Book Synopsis Assemblee Nationale, Bundestag and the European Union by : Anja Thomas
Download or read book Assemblee Nationale, Bundestag and the European Union written by Anja Thomas and published by . This book was released on 2019-10 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing importance of national parliaments is one feature of the stronger differentiation within the EU. Habermasian expectations of an increasing consensus on political norms seem to be invalidated by current events. In her book, in which she draws on her award-winning PhD thesis, Anja Thomas makes an important theoretical and empirical contribution to our understanding of the social causes of this development. Analysing EU affairs in the Assemblee nationale and Bundestag since 1979, she uncovers a paradox: increasing experience with the EU leads to national institutions growing in importance for MPs discourse on the role of parliaments in the EU. Revisiting social theory, in particular Max Webers old institutionalism, the author presents a new model that explains this phenomenon. This book should be read by students of both parliaments in the EU and European integration processes.

Book Synopsis Party Competition between Unequals by : Bonnie M. Meguid
Download or read book Party Competition between Unequals written by Bonnie M. Meguid and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-01-11 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do some political parties flourish, while others flounder? In this book, Meguid examines variation in the electoral trajectories of the new set of single-issue parties: green, radical right, and ethnoterritorial parties. Instead of being dictated by electoral institutions or the socioeconomic climate, as the dominant theories contend, the fortunes of these niche parties, she argues, are shaped by the strategic responses of mainstream parties. She advances a new theory of party competition in which mainstream parties facing unequal competitors have access to a wider and more effective set of strategies than posited by standard spatial models. Combining statistical analyzes with in-depth case studies from Western Europe, the book explores how and why established parties undermine niche parties or turn them into weapons against their mainstream party opponents. This study of competition between unequals thus provides broader insights into the nature and outcome of competition between political equals.

Book Synopsis Mastering Globalization by : Stéphane Paquin
Download or read book Mastering Globalization written by Stéphane Paquin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-10-05 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary globalization is transforming and undermining the role of the nation-state, causing it to lose its grip on both the national economy and identity. This is a penetrating analysisof this phenomenon and an explorationn of how governments - national, regional, local, global city-regions - can respond. This original selection of essays discusses the impact of globalization on nation-states and the international system, the consequent political and sociological fragmentation of nations, and the rise of multiple identities within those nations. These essays uniquely investigate the dramatic effect of globalization on governance, outlining how sub-state 'governments' have now become international actors. This volume delivers a key insight into the way globalization is reshaping political relationships, and will be of interest to students of politics, international studies and globalization.
Book Synopsis Federal Democracies by : Michael Burgess
Download or read book Federal Democracies written by Michael Burgess and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-02-25 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Federal Democracies examines the evolution of the relationship between federalism and democracy. Taking the late 18th century US Federal Experience as its starting-point, the book uses the contributions of Calhoun, Bryce and Proudhon as 19th century conceptual prisms through which we can witness the challenges and changes made to the meaning of this relationship. The book then goes on to provide a series of case studies to examine contemporary examples of federalism and includes chapters on Canada, USA, Russia, Germany, Spain, Belgium, Switzerland and the emerging European Union. It features two further case studies on Minority Nations and a Federal Europe, and concludes with two chapters providing comparative empirical and theoretical perspectives, and comparative reflections on federalism and democracy. Bringing together international experts in the field this book will be vital reading for students and scholars of federalism, comparative politics and government.

Book Synopsis Policies and Practices for Mental Health in Europe by :
Download or read book Policies and Practices for Mental Health in Europe written by and published by WHO Regional Office Europe. This book was released on 2008 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This WHO report co-funded by the European Commission gives an overview of policies and practices for mental health in 42 Member States of the European Region. A large majority of countries have made significant progress over the past few years, and several are world leaders in mental health promotion, mental disorder prevention activities, service reform and human rights. Nevertheless, this report also identifies weaknesses in Europe, some systematic, such as a lack of consensus on definitions, and of compatible data collection, and others such as the need for development and investment across several areas. It identifies gaps in information where further work must be done, and is a baseline against which progress can be measured towards the vision and the milestones of the Mental Health Declaration for Europe. The data were obtained from the ministries of health of 42 European Member States. Over 150 figures and tables in the report demonstrate the diversity across the European Region, and allow country to country comparisons of indicators such as numbers of psychiatrists, financing, community services, training of the workforce, the prescription of anti-depressants and representation of users and carers.
