Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer of any kind is scary, but lung cancer is unique in that most people think that only people who smoke can or do get it. The truth is that anyone can get lung cancer, and it can be deadly. In 2008 (the most recent year numbers are available), 208,493 people in the United States were diagnosed with lung cancer, while 158,592 people in the United States died from lung cancer. Here, Dr. Naheed Ali dispels the notion that only smokers develop lung cancer, but also goes over their increased risk for getting the disease, while also considering the risk factors that non-smokers face. He provides background and tips for combating lung cancer, from prevention, to treatment, to coping with the disease should a person fall victim. In typical fashion, Ali helps readers to understand what lung cancer is, how it develops, its different forms, and how both patients and caregivers can approach healing and treatment. Offering a clear background on the disease and its development, this work will help lung cancer sufferers and their friends and family better cope with and understand the diagnosis.

The main lung image shows metastasis to paratracheal lymph nodes, metastasis to carinal lymph nodes, and a close-up image of a tumor projecting into bronchi. The chart describes how lung cancer is diagnosed and staged and has images of chest x-ray, CT scan, PET scan, and MRI. It lists risk factors, signs and symptoms, and treatment options. It also describes how lung cancer can be prevented and shows an image of a cigarette in ashtray with the statistic that approximately 90 per cent of lung cancer deaths are related to smoking. Lung cancer is a serious illness—one that is considered among medicine's most dreaded diagnoses. Alone, it's responsible for 29 percent of cancer deaths in the United States and causes more deaths than breast, colon, ovarian, and prostate cancer combined! Additionally, lung cancer isn't typically discovered until it causes symptoms, at which point options are limited and the chances of a cure greatly reduced. But it doesn't have to be this way. In this book, Dr. Eric Presser provides an empowering, comprehensive guide to lung cancer for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the treatments available, coping with the diagnosis, and dealing with the side effects associated with the disease on both patients and their loved ones. His book offers a complete resource for anyone touched by lung cancer, presenting the latest scientifically tested information to help reduce the rates of illness and infirmity and ultimately make lung cancer a thing of the past. The book first covers the basic information necessary to understand lung cancer, including lung anatomy. Dr. Presser then identifies the six steps that will with help people cope with lung cancer and take charge of their lives. The final section focuses on nutrition and lung cancer in addition to practical concerns such as health insurance, work and disability, and financial challenges.

Book excerpt: Lung cancer has seen a paradigm shift in disease treatment over the past few years, with major changes in the therapeutic drugs now available as well as in the overall management approach. For targeted and immunotherapeutic approaches, understanding the biology of acquired resistance is a key strategy that has yielded productive advances in the subsequent treatment. Future advances also include incorporating biomarker data obtained from solid and liquid biopsies, as well as combination of immunotherapy with radiotherapy and in special populations such patients with CNS involvement.

Book excerpt: This, the first of two volumes on personalized medicine in lung cancer, touches on the core issues related to the understanding of lung cancer—statistics and epidemiology of lung cancer—along with the incidence of lung cancer in non-smokers. A major focus of this volume is the state of current therapies against lung cancer—immune, targeted therapies against EGFR TKIs, KRAS, ALK, angiogenesis; the associated challenges, especially resistance mechanisms; and recent progress in targeted drug development based on metal chemistry. Chapters are written by some of the leading experts in the field, who provide a better understanding of lung cancer, the factors that make it lethal, and current research focused on developing personalized treatment plans. With a unique mix of topics, this volume summarizes the current state-of-knowledge on lung cancer and the available therapies.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lung cancer is one of the biggest challenges in oncology today. The challenge is due to the recognition of the possibility of prevention in at least 70-80 % of all the cases and the extreme difficulties encountered in the treatment of this neoplasm. Despite the knowledge of prevention measures such as cessation of cigarette smoking the incidence continues to increase in many countries. The increase is particularly notable in females in the west ernized countries where the death rate in females in certain regions sur passes that of breast cancer. Furthermore, in many developing countries lung cancer is now being diagnosed with increasing frequency in both sexes and it is expected to be a major cause of death in those countries later in this century or the beginning of next century if the tobacco consumption will continue its rapid rise. With respect to therapy the 1970'es brought considerable progress in understanding of the clinical behaviour of lung cancer thereby establishing the importance of distinguishing between the major histologic types. Thera peutic advancement was particularly experienced in small cell carcinoma with the introduction of combination chemotherapy after this special dis ease entity among lung cancers was recognized as being a disseminated dis ease in almost all cases at the time of diagnosis. It was expected that the improvement in therapy would have continued in the early 1980'es, not only for small cell lung cancer but also for the other cell types.

Book excerpt: This report considers the biological and behavioral mechanisms that may underlie the pathogenicity of tobacco smoke. Many Surgeon General's reports have considered research findings on mechanisms in assessing the biological plausibility of associations observed in epidemiologic studies. Mechanisms of disease are important because they may provide plausibility, which is one of the guideline criteria for assessing evidence on causation. This report specifically reviews the evidence on the potential mechanisms by which smoking causes diseases and considers whether a mechanism is likely to be operative in the production of human disease by tobacco smoke. This evidence is relevant to understanding how smoking causes disease, to identifying those who may be particularly susceptible, and to assessing the potential risks of tobacco products.
