Book excerpt: Understanding of protons and neutrons, or "nucleons"â€"the building blocks of atomic nucleiâ€"has advanced dramatically, both theoretically and experimentally, in the past half century. A central goal of modern nuclear physics is to understand the structure of the proton and neutron directly from the dynamics of their quarks and gluons governed by the theory of their interactions, quantum chromodynamics (QCD), and how nuclear interactions between protons and neutrons emerge from these dynamics. With deeper understanding of the quark-gluon structure of matter, scientists are poised to reach a deeper picture of these building blocks, and atomic nuclei themselves, as collective many-body systems with new emergent behavior. The development of a U.S. domestic electron-ion collider (EIC) facility has the potential to answer questions that are central to completing an understanding of atoms and integral to the agenda of nuclear physics today. This study assesses the merits and significance of the science that could be addressed by an EIC, and its importance to nuclear physics in particular and to the physical sciences in general. It evaluates the significance of the science that would be enabled by the construction of an EIC, its benefits to U.S. leadership in nuclear physics, and the benefits to other fields of science of a U.S.-based EIC.

Book Synopsis Proton Therapy Physics by : Harald Paganetti
Download or read book Proton Therapy Physics written by Harald Paganetti and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-04-19 with total page 691 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proton Therapy Physics goes beyond current books on proton therapy to provide an in-depth overview of the physics aspects of this radiation therapy modality, eliminating the need to dig through information scattered in the medical physics literature. After tracing the history of proton therapy, the book summarizes the atomic and nuclear physics background necessary for understanding proton interactions with tissue. It describes the physics of proton accelerators, the parameters of clinical proton beams, and the mechanisms to generate a conformal dose distribution in a patient. The text then covers detector systems and measuring techniques for reference dosimetry, outlines basic quality assurance and commissioning guidelines, and gives examples of Monte Carlo simulations in proton therapy. The book moves on to discussions of treatment planning for single- and multiple-field uniform doses, dose calculation concepts and algorithms, and precision and uncertainties for nonmoving and moving targets. It also examines computerized treatment plan optimization, methods for in vivo dose or beam range verification, the safety of patients and operating personnel, and the biological implications of using protons from a physics perspective. The final chapter illustrates the use of risk models for common tissue complications in treatment optimization. Along with exploring quality assurance issues and biological considerations, this practical guide collects the latest clinical studies on the use of protons in treatment planning and radiation monitoring. Suitable for both newcomers in medical physics and more seasoned specialists in radiation oncology, the book helps readers understand the uncertainties and limitations of precisely shaped dose distribution.
Book Synopsis Quantum Mechanics by : Nouredine Zettili
Download or read book Quantum Mechanics written by Nouredine Zettili and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2022-09-13 with total page 1028 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: QUANTUM MECHANICS An innovative approach to quantum mechanics that seamlessly combines textbook and problem-solving book into one Quantum Mechanics: Concepts and Applications provides an in-depth treatment of this fundamental theory, combining detailed formalism with straightforward practice. Thoroughly integrating close to seven hundred examples, solved problems, and exercises into a well-structured and comprehensive work, this textbook offers instructors a pedagogically sound teaching tool, students a clear, balanced and modern approach to the subject, and researchers a quick practical guide. The extensive list of fully solved examples and problems have been carefully designed to guide and enable users of the book to become proficient practitioners of quantum mechanics. The text begins with a thorough description of the origins of quantum physics before discussing the mathematical tools required in the field and the postulates upon which it is founded. Quantum Mechanics: Concepts and Applications is broad in scope, covering such aspects as one-dimensional and three- dimensional potentials, angular momentum, rotations and addition of angular momenta, identical particles, time-independent and -dependent approximation methods, scattering theory, relativistic quantum mechanics, and classical field theory among others. Each of these diverse areas are enhanced with a rich collection of illustrative examples and fully-solved problems to ensure complete understanding of this complex topic. Readers of the third edition of Quantum Mechanics: Concepts and Applications will also find: Two new chapters — one dealing with relativistic quantum mechanics and the other with the Lagrangian derivations of the Klein-Gordon and Dirac equations — and three new appendices to support them About 90 solved examples integrated throughout the text that are intended to illustrate individual concepts within a broader topic About 200 fully-solved, multi-step problems at the end of each chapter that integrate multiple concepts introduced throughout the chapter More than 400 unsolved exercises that may be used to practice the ideas presented A Solutions Manual is available only to those instructors adopting the book, on request, offering detailed solutions to all exercises. Quantum Mechanics: Concepts and Applications is a comprehensive textbook which is most useful to senior undergraduate and first-year graduate students seeking mastery of the field, as well as to researchers in need of a quick, practical reference for the various techniques necessary for optimal performance in the subject.

Book excerpt: This book describes the new Circlon Synchronicity philosophy that uses the mechanics of Newton's F=ma for the measurement of energy and matter within a universe of absolute mass, space, time and gravity. The discovery that the electron's mass has been decreasing since the beginning of time reveals the creation of matter in our evolutionary past. This creation story combines the Big Bang theory's measurements with the evolving electrodynamics of circlon shaped electrons, protons and photons. This story begins with red shifted Hubble galaxies and the so called Dark Energy supernovas. Next, the photons of the 2.7˚K Cosmic Blackbody Radiation are created by 2256 decaying neutrons at the end of a stable neutron cloud era. A long time prior to this, all of our electrons and protons were bifurcated from a single anti-Hydrogen atom. This book is illustrated with many circlon models, nuclear structures, charts and equations that depict circlon electrodynamics and the evolution of the universe.
