Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Union or Separation These facts have been overlooked far too much during the Home Rule contest. The English people are so great and strong that they have almost lost sight Oftheir own nationality, and are in danger of forgetting what is due to their own interests and to their own race. There are Of people inhabiting the United Kingdom, and Of these inhabit England. But a large proportion of the Lowland Scotch are also Saxon, that is English in blood, and many of the people of Ulster are English in blood and history. The English people of the United Kingdom number at least and probably near This question Of Home Rule has been too much treated as an Irish issue. It is not a purely Irish issue; it is a National and an Imperial Question. Whether it be just or unjust to grant a separate Parliament to Ireland, the interests of Great Britain and of the world-wide Empire of which the United Kingdom is the centre and the heart, must be first considered. The Unionist party believe - and all the lessons of history and experience, past and present, support their belief - that union means strength, and that separate Parliaments and Separate administrations mean, first discord and weakness, and then ultimate disruption and decay. Giles's Lectures There can, I suppose, be no doubt whatever that, at the Restoration of the Monarchy and Episcopacy in 1660-1, a very large proportion of the clergy who had not received Episcopal ordination were allowed to remain in their parochial charges upon no other condition than that of acknowledging the office and authority of the Bishop of the Diocese. Dr. Grub writes None of the Bishops, except Bishop Mitchell [of Aberdeen, who died early in insisted on te-ordaining ministers who had received only Presbyterian ordina tion, though they did not refuse to do so when asked, vol. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Disunionist: A Brief Treatise Upon the Evils of the Union Between the North and the South, and the Propriety of Separation and the Formation of a Southern United States It would be almost impossible to write an article upon political subjects in this country without stating some facts and arguments that have been stated before. Hence it is not pretended that all the thoughts contained in this treatise are original or new. A large and extended work upon the subject of disunion would not be read by the mass of people, for the reason that the cost of publishing it would raise the price so high that many would not buy it; while others, for want of time and indifference to the subject, would be deterred by the size of the book from reading it. Some of the learned in political lore might have been gratified to see some of the chapters of this extended to the size of the whole book; but such persons need not books to aid them in forming conclusions. It was the object in writing this to condense facts, and arguments founded thereon, and bring them down to a compass that all might read, understand, and remember. To inform the judgment of the people is the only mode sought in this of producing action. The subject requires dispassionate investigation in order to arrive at truth. While the author professes no love for the people of the non-slave-holding States, it would be as unjust to attribute his motives to hatred toward them as to personal disappointment on his own part. I love the South, her people, and institutions; and feel that she has been deeply wronged; that her condition in the Union is that of deplorable dependence and subordination, and that there is no just grounds for us to hope for relief from abject slavery as a people, except in Southern independence. The people may investigate the facts and come to a different conclusion, but in doing so they will certainly see enough to induce them to pardon what they may think is the error into which I have fallen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Separation In spite of his Christian charity, his philosophy, and his Emersonian toleration, the Rev. Howard Carey found it impossible to perform his duties towards the gentleman who was, theoretically, a welcome guest at the parsonage. Mrs. Carey drew on her sympathy, and thus succeeded in bearing with this new study in human nature. He occupied an easy-chair placed in front of the open wood-fire in her sitting-room; his hands rested on his knees, his eyes were closed, his features expressed weariness tinged with sadness. Personally, he was tall, slight and fair. "We have some very pleasant neighbors, Mr. Cortis, and there are several charming families connected with the church." Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Real Issue Union or Disunion Fellow-citizens: We are rapidly approaching the close of the most extraordinary session of Congress known to the history of our country, and the most important epoch in our country's destiny. I know that you have not been indifferent spectators of the scenes transpiring around us. I know that with that love of the Union which is among the most cherished sentiments of your hearts, you have heard with deep solicitude those wild cries of disunion, anarchy, and civil war which have been sweeping over your beautiful prairies and carry ing consternation to the remotest corners of the republic. F ellow-citizens, as your representative, I occupy the position of a sentinel for you here, and it is your right to have a faithful report from me, in regard to everything pertaining to your interests; and as far as my humble abilities will enable me to give such report, you shall have it. I hope to see you all soon, but the condition of my health will not permit me to be among you as soon as I could desire, and I am therefore called upon, by an imperative sense of duty, to address you now in this manner. On almost any other occasion, I would say something in regard to my own course as your representative, but when the destiny of a great nation is at stake, the conduct, or even the fate, of so humble an individual as myself is a matter of very small moment. I will therefore for the present leave my official acts to be interpreted and explained by the official records of the House of which I am a member. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Union Not a Compact: A Speech, by Daniel Webster, in the United States Senate, 16th February, 1833 Having thus used the terms ratify and confirm, even in regard to the Old Confederation, it would have been strange indeed if the people of the United States, after its formation, and when they came to establish the present Constitution, had spoken of the States, or the people Of the States, as acceding to this Constitution. Such language would have been ill-suited to the occasion. It would have implied an existing separation or disunion among the States, such as never has existed since 1774. No such language, there fore, was used. The language actually employed is, adopt, ratify, ordain, establish. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Union, the Constitution, and Slavery The struggle in which this nation is engaged has already reached that stage in its progress when words of counsel may be offered, when principles may be discussed, when, if any man can throw light upon the questions at issue, or say or do aught to assuage the bitterness of feeling, and become the in strument of Peace, he is bound not to keep silent. For almost three years, the fierce passions, the mighty energies, the vast resources of the entire country, North and South, have been called into full play at what terrible cost, it is too soon yet to estimate. We do not suppose that the War 1s yet at an end; but we do believe that Reason is beginning to resume her throne. Men are beginning to ask, when is this awful sac rifice of the young best life of the country to cease What are the ends, for which the War is to be protracted P What are the difficulties, in the way of securing those ends In re Sponding to these inquiries, in the present Article, we shall write with entire frankness and while we utter only our own individual convictions, we shall do it in complete independence of all political parties, and, as far as may be, of all sectional prejudices. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Slavery and the War The question'of the abolition of slavery is becoming with us a prac tical question in a sense it has never before been. The Rebellion of the Slave States, which has for its object, not so much the dissolution of the Union, or the separation of the South from the North, as the reconstruction of the Union on the basis of slavery, or, as the Vice President of the Confederate States has it, with slavery as its corner stone, and therefore the extension of slavery over the whole country, cannot fail to force this question upon the grave attention of every citizen of the loyal States, who loves his country, and believes in the practicability of freedom. The Slave States, by their rebellion and war on the Union, are compelling us to regard this question as one which must soon be practically met, and are forcing all loyal citizens to make their election between the preservation of the Union and the preservation of slavery. This, whatever the Federal administration, whatever individuals or parties in the Free States, with, or without Southern or pro-slavery proclivities, may wish or desire, is pretty soon to be the inevitable issue of the terrible struggle in which our glorious, and hitherto peaceful Republic is now engaged. Perhaps, at the moment we write, the last of August, a majority of the people of the Free States may not only shrink from this issue, but even honestly be lieve it possible to avert it altogether. The bare suggestion of the abolition of slavery may shock, perhaps, enrage them; but events march, and men who mean to be successful, or not to be left behind, must march with them. Another disaster, like that of Bull Run, or another unsuccessful action, like that of, Wilson's Creek, where the brave and noble-hearted Lyon fell, a martyr to the cause of his country, and a victim to the failure of his government to send him timely aid, will do much to change the feelings and convictions of the loyal citizens of the Free States, and, perhaps, force them to give up the last h0pe or thought of preserving both the Union and the institution of slavery. It requires, however chary our public men may be even of Whispering it, no extraordinary sagacity or foresight to perceive that, if the present war is to be continued, and the integrity of the nation restored and maintained, the war can hardly fail to become a war of liberation, or that the Northern blood and treasure, which it demands for its success ful prosecution, will demand in return, as their indemnification, the emancipation of the slave, and the universal adoption for the South as well as the North of our Free Labor System.
