Book Synopsis Renal Fibrosis: Mechanisms and Therapies by : Bi-Cheng Liu
Download or read book Renal Fibrosis: Mechanisms and Therapies written by Bi-Cheng Liu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-08-09 with total page 707 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book systemically presents the latest research on renal fibrosis, covering all the major topics in the field, including the possible mechanisms, biomarkers, and strategies for prevention and treatment of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Due to its high prevalence, CKD represents a huge global economic and social burden. Irrespective of the initial causes, CKD progresses to end stage kidney disease (ESKD) due to renal fibrosis, which is characterized by glomerulosclerosis, tubule atrophy and atresia, and the excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix (ECM) in the kidney. Unfortunately, an estimated 1%-2% of the adult population living with CKD will need renal replacement therapy at some point as a result of ESKD. As such, strategies for preventing or slowing CKD progression to ESKD are of utmost importance, and studies aiming to understand the mechanisms of renal fibrosis have been the focus of intensive research. Recently, novel insights into the pathophysiological processes have furthered our understanding of the pathogenesis of renal fibrosis, and more importantly, promoted studies on the early diagnosis and treatment of CKD. This book draws lessons from the extensive, state-of-the-art research in this field, elaborating the new theories and new techniques to offer readers a detailed and comprehensive understanding of renal fibrosis and as well as inspiration for future research directions.

Book Synopsis Pharmacology of Itch by : Alan Cowan
Download or read book Pharmacology of Itch written by Alan Cowan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-04-10 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Basic research on the pharmacology of itch has exploded in the wake of two very influential papers that were published in Nature (2007) and Science (2009). Long overlooked as a milder form of pain, itching has rapidly gained a new appreciation in both research and clinical communities because of its complexity and its negative effects on the quality of life of the distressed patients. Like pain, not all itches are the same. Unlike pain, there are no standard drugs equivalent to aspirin and morphine. Epidemiological studies emphasize the high incidence and economic costs of itch (pruritus). It is the most prevalent symptom of a wide variety of allergic and inflammatory skin conditions (e.g., psoriasis, atopic dermatitis), is associated with several systemic diseases (e.g., chronic kidney and liver disease), and occurs in patients undergoing hemodialysis, spinal administration of opioids, and in those suffering from AIDS. The reader will learn about the multiple pathways for itch and their interactions with pain. The relationship between these closely related, yet distinct sensory phenomena, will be emphasized. Both itch and pain use several common molecules to send signals to the brain. Thus, drugs that have been, and are being, developed as analgesics may also attenuate intractable itch. This has been an exciting and very necessary turn of events since traditional H-1 receptor antagonists are ineffective in blocking the pruritus associated with kidney failure and cholestasis. The clinical chapters will provide insights into contemporary treatment regimens for pruritus in different human scenarios.
Book Synopsis Transgender Medicine by : Leonid Poretsky
Download or read book Transgender Medicine written by Leonid Poretsky and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-22 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although transgender persons have been present in various societies throughout human history, it is only during the last several years that they have become widely acknowledged in our society and their right to quality medical care has been established. In the United States, endocrinologists have been providing hormonal therapy for transgender individuals for decades; however, until recently, there has been only limited literature on this subject, and non-endocrine aspects of medical care for transgender individual have not been well addressed in the endocrine literature. The goal of this volume is not only to address the latest in hormonal therapy for transgender individuals (including pediatric and geriatric age groups), but also to familiarize the reader with other aspects of transgender care, including primary and surgical care, fertility preservation, and the management of HIV infection. In addition to medical issues, psychological, social, ethical and legal issues pertinent to transgender individuals add to the complexities of successful treatment of these patients. A final chapter includes extensive additional resources for both transgender patients and providers. Thus, an endocrinologist providing care to a transgender person will be able to use this single resource to address most of the patient’s needs. While Transgender Medicine is intended primarily for endocrinologists, this book will be also useful to primary care physicians, surgeons providing gender-confirming procedures, mental health professionals participating in the care of transgender persons, and medical residents and students.
Book Synopsis The Neutral Theory of Molecular Evolution by : Motoo Kimura
Download or read book The Neutral Theory of Molecular Evolution written by Motoo Kimura and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1985-01-10 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Motoo Kimura, as founder of the neutral theory, is uniquely placed to write this book. He first proposed the theory in 1968 to explain the unexpectedly high rate of evolutionary change and very large amount of intraspecific variability at the molecular level that had been uncovered by new techniques in molecular biology. The theory - which asserts that the great majority of evolutionary changes at the molecular level are caused not by Darwinian selection but by random drift of selectively neutral mutants - has caused controversy ever since. This book is the first comprehensive treatment of this subject and the author synthesises a wealth of material - ranging from a historical perspective, through recent molecular discoveries, to sophisticated mathematical arguments - all presented in a most lucid manner.
Book Synopsis On-Line Hemodiafiltration: The Journey and the Vision by : G. Krick

This book was released on 2011-12-20 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On-line HDF represents a major technical development in the delivery of hemodialysis therapy: It combines the properties of increased diffusion available in current high-flux membranes with convective removal of between 6 and 30 liters per treatment and requires the use of ultrapure water and online filtration of replacement fluid. On-line HDF has been successfully introduced in Europe and Asia and is routinely prescribed for dialysis patients in these regions. The book at hand summarizes the history and achievements of on-line HDF in four parts: A report of the technological development in both machine and fiber/dialyzer is followed by a description of the challenges encountered in the evolution of on-line HDF, collecting the accounts of clinical key opinion leaders who had been involved in its early application. The third part presents a comprehensive review of the clinical results achieved with on-line HDF from its inception to the present times, in which it represents the clinical golden standard. The fourth and final part is dedicated to on-line HDF as a ‘vision’ for the future.

Book excerpt: This publication is a collection of the papers presented at the 'First International Course on Hemodialysis Technology', Vicenza, June 2002: It covers a wide range of topics, including aspects of vascular access and new forms of monitoring access function. Moreover, anticoagulation strategies and antimicrobial treatment are debated, with special emphasis on temporary catheters and prosthetic devices.Membrane composition and structure, their methods of sterilization and performance are discussed by experts and manufacturers, bringing together in a unique way science, theory and manufacturing procedures. The same synthesis is achieved with respect to hemodialyzers, adsorbent devices, dialysis techniques and machines. A new issue is the possibility of computer-assisted data collection and management: This subject is discussed by experts in electronic data management, together with managers of large dialysis networks, concentrating on matters of quality assurance and continuous quality improvement programs.Special attention is given to dialysate and water purity since this is the starting point for newer dialytic techniques such as online hemodiafiltration. Moreover, the results obtained from the IDOPPS study are incorporated into the discussion of different practice patterns and anemia management. Finally, future trends are explored including automatic sensors and biofeedback monitors.Covering various aspects of hemodialysis technology, this book will be a helpful tool for physicians and nurses, both for education and information.

Book Synopsis Family Focused Grief Therapy by : David William Kissane
Download or read book Family Focused Grief Therapy written by David William Kissane and published by Open University Press. This book was released on 2002-04 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "To those of us who have been aware of the innovative service to families facing death and bereavement that has been developed by David W. Kissane and Sidney Bloch this book has been eagerly awaited. Their work is a logical development in the field of Palliative Care in which it has long been recognized that, when life is threatened, it is the family (which includes the patient) which is, or ought to be, the unit of care. The work also has great relevance for the wider field of bereavement care...all who work to help families at times of death and bereavement will find much to learn from this book which represents a useful addition to our understanding of the losses which, sooner or later, we all have to face." - Colin Murray Parkes Family members are often intimately involved in the care of dying people and themselves require support through both their experience of palliative care and bereavement. This innovative book describes a comprehensive model of family care and how to go about it - Family Focused Grief Therapy is an approach which is new, preventive, cost effective and with proven benefits to bereaved people. It describes a highly original and creative approach to bereavement care, one likely to revolutionize psychosocial care in oncology, hospice or palliative care and grief work. The book has been designed rather like a therapy manual, providing a step-by-step approach to assessment and intervention. Its rich illustration through many clinical examples brings the process of therapy alive for the reader, anticipating the common challenges that arise and describing how the therapist might respond. Families are recognised throughout as the central social unit, pivotal to the success of palliative care. Family Focused Grief Therapy will be of use to doctors, nurses, psychologists, social workers, pastoral care workers, psychiatrists and other allied health professionals who work in caring for the dying and for their bereaved relatives. Based soundly on a decade of internationally regarded research, this book will alter the direction of future medical practice and is destined to become a classic in its field.
