Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Underworlds of Memory argues persuasively that the literary works of the expatriate German author W. G. Sebald can best be understood through the lens of the classical genre of epic. Scholars often read Sebald’s work as a project of cultural memory that aims to reevaluate Europe's past in the wake of the traumatic and complex events of the twentieth century. Sebald’s characters seek out the traces of Europe’s destructive history in strange places. They linger in disused train stations, pause before works of art, and return to childhood homes that turn out to be more foreign than any place they have visited. Underworlds of Memory demonstrates that these strange encounters with the past are based on central tropes of classical epic: the journey to the underworld, the encounter with a work of art, and the return to the homeland. Sebald thus follows in the footsteps of German Jewish authors, including Peter Weiss, Siegfried Kracauer, and Jean Améry, who use these same epic tropes to reconsider the cultural memory of the Holocaust. Underworlds of Memory reads Sebald's works together with the works of these German Jewish authors and the classical epics of Homer and Virgil in order to describe and trace the origins of the unique intervention into cultural memory they embody.

Book excerpt: Classical Memories is an intervention into the field of adaptation studies, taking the example of classical reception to show that adaptation is a process that can be driven by and produce intertextual memories. I see ‘classical memories’ as a memory-driven type of adaptation that draws on and reproduces schematic and otherwise de-contextualised conceptions of antiquity and its cultural ‘exports’ in, broadly speaking, the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. These memory-driven adaptations differ, often in significant ways, from more traditional adaptations that seek to either continue or deconstruct a long-running tradition that can be traced back to antiquity as well as its canonical points of reception in later ages. When investigating such a popular and widespread set of narratives, characters, and images like those that remain of Graeco-Roman antiquity, terms like ‘adaptation’ and ‘reception’ could and should be nuanced further to allow us to understand the complex interactions between modern works and classical antiquity in more detail, particularly when it pertains to postcolonial or post-digital classical reception. In Classical Memories, I propose that understanding certain types of adaptations as intertextual memories allows us to do just that.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a case for how and why people in archaic and classical Greece worshipped Underworld gods. These gods are often portrayed as malevolent and transgressive, giving an impression that ancient worshippers derived little or no benefit from developing ongoing relationships with them. In this book, the first book-length study that focuses on Underworld gods as an integral part of the religious landscape of the period, Mackin Roberts challenges this view and shows that Underworld gods are, in many cases, approached and ‘befriended’ in the same way as any other kind of god. Underworld Gods in Ancient Greek Religion provides a fascinating insight into the worship of these deities, and will be of interest to anyone working on ancient Greek religion and cult.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was first published in 2004. Plato, Aristophanes and the creators of the 'Orphic' gold tablets employ the traditional tale of a journey to the realm of the dead to redefine, within the mythic narrative, the boundaries of their societies. Rather than being the relics of a faded ritual tradition or the products of Orphic influence, these myths can only reveal their meanings through a close analysis of the specific ways in which each author makes use of the tradition. For these authors, myth is an agonistic discourse, neither a kind of sacred dogma nor a mere literary diversion, but rather a flexible tool that serves the wide variety of uses to which it is put. The traditional tale of the journey to the Underworld in Greek mythology is neither simple nor single, but each telling reveals a perspective on the cosmos, a reflection of the order of this world through the image of the other.

When Autumn goes against her husband’s wishes and lowers the sentence of one soul, she gets thrown into the River of Forgetfulness, and loses her memory. Proud, old Hades is a papa-to-be, and he’s busy forging golden baby cots and juggling his wife’s testiness. Seems he’s overprotective and a bit of a ‘Dad-zilla.’ But he has every reason to be cautious when he lost his family to the powers of gods. Now he faces losing his wife again, and he’ll do anything to find a way to save her, even if it means he might never return. Hades’ Salvation is a completed series, featuring a grumpy sunshine, billionaire fantasy romance, with a broody, cinnamon roll Greek god, and loads of flower puns. This is the second series in the Godverse universe, following on from Cupid’s Surrender, but can be read as a standalone series.

"...Extraordinary...Its bravery, irony, humour and intelligence - everything shines through the transparent prose...a remarkable literary voice, or melding of three voices--the autobiographical, the poetic, and the allegorical." - Dr. Oliver Sacks "The life of an individual is as complex as a maze of reflecting mirrors. The life of a family is even more so." Doris Brett is an award-winning writer and poet. 'I forget who said that the prospect of impending death concentrates the mind wonderfully . . . clarifying is the word I keep thinking of. But this is not the clarifying of a mist gently evaporating to reveal answers. This is the clarifying of paint-stripper; a solvent that stings and burns with its harshness, but reveals what was truly there all the time.' When Doris Brett was diagnosed with cancer several years ago, she began writing a private journal - a traveller's diary through a life-threatening illness. The journal, however, rapidly grew into something much more than that. Cancer became the catalyst for an inner journey - a journey through self. Evocatively told via three voices - the diarist, the poet, and the voice of fairytale and myth - this memoir explores the intricate dynamics of family, truth and memory. Poignant and compelling, Eating the Underworld is a sharply observed, often unexpectedly funny book about change, transformation and the constant renewal of self throughout our lives. 'As with any descent into a feared and terrifying country - whether it is the country of illness or the country of a grieving heart - we have entered the underworld. And we have eaten of its fruit . . . the knowledge of ourselves, the knowledge of others. We cannot remain unchanged.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Name of the Mother examines the cultural relationship between African American intellectuals and Italian American writers and artists, and how it relates to American blackness in the twentieth century. Samuele Pardini links African American literature to the Mediterranean tradition of the Italian immigrants and examines both against the white intellectual discourse that defines modernism in the West. This previously unexamined encounter offers a hybrid, transnational model of modernity capable of producing democratic forms of aesthetics, social consciousness, and political economy. This volume emphasizes the racial "in-betweenness" of Italian Americans rearticulated as "invisible blackness," a view that enlarges and complicates the color-based dimensions of American racial discourse. This strikingly original work will interest a wide spectrum of scholars in American Studies and the humanities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: • Examines how each dimension influences Earth, its levels of creative expression, and the sciences that describe each one • Provides meditations to open you to the experience of each dimension and all nine dimensions as an integrated whole • Includes new evidence for the nine dimensions from the supercomputer Blue Brain Project and recently discovered ancient technology As revealed by the Pleiadians via renowned author Barbara Hand Clow, Earth holds nine dimensions of consciousness that humans can currently access. Long ago, the ability to access all nine dimensions was natural for humans. As we collectively heal from ancestral trauma and enter the Age of Light, our access to the nine dimensions is reopening and our ability to learn from and consciously utilize these higher intelligences in our lives is being restored. In this illuminating guide, Barbara Hand Clow shows how the nine dimensions of consciousness are now being verified by contemporary science. She explains how the first dimension is the center of the Earth and the source of grounding ourselves, the second is between Earth’s center and the surface, the third is linear space and time experienced on Earth’s crust, the fourth is the realm of our collective mind, and the higher five celestial dimensions are where we contact the transcendent. She examines how each dimension influences Earth, the sciences that operate there, and the levels of creative expression available. Additionally, Gerry Clow has provided both written and audio meditations to open you to the experience of each dimension and all nine dimensions as an integrated whole. In this 20th anniversary edition, Clow includes updates from her continuing research, including evidence from the supercomputer Blue Brain Project, which mapped nine dimensions in the human brain. She also describes how recent discoveries of ancient technology mirror the Pleiadian dimensional system. Providing a journey through the complex ideas of both modern science and esoteric wisdom, this guide allows you to awaken to the full spectrum of multidimensional consciousness and to connect deeply to the center of our planet and the Divine Cosmos that surrounds us all.
