Book excerpt: Today AIDS dominates the headlines. A century ago it was fears of syphilis epidemics. This book looks at how the spread of syphilis was linked to socio-economic transformation land dispossession, migrancy and urbanisation disrupted social networks - factors similarly important in the AIDS crisis. Medical explanations of syphilis and state medical policy, however, were shaped by contemporary beliefs about race. Doctors drew on ideas from social Darwinism, eugenics, and social anthropology to explain the incidence of syphilis among poor whites and Africans, especially women, and to help define 'normal' and abnormal sexual behaviour for racial groups.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "After reading this book, no one should fail to see tuberculosis in South Africa in the light of social policies and interests which have prevented its control. In turn, it shows tuberculosis to be one measure of the cost in suffering of the emergence of a modern capitalist society in South Africa."—Rodney Ehrlich, Mount Sinai Medical Center, New York "At almost every point, the author has something fresh to say about previous analyses of the origins, nature and spread of the disease. His subtle exposition of the ideological interpretations of the medical profession—from their adherence to a 'virgin soil' theory to more recent notions of relating to the social and biological aetiology of the disease—is particularly original and thought-provoking. . . . Well researched, effectively organised, and wholly readable."—Shula Marks, Institute of Commonwealth Studies, University of London
Book Synopsis The Rhetorical Origins of Apartheid by : Mia Roth
Download or read book The Rhetorical Origins of Apartheid written by Mia Roth and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-08-19 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Nelson Mandela's and the African National Congress' triumph over apartheid in South Africa is well known. All but forgotten are the African leaders who spoke against the system of white rule in its infancy. The founders of the ANC were members of the Natives Representative Council, a legislative adjunct of the South African Parliament elected by Africans between 1937 and 1950, when the Council was abolished. Their speeches during Council sessions document their eloquence and quiet dignity when facing their oppressors. Abbreviated versions of the speeches of the NRC are published here for the first time, along with discussion of the Council's elections, its members and the white government who used the NRC's rhetoric to its own ends.

Download or read book The Politics of Official Discourse in Twentieth-century South Africa written by Adam Ashforth and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1990 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study uses a close reading of a series of major commission reports into the "Native Question" to examine the formation and reproduction of state power in South Africa. Analyzing the framework governing authoritative ways of speaking of, for, and to Blacks (once called "Natives"), Ashforth demonstrates how officially-approved forms of knowledge of "Native Life" substitute for political representation by Africans and continually serve to justify repression. He examines the terms used by those who, acting in the name of the state, strive to represent apartheid as necessary, practical, and just. Tracing the history of official discourse on the political status of African labor, the work illuminates the central contradictions in the politics of this repressive and exploitative regime.
