Book excerpt: The Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC) conducted several studies to assess the presence of nonresponse bias in estimates from the 2012 Workplace and Gender Relations Survey of Active Duty Members (2012 WGRA). The objective of this research was to assess the extent of nonresponse bias for the estimated rate of unwanted sexual contact (USC rate) in the active duty military. The level of nonresponse bias (NRB) can vary for every question on the survey, but DMDC focused on the USC rate because this is the central question on the survey. Nonresponse bias occurs when survey respondents are systematically different from the nonrespondents. Nonresponse bias can occur with high or low survey response rates, but the decrease in survey response rates in the past decade has resulted in a greater focus on potential NRB. DMDC investigated the presence of nonresponse bias using many different methods, and this paper summarizes the following methods and results: 1. Analyze response rates from 2012 WGRA and other DMDC surveys, 2. Evaluate composition of sample compared with survey respondents, 3. Assess how effectively DMDC weighting reduces nonresponse bias, 4. Use late respondents as a proxy for nonrespondents, 5. Use hard-to-reach (HTR) respondents as a proxy for nonrespondents, 6. Analyze item missing data for USC question, 7. Analyze whether past USC victims' respond to later WGRA surveys at different rates. Based on these studies, it is unlikely that the 2012 WGRA overestimates the USC rate, and there is some evidence that the survey underestimates the USC rate, although the level of nonresponse bias appears to be modest.

Book excerpt: For many household surveys in the United States, responses rates have been steadily declining for at least the past two decades. A similar decline in survey response can be observed in all wealthy countries. Efforts to raise response rates have used such strategies as monetary incentives or repeated attempts to contact sample members and obtain completed interviews, but these strategies increase the costs of surveys. This review addresses the core issues regarding survey nonresponse. It considers why response rates are declining and what that means for the accuracy of survey results. These trends are of particular concern for the social science community, which is heavily invested in obtaining information from household surveys. The evidence to date makes it apparent that current trends in nonresponse, if not arrested, threaten to undermine the potential of household surveys to elicit information that assists in understanding social and economic issues. The trends also threaten to weaken the validity of inferences drawn from estimates based on those surveys. High nonresponse rates create the potential or risk for bias in estimates and affect survey design, data collection, estimation, and analysis. The survey community is painfully aware of these trends and has responded aggressively to these threats. The interview modes employed by surveys in the public and private sectors have proliferated as new technologies and methods have emerged and matured. To the traditional trio of mail, telephone, and face-to-face surveys have been added interactive voice response (IVR), audio computer-assisted self-interviewing (ACASI), web surveys, and a number of hybrid methods. Similarly, a growing research agenda has emerged in the past decade or so focused on seeking solutions to various aspects of the problem of survey nonresponse; the potential solutions that have been considered range from better training and deployment of interviewers to more use of incentives, better use of the information collected in the data collection, and increased use of auxiliary information from other sources in survey design and data collection. Nonresponse in Social Science Surveys: A Research Agenda also documents the increased use of information collected in the survey process in nonresponse adjustment.

As a result, ground forces have long relied on incineration in open-air pits as a means of getting rid of refuse. Concerns over possible adverse effects of exposure to smoke from trash burning in the theater were first expressed in the wake of the 1990â€"1991 Gulf War and stimulated a series of studies that indicated that exposures to smoke from oil-well fires and from other combustion sources, including waste burning, were stressors for troops. In January 2013, Congress directed the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to establish and maintain a registry for service members who may have been exposed to toxic airborne chemicals and fumes generated by open burn pits. Assessment of the Department of Veterans Affairs Airborne Hazards and Open Burn Pit Registry analyzes the initial months of data collected by the registry and offers recommendations on ways to improve the instrument and best use the information it collects. This report assesses the effectiveness of the VA's information gathering efforts and provides recommendations for addressing the future medical needs of the affected groups, and provides recommendations on collecting, maintaining, and monitoring information collected by the VA's Airborne Hazards and Open Burn Pit Registry.

The first computer-based survey minimized the differences between itself and the paper-based survey to more accurately quantify any bias due solely to the computer medium. The more complex survey served to maximize differences between itself and the other computer-based survey to more accurately quantify any bias due to programmatic complexity. In addition, responses from groups stratified on gender (men and women) and military commission (officers and enlisted) were compared between the three survey types. The results showed that no statistically significant differences could be detected between the paper and computer surveys overall and for men, women, officer, and enlisted personnel. In the context of non-sensitive, organizational research, paper and computer surveys can be considered equivalent research mediums with regard to reliability and validity.

Very little research pertaining to this specific group was located during the literature review. Four response rate factors taken from studies conducted in the general public were selected for this research topic: questionnaire length, questionnaire delivery mode (postal, e-mail, web-based, direct administration, and mixed mode), use of advance notices, and use of follow-up reminders. Data were gathered for a meta-analysis of 73 previously published studies which utilized a survey or questionnaire to collect data from a military-only sample. After the data were analyzed, only two response rate factors produced significant results for this study: survey length and survey delivery mode. Results were discussed, and recommended research areas and conclusions are given.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of calling in the military. As the military continues to increase retention goals despite budget constraints, it must adopt ways to better promote career growth and enhance life satisfaction for its personnel. This can be accomplished through recruiting, grooming, and retaining those individuals who have a calling to military service. My study answered the following research questions: (1) Is calling related to positive military career outcomes? (2) Does calling spark and deepen commitment and retention? (3) Does calling promote career growth for those "called" to service? (4) Does calling increase life satisfaction? (5) How is calling related to military retention? Data from surveys of Naval Postgraduate School students reveal many work-related correlations with calling and calling's positive effects. My research findings suggest that recruiting, retaining, and promoting those who are called to military service will not only decrease turnover, but also provide a better military workforce. I recommend incorporating calling into military employment practices for better human resources results and increased organizational success. The introduction captures a general summary of the research while shedding light on the problem statement and research questions, which will be further examined and explained in subsequent chapters. Chapter II is the literature review, which reveals the comprehensive studies related to calling and other work-related outcomes. The literature review includes organizational commitment, career fit, turnover, life satisfaction, career plateau, social capital, and protean career orientation (PCO). This review highlights literature to generate a better overall understanding of the meaning of a calling, how it applies in various career fields, and how it affects other work-related constructs. Through the detailed literature review, we can understand and relate to the impact of calling in career fields outside the military (e.g., musicians). Chapter III lists the hypotheses of this study, linking the literature review to the research. Chapter III presents the relationships between calling and other work-related outcomes. Chapter IV describes the methodologies, including a generous sample data collection exercised in this study. The survey design is explained in this chapter. Chapter IV presents the core of data in this research and the positive means of calling in the military within a specific group of the study. Chapter V provides the results of this study, highlighting the key findings and meaningful themes abstracted from individual surveys. Chapter V offers the most relevant and inspiring findings in this research. Finally, Chapter VI offers the direct conclusions and implications of this study, wrapping up with recommendations for areas of further research.
