Book Synopsis Computational Approach to Riemann Surfaces by : Alexander I. Bobenko TU Berlin
Download or read book Computational Approach to Riemann Surfaces written by Alexander I. Bobenko TU Berlin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-02-03 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a well-structured overview of existent computational approaches to Riemann surfaces and those currently in development. The authors of the contributions represent the groups providing publically available numerical codes in this field. Thus this volume illustrates which software tools are available and how they can be used in practice. In addition examples for solutions to partial differential equations and in surface theory are presented. The intended audience of this book is twofold. It can be used as a textbook for a graduate course in numerics of Riemann surfaces, in which case the standard undergraduate background, i.e., calculus and linear algebra, is required. In particular, no knowledge of the theory of Riemann surfaces is expected; the necessary background in this theory is contained in the Introduction chapter. At the same time, this book is also intended for specialists in geometry and mathematical physics applying the theory of Riemann surfaces in their research. It is the first book on numerics of Riemann surfaces that reflects the progress made in this field during the last decade, and it contains original results. There are a growing number of applications that involve the evaluation of concrete characteristics of models analytically described in terms of Riemann surfaces. Many problem settings and computations in this volume are motivated by such concrete applications in geometry and mathematical physics.

This book was released on 2010-10-06 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph deals with symmetries of compact Riemann surfaces. A symmetry of a compact Riemann surface S is an antianalytic involution of S. It is well known that Riemann surfaces exhibiting symmetry correspond to algebraic curves which can be defined over the field of real numbers. In this monograph we consider three topics related to the topology of symmetries, namely the number of conjugacy classes of symmetries, the numbers of ovals of symmetries and the symmetry types of Riemann surfaces.

Book Synopsis Uniformization of Riemann Surfaces by : Henri Paul de Saint-Gervais

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1907 Paul Koebe and Henri Poincaré almost simultaneously proved the uniformization theorem: Every simply connected Riemann surface is isomorphic to the plane, the open unit disc, or the sphere. It took a whole century to get to the point of stating this theorem and providing a convincing proof of it, relying as it did on prior work of Gauss, Riemann, Schwarz, Klein, Poincaré, and Koebe, among others. The present book offers an overview of the maturation process of this theorem. The evolution of the uniformization theorem took place in parallel with the emergence of modern algebraic geometry, the creation of complex analysis, the first stirrings of functional analysis, and with the flowering of the theory of differential equations and the birth of topology. The uniformization theorem was thus one of the lightning rods of 19th century mathematics. Rather than describe the history of a single theorem, our aim is to return to the original proofs, to look at these through the eyes of modern mathematicians, to enquire as to their correctness, and to attempt to make them rigorous while respecting insofar as possible the state of mathematical knowledge at the time, or, if this should prove impossible, then using modern mathematical tools not available to their authors. This book will be useful to today's mathematicians wishing to cast a glance back at the history of their discipline. It should also provide graduate students with a non-standard approach to concepts of great importance for modern research.
Book Synopsis Discontinuous Groups and Riemann Surfaces (AM-79), Volume 79 by : Leon Greenberg

This book was released on 2016-03-02 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Study 79 contains a collection of papers presented at the Conference on Discontinuous Groups and Ricmann Surfaces at the University of Maryland, May 21-25, 1973. The papers, by leading authorities, deal mainly with Fuchsian and Kleinian groups, Teichmüller spaces, Jacobian varieties, and quasiconformal mappings. These topics are intertwined, representing a common meeting of algebra, geometry, and analysis.

Book Synopsis An Introduction to Riemann Surfaces by : Terrence Napier
Download or read book An Introduction to Riemann Surfaces written by Terrence Napier and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-09-08 with total page 563 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook presents a unified approach to compact and noncompact Riemann surfaces from the point of view of the so-called L2 $\bar{\delta}$-method. This method is a powerful technique from the theory of several complex variables, and provides for a unique approach to the fundamentally different characteristics of compact and noncompact Riemann surfaces. The inclusion of continuing exercises running throughout the book, which lead to generalizations of the main theorems, as well as the exercises included in each chapter make this text ideal for a one- or two-semester graduate course.
Book Synopsis Riemann Surfaces by : Hershel M. Farkas
Download or read book Riemann Surfaces written by Hershel M. Farkas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text covers Riemann surface theory from elementary aspects to the fontiers of current research. Open and closed surfaces are treated with emphasis on the compact case, while basic tools are developed to describe the analytic, geometric, and algebraic properties of Riemann surfaces and the associated Abelian varities. Topics covered include existence of meromorphic functions, the Riemann-Roch theorem, Abel's theorem, the Jacobi inversion problem, Noether's theorem, and the Riemann vanishing theorem. A complete treatment of the uniformization of Riemann sufaces via Fuchsian groups, including branched coverings, is presented, as are alternate proofs for the most important results, showing the diversity of approaches to the subject. Of interest not only to pure mathematicians, but also to physicists interested in string theory and related topics.
Book Synopsis Riemann Surfaces by : Lars Valerian Ahlfors
Download or read book Riemann Surfaces written by Lars Valerian Ahlfors and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of Riemann surfaces has a geometric and an analytic part. The former deals with the axiomatic definition of a Riemann surface, methods of construction, topological equivalence, and conformal mappings of one Riemann surface on another. The analytic part is concerned with the existence and properties of functions that have a special character connected with the conformal structure, for instance: subharmonic, harmonic, and analytic functions. Book Synopsis Functionals of Finite Riemann Surfaces by : Menahem Schiffer
Download or read book Functionals of Finite Riemann Surfaces written by Menahem Schiffer and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2014-06-01 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This advanced monograph on finite Riemann surfaces, based on the authors' 1949–50 lectures at Princeton University, remains a fundamental book for graduate students. The Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society hailed the self-contained treatment as the source of "a plethora of ideas, each interesting in its own right," noting that "the patient reader will be richly rewarded." Suitable for graduate-level courses, the text begins with three chapters that offer a development of the classical theory along historical lines, examining geometrical and physical considerations, existence theorems for finite Riemann surfaces, and relations between differentials. Subsequent chapters explore bilinear differentials, surfaces imbedded in a given surface, integral operators, and variations of surfaces and of their functionals. The book concludes with a look at applications of the variational method and remarks on generalization to higher dimensional Kahler manifolds.
