So who's the dead man? Where is the real Jack? And who's following Clint all over town? Now it's up to the Gunsmith to smoke out a crafty killer, and to do it he makes himself the prime target. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though it has often been passionately criticized--as fraudulent, exploitative, even pagan--the American funeral home has become nearly as inevitable as death itself, an institution firmly embedded in our culture. But how did the funeral home come to hold such a position? What is its history? And is it guilty of the charges sometimes leveled against it? In Rest in Peace, Gary Laderman traces the origins of American funeral rituals, from the evolution of embalming techniques during and after the Civil War and the shift from home funerals to funeral homes at the turn of the century, to the increasing subordination of priests, ministers, and other religious figures to the funeral director throughout the twentieth century. In doing so he shows that far from manipulating vulnerable mourners, as Jessica Mitford claimed in her best-selling The American Way of Death (1963), funeral directors are highly respected figures whose services reflect the community's deepest needs and wishes. Indeed, Laderman shows that funeral directors generally give the people what they want when it is time to bury our dead. He reveals, for example, that the open casket, often criticized as barbaric, provides a deeply meaningful moment for friends and family who must say goodbye to their loved one. But he also shows how the dead often come back to life in the popular imagination to disturb the peace of the living. Drawing upon interviews with funeral directors, major historical events like the funerals of John F. Kennedy and Rudolf Valentino, films, television, newspaper reports, proposals for funeral reform, and other primary sources, Rest in Peace cuts through the rhetoric to show us the reality--and the real cultural value--of the American funeral.

"On a sunny Wednesday morning in October, a day that would mark the end of one life and the beginning of another, I found out my grouchy next door neighbor was the walking dead. When you turn around expecting to see something familiar, and instead see something else altogether, it takes a little while for your brain to catch up with your eyes. I call it the 'Holy Crap Factor.'" Forced to flee his home and family, twelve-year-old Will Ritter falls in with the Undertakers—a rag-tag army of teenage resistance fighters who've banded together to battle the Corpses. Praise for Ty Drago: "...The author hardly sets a foot or a word wrong."—Publishers Weekly "More, if you please, Mr. Drago."—Booklist

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From award-winning author Loren D. Estleman comes The Undertaker's Wife. The undertaker's wife waits; she weaves; she builds. The undertaker practices his art, the Dismal Trade, with consummate skill. He has raised it to an art through the high craft of the Connable Method. Through it, he has managed to transform the ugliness of death into a thing of dignity and beauty. Victims brutalized by war, street fights, tavern brawls, ambushes, fires, every hazard in a raw West---these, in his hands, become presentable. Everywhere on the frontier, which erupts with life and death, he offers his skill: to the rich of San Francisco, the bawds and ruffians of the Barbary Coast, to Kansas cowboys, outlaws, soldiers, and sheriffs. He is devoted to dignifying the dead. She is devoted to making her marriage whole, in spite of the tragedy that surrounds it and, most especially, in spite of the tragedy that in one terrible afternoon strikes at its center. Today the undertaker is called to disguise the suicide of a famous financier. It is high drama, for only his art can save America's financial markets. Her task on this day is secret, an act of understanding and dedication. In the end, it is the undertaker's wife who, through love, is able to transcend death. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I wish I had not had to write this book because then my lovely son Reuben would still be alive," says David Cohen. "He was adorable, formidably intelligent, a loving son, a loving brother. He died far too young. He had the bad luck to have two grandparents who had addictive personalities. His efforts to resist the lure of drugs failed. And so did I." The Book of My Son Reuben is a personal account of how psychologist David Cohen coped – and did not cope – with the death of his son, Reuben. Offering a unique perspective on the experience of parental loss, it offers a personal and analytical exploration of sorrow and guilt, and of what research tells us about trauma and grief. Illustrated throughout with David Cohen’s personal insight into how he continues to navigate his loss, this honest book provides a deeper understanding of loss for parents who have experienced it, as well as those who support them. The book remembers the many parents who have lost children throughout history and chapters weave personal perspectives with the latest research. It examines the experience of sudden deaths, the failures of society in preventing children from dying, the role of social media, how the loss of a child impacts fathers, siblings and relationships, and the usefulness – or otherwise – of bereavement therapies. A tribute to Reuben’s life, this sensitive volume is for those who have experienced loss and want to gain better understanding of their experience, as well as psychologists, psychotherapists and counsellors working with families.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finding Love in an Upside-Down World is a memoir about the wacky, spontaneous, and humorous adventures of a bright, sassy, spirited girl living with her unconventional, loving family in a small gritty tenement in Hoboken, New Jersey during the 1950s and 60s. A motley cast of zany characters including family members, teachers, neighbors and friends appear and disappear along the way as she travels through grammar, high school and college where she eventually meets, falls in love with her brilliant literature professor, and begins a whirlwind, unforgettable romance. They marry a year later in 1971, and buy an old farm house a short distance away from a theater owned by a colorful community of eccentric actors. The marriage lasts for forty-seven amazing, magical years until death separates them in 2016. Drawing parallels between the unpredictable nature of human existence and the subatomic world of Quantum Mechanics the memoir ends by satirizing how the best intentions of life often go awry. Or as John Lennon once said, “Life is what happens to you, when you’re busy making other plans.” Finding Love in an Upside Down Universe may make you think as well as laugh.
