Book excerpt: This research explores the effects of playing interscholastic sports on labor market income in the United States for males (n=5782) and females (n=6266) who participated in the National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988. Previous research has explored the effects of human capital and social capital on positive life outcomes for interscholastic athletes, but little research has looked into possible cultural capital advantages gained through interscholastic sports participation. Using multiple regression analysis and controlling for the effects of human and social capital, I examine whether participation in interscholastic sports operate as cultural capital. Results indicate that after net of controls the relationship between interscholastic sports participation and labor market income remains positive and significant for males who play sports and females who play the culturally popular sport of basketball. Results also indicate that those male student athletes who play culturally popular sports (football, basketball, or baseball) report more income six years after high school graduation than their counterparts who play a less culturally popular sport. This article provides evidence that cultural capital theory is a useful tool in exploring the relationship between interscholastic sports and labor market income.

Given that the development of meaningful skills is a worthwhile goal of high school athletics, the goal is to test whether participation in high school athletics succeeds in preparing student-athletes for success long after their playing days. Endogeneity concerns center around individuals possessing characteristics which make them both more likely to participate in high school athletics and are positively correlated with wages. The issue of endogeneity is dealt with both by stratification and propensity score matching. Results show that participation in high school athletics leads to better labor market outcomes, specifically an increase in hourly wages, through its development of meaningful and translatable skills.

Book excerpt: The recent NIKE advertisement titled "If You Let Me Play," claims many benefits for girls who play sports. In contrast, there exists a hypothesis that today's society overemphasizes the role of sports to the detriment of some students, in particular inner-city minority males. This paper examines the effects of participating in high school athletics on students' educational and labor market success in order to test these two theories. I make three contributions to the literature. First, I allow the athletics effect to vary across specific team and individual sports. Second, I use instrumental variables estimation to control for self-selection into sports. Finally, I use measures of peer involvement in sports, similar to other work on neighborhood effects, to instrument each individual student's athlete status. Using nationally representative samples from High School and Beyond and the National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988, OLS results show that athletics contributes positively to educational and labor market success for all students except minority females. Controlling for the endogeneity of athletic participation, however, I find significant positive effects only for white students with respect to educational outcomes. This suggests that some of the seemingly beneficial effect of sports reflects underlying differences between athletes and non-athletes.

Most scholarship has focused on the ways that athletic participation during adolescence affects labor market and educational outcomes for its participants. The current project is one of a small number which focuses on the earnings of former college athletes. Using nationally representative data from the National Educational Longitudinal Survey, the current project examines the extent to which college athletes' (both intramural and varsity) earnings are different from their non-participating peers. Further, the research investigates the role that race and gender play in predicting the relationship between early career earnings and collegiate athletic participation. The findings suggest that athletes do earn higher salaries than their peers who did not participate, but that this relationship is dependent upon race, gender, and whether the athlete participated in intramural or varsity sports. The results point to the need for scholarship which utilizes multiple theoretical frameworks to help illuminate the processes which result from athletic participation based on group differences. The paper closes with suggestions for directions of future research in the area.

This ELP includes school improvement initiatives that strengthen interscholastic athletic programming. The plan consisted of the following improvement goals: 1) create a strategic plan to manage, guide, and lead the St. Georges’ interscholastic athletic program 2) implement an academic support program for interscholastic athletes at St. Georges 3) create a professional learning community of coaches more engaged in data- driven decision making. To achieve these goals, a multi-pronged effort addressed issues that in the past have contributed to the mediocre state of St. Georges’ Athletics and will now bring changes to improve the athletic program and academic supports for student athletes. As a result of the improvement effort, the athletics department established a shared program vision and mission, a common language about best practice in the program, better academic support procedures for athletes, and a proposal and plan to enhance the athletic stadium facility. A committed, consistent, and daily effort to communicate to all stakeholders became the norm. Research based strategies were employed to strengthen our understanding of conditions and outcomes in the interscholastic athletics program. The athletics department is now discussing next steps for more informed decision-making about increasing academic support for student athletes with goal of increased student achievement. This portfolio’s first two artifacts draw on literature and data analysis showingpositive relationships between student commitment, achievement measures, and participation in sports. Not only were the results informative and encouraging, this work greatly improved my knowledge of relevant literature and data analysis and has helped as I have undertaken efforts to be evidence-driven more generally in our interscholastic athletic program – a priority also reflected in other artifacts. Collectively, the artifacts in this portfolio illustrate my leadership journey. I explored and led practices that enhanced the athletic experience of our coaches, players, and parents. Plans will be adjusted and enhanced so we continue to move forward and improve the interscholastic experience for students.
