Book excerpt: Perspectives on Election presents in counterpoint form five basic common beliefs on the doctrine of spiritual election (for example, predestination) that have developed over the course of church history with a view toward determining which is most faithful to Scripture. Each chapter is written by a prominent person within each tradition, and each writer has the opportunity to respond to each differing view. Despite the focus upon a topic that divides many people, editor Chad Brand says, “The goal of this book is to add clarity to the discussion and to further the discussion, insofar as it is possible, in an amiable manner.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The biblical doctrines of election and predestination generate much passion and emotional intensity among Christians. Most theologians have determined that these are doctrines filled with mystery, tension, and paradox which will never be resolved. Author John E. Chipman disagrees. He provides a fresh, biblical viewpoint regarding the perplexing doctrine of election that has the potential to kindle a re-thinking of the way Christians view and talk about God's purpose of election in the New Testament. In God's Elect, Chipman presents a truth that is neither Calvinistic nor Arminian―a truth that is simply, well, biblical. This book makes no claim to be deeply philosophical or scholarly. The arguments are intentionally simple, yet profoundly biblical. If you feel like you are caught in an ever-darkening doctrinal bog of election and predestination, and sense that you have lost God somewhere along the way, then you will want to read God's Elect. In its pages, you will find a path that leads back to the sunlight, back to solid ground, and back to the true God of the Bible.

How can I know if I am one of God's elect? Believers are filled with questions like these because God has placed the sense of eternity in the heart of every human being. We all think about our place in eternity, which leads us to contemplate the mysteries of election and predestination. If you've ever wondered if you are part of God's elect, then this book will be very meaningful to you. Drawing from a lifetime of research and Scripture study, the author invites you on a journey of discovery of the spiritual lostness of mankind, where God's redemptive grace answers every question and what-if. In this book you will read about - the background of election and predestination throughout church history, - the many supporters and preachers of the doctrine throughout the ages, and - the personal examples and illustrations from ongoing spiritual struggles in people's lives. Students of the Word will recognize that God's primary mercy and compassion in the gift of redemption and salvation is displayed in individuals through the majesty of election and predestination in every generation.

Are only the few elect? Rather than typically beginning with the preconceptions of systematic theologies, Dr. William Klein takes up this question by searching for a biblical theology of election. He surveys the OT contexts of God's choosing individuals--prophets, priests, kings--to serve divine purposes, and considers God's election of the nation of Israel as his special people. This OT study proposes that God's election is both individual and corporate, but not always determinative. Individuals entered the people of God by birth, but not all the people found salvation. Faith in Yahweh was required. This book traces these elective understandings through the intertestamental literature, identifying continuities and shifts. The bulk of the study, and the heart of the argument, focus on the New Testament. Klein identifies concepts of election, and relationships between writers in the gospels, the Lucan material, Paul's writings, and the rest. The new covenant, God choosing the church in Christ, emphasizes election as corporate, while the individual election of Jesus' disciples and of Paul raises the question whether such chosenness is necessarily salvific. In closing, Klein discusses the most engaging and divisive questions around God's election, and offers a real challenge to today's church.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Known unto God are all His works from the beginning of the world (cf. Acts 15:18). The future is what God has already planned according to His own counsel and purpose. Long before God made the world, he chose certain groups and individuals for Himself - to have a special relationship to Him. For example, Abraham, the nation of Israel, the house of David, and the prophet Jeremiah were all chosen beforehand by God according to His eternal purpose. According to the Bible, Jesus Christ was elected and appointed of God as the last Adam and the man through whom He would save humanity and reconcile all things to Himself, even before the world was made. Also, by His foreknowledge, members of the church, which is the body of Christ were elected or chosen by God for Himself, for a special task, and destined to be glorified before the world began. Even though, God has not made known what was in His foreknowledge that determined His elections in His Son Jesus, the Bible is clear that God's election is not partial, random selection, and neither is it upon any merits or holiness in the elected, but upon His own sovereign will and grace. Further, the loving-kindness of God forbids that God would elect and predestine certain groups or individuals to eternal damnation.

Book excerpt: Should we tell children that Jesus might have died for their sins… or that He did die for their sins? Is the biblical salvation all of grace… or all of irresistible grace? Such questions over the biblical doctrines of salvation have intrigued and confounded the minds of Christians for centuries. Engaging and methodical, Chosen or Not? exposes the most practical implications of this debate from a layman’s perspective, making it accessible for the average Christian. Doug Sayers explains the most essential terms and aspects of the debate, including predestination, reprobation, original sin, propitiation, saving faith, and assurance. Sayers shows how the Calvinistic doctrines of unconditional election and irresistible grace confuse and undermine the simple gospel of repentance and faith in Christ. He clearly exposes the fingerprints of religious man on the Reformed doctrine of reprobation, and affirms that God truly desires the salvation of every single person. “This book is a great help to any believer in Christ that is seeking to rightly divide the Word of God. It has been a very helpful reference when questions over election have come up in my life.” – J. Beller
