Book Synopsis Une certaine idée de l'Europe by : George Steiner
Download or read book Une certaine idée de l'Europe written by George Steiner and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

The book presents the unique perspective of someone who witnessed the birth of European integration, was first an Advocate General and then a Judge of the Court of Justice of the European Community and who carried an unfaltering belief in the promises and advantages of a federal Europe.
Book Synopsis L’idée de l’Europe by : Rotraud von Kulessa
Download or read book L’idée de l’Europe written by Rotraud von Kulessa and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2017-05-01 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. In view of the challenges—many of which are political—that different European countries are currently facing, scholars who work on the 18th century have compiled this anthology which includes earlier recognitions of common values and past considerations of questions which often remain pertinent nowadays. During the Enlightenment, many men and women of letters envisaged the continent’s future in particular when stressing their hope that peace could be secured in Europe. The texts gathered here, and signed by major thinkers of the time (Rousseau, Montesquieu, Voltaire, Kant, Hume or Staël for instance), as well as by writers history has forgotten, present the reflections, with a couple of chronological extensions (from Sully to Victor Hugo) of authors from the long eighteenth century—the French Empire and the fall of Napoleon generated numerous upheavals—on Europe, its history, its diversity, but also on what the nations, which, in all their diversity, make up a geographical unit, have in common. They show the historical origins of the project of a European union, the desire to consolidate the continent’s ties to the Maghreb or to Turkey, the importance granted to commerce and the worries engendered by history’s convulsions, but also the hope vested in future generations. The Société française d’étude du XVIIIe siècle, Augsburg University and the University of Oxford have generously contributed towards the publication of this volume.

Book Synopsis In the Shadow of the General by : Sudhir Hazareesingh
Download or read book In the Shadow of the General written by Sudhir Hazareesingh and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-06-01 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles De Gaulle's leadership of the French while in exile during World War II cemented his place in history. In contemporary France, he is the stuff of legend, consistently acclaimed as the nation's pre-eminent historical figure. But paradoxes abound. For one thing, his personal popularity sits oddly with his social origins and professional background. Neither the Army nor the Catholic Church is particularly well-regarded in France today, as they are seen to represent antiquated traditions and values. So why, then, do the French nonetheless identify with, celebrate, and even revere this austere and devout Catholic, who remained closely wedded to military values throughout his life? In The Shadow of the General resolves this mystery and explains how de Gaulle has come to occupy such a privileged position in the French imagination. Sudhir Hazareesingh's story of how an individual life was transformed into national myth also tells a great deal about the French collective self in the twenty-first century: its fractured memory, its aspirations to greatness, and its manifold anxieties. Indeed, alongside the tale of de Gaulle's legacy, the author unfolds a much broader narrative: the story of modern France.

Book Synopsis Europe's Other by : Peter Fitzpatrick
Download or read book Europe's Other written by Peter Fitzpatrick and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-04 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1998, this volume focuses critically on the European identity of the law of the European Union, of national law and the law of human rights. It is primarily concerned with the ways in which European identity is created through the rejection of a malign Other constituted in opposition to all that a virtuous Europe and its law, are supposed to be. The construction of this Other is explored in claims of the EU legal order to a unity and coherence transcending the nation-state; in the assertion of a European identity through laws effecting cultural, immigration and security policies; and in the claims to a lofty 'European-ness' made by national law and the European Convention on Human Rights. A major contribution to the understanding of European Law in the terms of the debates over modernity and postmodernity, this book will interest those involved with studies of the European Union and its law, with critical legal studies and also with socio-legal studies.
Book Synopsis Balance of Power and Norm Hierarchy: Franco-British Diplomacy after the Peace of Utrecht by : Frederik Dhondt
Download or read book Balance of Power and Norm Hierarchy: Franco-British Diplomacy after the Peace of Utrecht written by Frederik Dhondt and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-05-19 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Balance of Power and Norm Hierarchy: Franco-British Diplomacy after the Peace of Utrecht offers a detailed study of French and British diplomacy in the age of ‘Walpole and Fleury’. After Louis XIV’s decease, European international relations were dominated by the collaboration between James Stanhope and Guillaume Dubois. Their alliance focused on the amendment and enlargement of the peace treaties of Utrecht, Rastatt and Baden. In-depth analysis of vast archival material uncovers the practical legal arguments used between Hampton Court and Versailles. ‘Balance of Power’ or ‘Tranquillity of Europe’ were in fact metaphors for the predominance of treaty law even over the most fundamental municipal norms. An implacable logic of norm hierarchy allowed to consolidate peace in Europe.

Book Synopsis Cultures nationales et identité communautaire by : Marloes Beers
Download or read book Cultures nationales et identité communautaire written by Marloes Beers and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2010 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The issue of a common European identity has been the subject of academic research from diverse perspectives. This book approaches the theme of European identity through the interpretive lens of both European public space and the experience of living together. Young scholars in the field of European studies identify instruments for the development of a European identity and analyse their characteristics and shortcomings. These proceedings offer a spectrum of perspectives on the development of a European identity.

Download or read book L'Europe written by Benjamin Angel and published by Editions Gallimard. This book was released on 2008 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
