Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis The Journey of Tai-me by : N. Scott Momaday
Download or read book The Journey of Tai-me written by N. Scott Momaday and published by UNM Press. This book was released on 2011-10-16 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Tai-me" is a traditional medicine bundle used by the Kiowa in their Sun Dance. The bundle has been handed down from generation to generation, through the nineteenth century and into the twentieth. N. Scott Momaday made this discovery when he began his journey to learn about the Kiowa and his paternal lineage. Following the death of his beloved Kiowa grandmother, Aho, in 1963 Momaday set out on his quest to learn and document the Kiowa heritage, stories, and folklore. His Kiowa-speaking father, artist Al Momaday, served as translator when Scott visited tribal elders to ask about their memories and stories. Scott gathered these stories into The Journey of Tai-me. Originally published only in a limited edition in 1967, The Journey of Tai-me is recognized as the basis from which Momaday's more popular The Way to Rainy Mountain grew. When compiling The Way to Rainy Mountain, published by the University of New Mexico Press, Momaday added his own memories and some poems.
Book Synopsis A Convergence of Civilizations by : Youssef Courbage
Download or read book A Convergence of Civilizations written by Youssef Courbage and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2011-06-07 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are told that Western/Christian and Muslim/Arab civilizations are heading towards inevitable conflict. The demographics of the West remain sluggish, while the population of the Muslim world explodes, widening the cultural gap and all but guaranteeing the outbreak of war. Leaving aside the media's sound and fury on this issue, measured analysis shows another reality taking shape: rapprochement between these two civilizations, benefiting from a universal movement with roots in the Enlightenment. The historical and geographical sweep of this book discredits the notion of a specific Islamic demography. The range of fertility among Muslim women, for example, is as varied as religious behavior among Muslims in general. Whether agnostics, fundamentalist Salafis, or al-Qaeda activists, Muslims are a diverse group that prove the variety and individuality of Islam. Youssef Courbage and Emmanuel Todd consider different degrees of literacy, patriarchy, and defensive reactions among minority Muslim populations, underscoring the spread of massive secularization throughout the Arab and Muslim world. In this regard, they argue, there is very little to distinguish the evolution of Islam from the history of Christianity, especially with Muslims now entering a global modernity. Sensitive to demographic variables and their reflection of personal and social truths, Courbage and Todd upend a dangerous meme: that we live in a fractured world close to crisis, struggling with an epidemic of closed cultures and minds made different by religion.

Book Synopsis What Expert Teachers Do by : John Loughran
Download or read book What Expert Teachers Do written by John Loughran and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-07-26 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do expert teachers do it? How do they enhance student learning? How do they manage the dilemmas and tensions inherent in working with 25 different students in every lesson? Internationally respected teacher educator John Loughran argues that teachers’ knowledge of what they do is largely tacit and often misunderstood. In this book, he distils the essence of professional practice for classroom teachers. Drawing on the best research on pedagogy, he outlines the crucial principles of teaching and learning, and shows how they are translated into practice using real classroom examples. He emphasises that teaching procedures need to be part of an integrated approach, so that they are genuinely meaningful and result in learning. Throughout, he shows how teachers can engage their students in ways that create a real ‘need to know’, and a desire to become active learners. What Expert Teachers Do is for teachers who want to become really accomplished practitioners.

Book Synopsis Professional Development Schools by : Ismat Abdal-Haqq
Download or read book Professional Development Schools written by Ismat Abdal-Haqq and published by Corwin. This book was released on 1998 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professional Development Schools offers a close-up, comprehensive look at the state of professional development schools in the United States today. The vision of an ideal professional development school (PDS) is drawn from the best-known P-12 practices and optimum sites for preparing novice teachers. This "ideal" PDS would continually generate, test, and refine new knowledge and organizational structures. Abdal-Haqq poses the following questions regarding whether the PDS is performing its intended role: Is the PDS improving the curriculum, instruction, and structure of P-12 schools through professional development of educators? and Is it making substantive, positive differences in students' learning levels? To find answers, the author examines substantial amounts of evidence from various sources: student interviews and follow-up studies with teacher education graduates; surveys with preservice teachers on attitudes, beliefs, and self-efficacy; and reviews in student journals. Abdal-Haqq also investigates the important questions of time and money. She explores the kinds of additional fiscal and human resources necessary to start up and sustain a PDS.

Book Synopsis Curriculum Theorizing and Teacher Education by : Anne M Phelan
Download or read book Curriculum Theorizing and Teacher Education written by Anne M Phelan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-02-11 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If teacher education, as a field of study, is to contribute to the revitalization, re-moralization and re-politicization of Education, this book argues that it needs to be alert to questions of teachers’ intellectual and political freedom and to concerns about the legitimacy of what we do in teacher education, in the name of Education. Anne Phelan demonstrates how curriculum theorizing can serve such an educational project by engaging concerns about subjectivity (human agency and action), society, and historical moment, thereby widening the field of insight in teacher education and informing debates about new trajectories for policy and practice. Exploring teacher education through ethical, political, aesthetic vocabularies, drawn from the Humanities, is vital at a time when the dehumanizing influences of performativity, standardization and accountability are evident in education systems across the world, and when we are in danger of losing the things that we most value and are the least measurable - relationships, independent thought, and ethical judgment. Curriculum Theorizing and Teacher Education will be of interest to teacher educators who are practicing, researching, or (re)designing teacher education, as well as policy makers who are curious about new possibilities for framing the "problem" of teacher education at provincial, state and federal levels.

Book Synopsis Disturbing Practice by : Avner Segall
Download or read book Disturbing Practice written by Avner Segall and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 2002 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation Segall (teacher education, Michigan State U.) presents this critical analysis of teacher education, based on a year-long study of six social studies teacher trainees at the University of Western Canada. The author raises questions about what and how teacher trainees "learn, do not learn, and learn not to learn" in preservice education courses; how the structures, discourses, and practices in these courses encourage students to learn some things and not others; and how typical teacher trainee courses influence the classroom choices later made by graduates when they become teachers. Segall argues that traditional teacher training courses encourage compliance over true critical thinking, making it difficult to produce "critical teachers who provide critical education in our schools." Book Synopsis Innovations in Teacher Education by : Clive Beck
Download or read book Innovations in Teacher Education written by Clive Beck and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive, "social constructivist" approach to preservice education. Written in a clear, accessible style, it presents key principles of teacher education and concrete examples from eight successful programs in Australia, Canada, and the United States. It extends constructivism beyond Piaget and Vygotsky to more recent theorists such as Barthes and Derrida, indicating how such an approach can lead to engaging, effective education. Clive Beck and Clare Kosnik advocate an approach to teacher education that is highly original, linking integration, community components, and inquiry to a degree not commonly found in preservice programs, and they show in detail how to implement these elements.
