Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book bridges the gap between general plasma physics lectures and the real world problems in MHD stability. In order to support the understanding of concepts and their implication, it refers to real world problems such as toroidal mode coupling or nonlinear evolution in a conceptual and phenomenological approach. Detailed mathematical treatment will involve classical linear stability analysis and an outline of more recent concepts such as the ballooning formalism. The book is based on lectures that the author has given to Master and PhD students in Fusion Plasma Physics. Due its strong link to experimental results in MHD instabilities, the book is also of use to senior researchers in the field, i.e. experimental physicists and engineers in fusion reactor science. The volume is organized in three parts. It starts with an introduction to the MHD equations, a section on toroidal equilibrium (tokamak and stellarator), and on linear stability analysis. Starting from there, the ideal MHD stability of the tokamak configuration will be treated in the second part which is subdivided into current driven and pressure driven MHD. This includes many examples with reference to experimental results for important MHD instabilities such as kinks and their transformation to RWMs, infernal modes, peeling modes, ballooning modes and their relation to ELMs. Finally the coverage is completed by a chapter on resistive stability explaining reconnection and island formation. Again, examples from recent tokamak MHD such as sawteeth, CTMs, NTMs and their relation to disruptions are extensively discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discharges with negative central magnetic shear (NCS) hold the promise of enhanced fusion performance in advanced tokamaks. However, stability to long wavelength magnetohydrodynamic modes is needed to take advantage of the improved confinement found in NCS discharges. The stability limits seen in DIII-D experiments depend on the pressure and current density profiles and are in good agreement with stability calculations. Discharges with a strongly peaked pressure profile reach a disruptive limit at low beta, [beta][sub N]=[beta] (I/aB)[sup -1][le] 2.5 (% m T/MA), caused by an n= 1 ideal internal kink mode or a global resistive instability close to the ideal stability limit. Discharges with a broad pressure profile reach a soft beta limit at significantly higher beta, [beta][sub N]= 4 to 5, usually caused by instabilities with n> 1 and usually driven near the edge of the plasma. With broad pressure profiles, the experimental stability limit is independent of the magnitude of negative shear but improves with the internal inductance, corresponding to lower current density near the edge of the plasma. Understanding of the stability limits in NCS discharges has led to record DIII-D fusion performance in discharges with a broad pressure profile and low edge current density.

Book excerpt: Neutral beam heating has recently been installed on the START tight aspect ratio or 'spherical tokamak' (R/a greater than or equal to 1.2), using equipment loaned by Oak Ridge National Laboratory, USA. This has led to significant improvements in plasma performance - for example, an increased Murakami parameter, n(c)R/B. High central (similar to 48%) and volume averaged (similar to 8.5%) beta-values have been obtained. Calculations show that Troyon scaling still holds at low aspect ratio (with coefficients similar to 4 for ballooning modes, similar to 5 for link modes), indicating that the START device should reach still higher values of beta. It is found that the limiting edge-q rises for aspect ratios less than approximately 1.5, in agreement with theoretical calculations. Energy confinement at low aspect ratio is as good as, or better than, most H-mode scalings from conventional devices (up to twice ITER-93H) - with NBI there is no evidence so far for a power degradation (although P-NBI less than or equal to 1.5P(OH)). In both Ohmic and NBI plasmas, the scrape-off layer (SOL) in double null geometry is narrow, providing a valuable test of SOL models. As reported previously, START is resilient against current-terminating disruptions. It does, however, have more benign internal reconnection events when approaching density and current limits which show the initial features of a disruption (e.g, transient I-p rise and beta(p) fall). A model based on helicity conservation shows that, at tight aspect ratio, smaller falls (and sometimes rises) in edge-q result from falls in beta(p) and I-i, suggesting a possible explanation for the resilience to disruptions of START.

Book excerpt: Limitations on high-.beta. tokamaks are imposed by a number of ideal and resistive MHD instabilities. The present paper reports results on three such studies: (1) Numerical analysis using the Princeton PEST code on .beta. optimization of tokamaks for low toroidal mode numbers n; (2) analytic and numerical results on ideal ballooning modes with high n; and (3) analytic and numerical results on resistive ballooning modes at high n.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pressure profile and plasma shape, parameterized by elongation ([kappa]), triangularity ([delta]), and squareness ([zeta]), strongly influence stability. In this study, ideal stability of single null and symmetric, double-null, advanced tokamak (AT) configurations is examined. All the various shapes are bounded by a common envelope and can be realized in the DIII-D tokamak. The calculated AT equilibria are characterized by P0/{l_angle}P] ≈ 2.0-4.5, weak negative central shear, high q{sub min} (>2.0), high bootstrap fraction, an H-mode pedestal, and varying shape parameters. The pressure profile is modeled by various polynomials together with a hyperbolic tangent pedestal, consistent with experimental observations. Stability is calculated with the DCON code and the resulting stability boundary is corroborated by GATO runs.
