personality like poisoned honey; a venomous, disgruntled house-elf; or even the growing threat of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. Now Harry Potter is faced with the unreliability of the very government of the magical world and the impotence of the authorities at Hogwarts. Despite this (or perhaps because of it), he finds depth and strength in his friends, beyond what even he knew; boundless loyalty; and unbearable sacrifice.

Book excerpt: What's it really like to learn online?Learning Online: The Student Experience Online learning is ubiquitous for millions of students worldwide, yet our understanding of student experiences in online learning settings is limited. The geographic distance that separates faculty from students in an online environment is its signature feature, but it is also one that risks widening the gulf between teachers and learners. In Learning Online, George Veletsianos argues that in order to critique, understand, and improve online learning, we must examine it through the lens of student experience. Approaching the topic with stories that elicit empathy, compassion, and care, Veletsianos relays the diverse day-to-day experiences of online learners. Each in-depth chapter follows a single learner's experience while focusing on an important or noteworthy aspect of online learning, tackling everything from demographics, attrition, motivation, and loneliness to cheating, openness, flexibility, social media, and digital divides. Veletsianos also draws on these case studies to offer recommendations for the future and lessons learned. The elusive nature of online learners' experiences, the book reveals, is a problem because it prevents us from doing better: from designing more effective online courses, from making evidence-informed decisions about online education, and from coming to our work with the full sense of empathy that our students deserve. Writing in an evocative, accessible, and concise manner, Veletsianos concretely demonstrates why it is so important to pay closer attention to the stories of students—who may have instructive and insightful ideas about the future of education.

Book excerpt: In April 1943, German authorities claimed that they had found the bodies of more than 4,000 Polish prisoners of war buried near Katyn, in the Western Soviet Union. The Polish exile government in London agreed with the Germans. In January, 1944, Soviet authorities issued a report claiming that the Germans had murdered the Polish POWs. In 1990-92 Soviet, then Russian authorities agreed that the Soviets were indeed the guilty party. But by 2010 serious evidence had been discovered that cast doubt on Soviet guilt. There has never been an objective, thorough study of this mystery - until now. All mainstream accounts blame the USSR - Stalin - for the deaths, while all the evidence points in the opposite direction. Grover Furr has identified, obtained, and studied all the evidence, and has also studied all the supposedly "authoritative" scholarly accounts of Katyn, with skill and - what is most important - with objectivity. In this book he lays out the evidence and solves this mystery for once and for all.
