Book excerpt: This is the second volume of the two-volume set of the history of the United States Army's 34th Infantry Regiment, from March 1st, 1940, through September 2nd, 1945, with an emphasis on the 1st Battalion and 'B' Company. The second volume (710 pages, measuring 8.5 by 11 inches per page) contains the eight appendices of Volume I (758 pages, measuring 8.5 by 11 inches per page). The regiment was reactivated in Camp Jackson, South Carolina, transferred to the Territory of Hawaii, and transferred again to Queensland, Australia; then engaged in battles in Dutch New Guinea and the Philippine islands. During the five-year period, narratives describe how men were drafted, their basic training, their unit training, new stations, fighting, killing, being killed/wounded, and finally returning home. All of the narratives of the valor citations (Medal of Honor, Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star, Bronze Star with Valor) are woven into the day-by-day and minute-by-minute narratives. Sprinkled throughout the pages are other event narratives that directly or indirectly affected the regiment. In addition to all of the regimental narratives, the regiment's history before and after World War II can be found in the Prologue and Epilogue sections The first appendix contains over 580 pages of documentation: newspaper articles, photographic images, maps, book excerpt images, War Department documents, Naval Deck logs, Naval Armed Guard logs, Army General Orders, final payrolls, hospital admission cards, Veterans Administration cards, 24th Infantry Division G-2 Reports, 34th Infantry Regiment documents, 34th Infantry Regiment Morning Reports, 1st Battalion, 34th Infantry Regiment documents. Appendices two through eight contain the following: (2) United States Army Organization Units, (3) Army Table of Organization and Equipment, (4) 34th Infantry Regiment Commanders, (5) 34th Infantry Regiment Personal Citations, (6) 34th Infantry Regiment Casualties and Enemy Killed, (7) 34th Infantry Regiment Honor Roll of Wounded and Injured, (8) 34th Infantry Regiment Honor Roll of Dead and Missing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the history of the United States Army's 34th Infantry Regiment, from March 1st, 1940, through September 2nd, 1945. The regiment's history is described in a journalistic format, with an emphasis on the 1st Battalion and 'B' Company. Within the 758 pages in Volume I and 710 pages in Volume II (both measuring 8.5 by 11 inches per page), is a compilation of thousands of pages of company clerks' "record of events" narratives for the twenty companies of the regiment. Over five thousand hours were required to research the thousands of pages of company, battalion, and regimental records held in the National Archives in St. Louis, Missouri, and College Park, Maryland. These narratives are the day-by-day, and at times the minute-by-minute actions of the regiment, from initial training starting in July 1940 through Japan's surrender on September 2nd, 1945. In addition to these narratives, personal memoirs of those that served with the regiment are also used. The regiment was reactivated in Camp Jackson, South Carolina, transferred to the Territory of Hawaii, and transferred again to Queensland, Australia; then it engaged in battles in Dutch New Guinea and the Philippine islands. During the five-year period, narratives describe how men were drafted, their basic training, their unit training, new stations, fighting, killing, being killed/wounded, and finally returning home. All of the narratives of the valor citations (Medal of Honor, Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star, Bronze Star with Valor) are woven into the narratives. Sprinkled throughout the pages are other event narratives that directly or indirectly affected the regiment. In addition to all of the regimental narratives, the regiment's history before and after World War II can be found in the Prologue and Epilogue sections. Volume II of the two-volume set contains the eight appendices of Volume I. The first appendix contains over 580 pages of documentation: photographs, newspaper articles, maps, 34th Infantry Regiment documents, book excerpts, War Department documents, Naval deck logs, and 24th Infantry Division documents. Appendices two through eight contain the following: (2) United States Army Organization Units, (3) Army Table of Organization and Equipment, (4) 34th Infantry Regiment Commanders, (5) 34th Infantry Regiment Personal Citations, (6) 34th Infantry Regiment Casualties and Enemy Killed, (7) 34th Infantry Regiment Honor Roll of Wounded and Injured, (8) 34th Infantry Regiment Honor Roll of Dead and Missing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between November 1942 and May 1945, US Army infantry units fought in eight named campaigns in the Mediterranean Theater. This title follows one soldier from enlistment in 1942, through training in a Replacement Training Center, assignment to the 1st Battalion 133d Regiment, 34th Infantry Division (Red Bull), and into combat. Among the battles covered are Fondouk Pass, Hill 609, Salerno, Monte Cassino, Anzio and the fighting in the Po Valley. A key focus is on the Heavy Weapons Company, which consisted of two machine gun platoons and one mortar platoon. The training and combat roles of the machine gunner's Military Occupational Specialty are discussed in detail.

Book excerpt: This book looks at several troop categories based on primary function and analyzes the ratio between these categories to develop a general historical ratio. This ratio is called the Tooth-to-Tail Ratio. McGrath's study finds that this ratio, among types of deployed US forces, has steadily declined since World War II, just as the nature of warfare itself has changed. At the same time, the percentage of deployed forces devoted to logistics functions and to base and life support functions have increased, especially with the advent of the large-scale of use of civilian contractors. This work provides a unique analysis of the size and composition of military forces as found in historical patterns. Extensively illustrated with charts, diagrams, and tables. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In December 1944, just as World War II appeared to be winding down, Hitler shocked the world with a powerful German counteroffensive that cracked the center of the American front. The attack came through the Ardennes, the hilly and forested area in eastern Belgium and Luxembourg that the Allies had considered a “quiet” sector. Instead, for the second time in the war, the Germans used it as a stealthy avenue of approach for their panzers. Much of U.S. First Army was overrun, and thousands of prisoners were taken as the Germans forged a 50-mile “bulge” into the Allied front. But in one small town, Bastogne, American paratroopers, together with remnants of tank units, offered dogged resistance. Meanwhile the rest of Eisenhower’s “broad front” strategy came to a halt as Patton, from the south, and Hodges, from the north, converged on the enemy incursion. Yet it would take an epic, six-week-long winter battle, the bloodiest in the history of the U.S. Army, before the Germans were finally pushed back. Christer Bergström has interviewed veterans, gone through huge amounts of archive material, and performed on-the-spot research in the area. The result is a large amount of previously unpublished material and new findings, including reevaluations of tank and personnel casualties and the most accurate picture yet of what really transpired. The Ardennes Offensive has often been described from the American point of view; however, this balanced book devotes equal attention to the perspectives of both sides. With nearly 400 photos, numerous maps, and 32 superb color profiles of combat vehicles and aircraft, it provides perhaps the most comprehensive look at the battle yet published.

Chapters examine the events that led to the landings on the Gallipoli peninsula, provide a comprehensive report on the landings themselves, and analyze the events and decisions contributing to their failure. Appendices provide first-hand accounts of the landings from period news articles, military documents and personal correspondence.
