Book excerpt: LES TRAVAUX PRESENTES DANS CE MEMOIRE S'INSCRIVENT DANS LE CADRE DE LA CONCEPTION D'INTERFACES POUR OBJETS COMPLEXES. NOUS PROPOSONS UNE INTERFACE MULTIMODALE QUI A POUR VOCATION D'ETRE ACCESSIBLE A DES UTILISATEURS NON SPECIALISTES EN FACILITANT LA CONSULTATION D'OBJETS COMPLEXES ET DOCUMENTAIRES. DANS UN PREMIER TEMPS, NOUS AVONS DEFINI UN MODELE ORIENTE OBJET ADAPTE A LA MANIPULATION D'OBJETS COMPLEXES. IL CONSERVE LA RICHESSE STRUCTURELLE DES MODELES A OBJETS COMPLEXES, PERMET UNE MANIPULATION D'OBJETS VIA LEUR COMPORTEMENT, ET OFFRE UNE MANIPULATION ENSEMBLISTE DES CLASSES, GRACE A L'UTILISATION DE METHODES ALGEBRIQUES. LA DEUXIEME PARTIE DE NOTRE ETUDE EST CONSACREE A LA DEFINITION DE L'INTERFACE. NOUS PROPOSONS TOUT D'ABORD UN MODE D'INTERROGATION GRAPHIQUE QUI INTEGRE LES CONCEPTS DU MODELE ORIENTE OBJET ET UTILISE UNE APPROCHE HYPERTEXTE. CETTE INTERFACE S'APPUIE SUR DEUX PRINCIPES. LE SCHEMA DE LA BASE D'OBJETS EST REPRESENTE SOUS FORME DE GRAPHES REPRESENTANT LA SEMANTIQUE VEHICULEE A DIFFERENTS NIVEAUX D'ABSTRACTION. LA MANIPULATION DES OBJETS ET DES CLASSES EST REALISEE GRAPHIQUEMENT ET SE TRADUIT PAR L'ACTIVATION DE METHODES. EN COMPLEMENT DE CETTE INTERFACE GRAPHIQUE, NOUS PROPOSONS UN DEUXIEME MODE D'INTERROGATION FACILITANT L'ACCES AUX OBJETS DOCUMENTAIRES. A PARTIR D'UNE REQUETE EXPRIMEE EN LANGAGE PSEUDO-NATUREL, LE SYSTEME RESTITUE LES OBJETS DOCUMENTAIRES JUGES PERTINENTS, CLASSES DANS UN ORDRE DECROISSANT DE RESSEMBLANCE AVEC LA REQUETE. L'ORIGINALITE DE NOS TRAVAUX RESIDE DANS LE FAIT QUE LES DEUX MODES D'INTERROGATION QUE NOUS AVONS DECRITS PEUVENT ETRE EMPLOYES DE FACON COMPLEMENTAIRE POUR LA RECHERCHE D'OBJETS COMPLEXES ET DOCUMENTAIRES

It outlines how to teach, research and build communities in tertiary institutions through the particular form of audio-visual communication known as digital storytelling by developing relationships across professions, workplaces and civil society. The book is framed within the context of ‘The Four Scholarships’ developed by the Carnegie Foundation for the advancement and redefining of teaching, including the scholarships of discovery, integration, application, and teaching and learning. Across four sections, this volume considers the potential of digital storytelling to improve, enhance and expand teaching, learning, research, and interactions with society. Written by an international range of academics, researchers and practitioners, from disciplines spanning medicine, anthropology, education, social work, film and media studies, rhetoric and the humanities, the book demonstrates the variety of ways in which digital storytelling offers solutions to key challenges within higher education for students, academics and citizens. It will be compelling reading for students and researchers working in education and sociology.

Book excerpt: This volume brings together all the successful peer-reviewed papers submitted for the proceedings of the 43rd conference on Computer Applications and Quantitative Methods in Archaeology that took place in Siena (Italy) from March 31st to April 2nd 2015. Altogether, within the four days of the conference 280 papers were presented in 48 sections divided into ten macro topics, 113 posters, 7 roundtables and 12 workshops. That number, in itself, has prompted a thought or two. Above all it says that CAA is very much alive and kicking, that it is in robust good health, and that it remains a wholly relevant force in the scientific community, fully engaged with the questions of the day, and a continuing focal point for the profession. All of that speaks well for the motto of CAA 2015: KEEP THE REVOLUTION GOING. Although the significance of the motto is obvious, it is worth some thoughts. Few would deny that in the past 30 years or so, digital technologies have profoundly revolutionised archaeology - in the office and laboratory, in the field and in the classroom. The progressive introduction of digital techniques in the archaeological process has of course led to a general increase in efficiency. But perhaps more importantly it has provided a spur to the discussion of methodology and through that has strongly influenced not only the way we go about things but also the outcomes that we have been able to achieve. The pioneering phase in the application of digital techniques in archaeological research has clearly been fruitful and today computer applications such as GIS, databases, remote sensing and spatial analysis as well as virtual and cyber archaeology are deeply embedded within our universities. This is all good, of course, but we must not assume that the task has been completed. An intrinsic revolutionary instinct towards technological development has been awakened. But it will only survive by virtue of the results that it brings about. Or using the words of our Chairman Prof Gary Lock: 'Computers not only change the way we do things, but more importantly they change the way we think about what we do and why we do it'. The general thrust of this statement can be summed up and reinforced by recalling a quote from the philosopher Don Ihde, who has argued we should never forget that all technologies should be regarded as 'cultural instruments', which as well as strategies and methodologies implemented in our researches are also 'non-neutral'. So KEEP THE REVOLUTION GOING! is a motto that lays stress on the need to maintain innovation in archaeology through technological advances. But innovation must have at its root the fostering of critical thought and the framing of new archaeological questions. So there is much work still to be done, and fresh challenges to be faced in the months, years and decades ahead. -from the introduction by Stefano Campana and Roberto Scopigno

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classrooms are increasingly multicultural in their social composition, and students are increasingly connected, through digital media, to local and global networks. However, pedagogy has failed to take full advantage of the opportunities these resources represent. Multilingual Digital Storytelling draws attention to the interfaces between learner engagement, creativity and critical digital literacy, as well as addressing the multilingual within the multiliteracies framework. Addressing a significant gap in the field of multiliteracies by focusing on multilingualism, this book explores new digital spaces for language learning and methods of extending understandings of youth literacy in an increasingly interconnected world. Drawing on innovative and multi-site research projects based in mainstream and community schools in London and overseas, this book discusses how young people become engaged creatively and critically with literacy by demonstrating how digital storytelling can be used as a tool for language development. The book begins by considering linguistic, cultural, cognitive and social dimensions of language learning from a theoretical perspective, whilst the second part focuses on practical case studies that reflect and illustrate these theoretical principles. Offering a powerful new perspective on multiliteracies pedagogy, Multilingual Digital Storytelling will appeal to researchers and academics in the fields of education, applied linguistics, sociology and youth and community studies. It will also be an invaluable resource for teachers, teacher educators, curriculum planners and policymakers.

In this edited collection, the contributors provide conceptual foundations, practical guidelines and theoretical considerations central to the practice of narrative ethics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book in the field of workplace discourse to examine the relationships among leadership, ethnicity, and language use. Taking a social constructionist approach to the ways in which leadership is enacted through discourse, Leadership, Discourse, and Ethnicity problematizes the concept of ethnicity and demonstrates the importance of context-particularly the community of practice-in determining what counts as relevant in the analysis of ethnicity. The authors analyse everyday workplace interactions supplemented by interview data to examine the ways in which workplace leaders use language to achieve their transactional and relational goals in contrasting "ethnicized" contexts, two of which are Maori and two European/Pakeha. Their analysis pays special attention to the roles of ethnic values, beliefs and orientations in talk.
