Book excerpt: When it comes to reading and understanding the Bible, a dangerous phrase is used by non-Christians and even some believers: "Well, that's your interpretation." It is true that without some care in your interpretation, you can "make" the Bible say almost anything. Dig Deeper is written out of the conviction that there is a right way to understand the Bible and a wrong way, and the authors show us how to read it correctly. Dig Deeper offers sixteen "tools" readers can use to get to the bottom of any Bible passage and discover its intended meaning. Examples show how each tool helps readers discover something exciting and relevant in a passage, and the "Dig deeper" exercises offer the opportunity to practice using the tools. The book's brevity and easy-to-read format make it ideal for Christians who want to get the most out of their Bible.

Download or read book Word Pictures written by Brian Godawa and published by IVP Books. This book was released on 2009-08-12 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Artist and screen writer Brian Godawa used to revel in his ability to argue the truth of the gospel, often crushing his opponents in the process. In time, however, he began to realize that winning an argument about the logic of Christianity did not equal persuading people to follow Jesus. What was missing? Through prayer and searching the Scriptures, Godawa realized that while God cares deeply for rationality, propositional truths were not the only, or even the primary, tools he used to reach people with his Truth. In fact, Godawa discovered that story, metaphor and imagery were central to God's communication style because they could go places reason could never go: into the heart. In his refreshing and challenging book, Godawa helps you break free from the spiritual suffocation of heady faith. Without negating the importance of reason and doctrine, Godawa challenges you to move from understanding the Bible "literally" to "literarily" by exploring the poetry, parables and metaphors found in God's Word. Weaving historical insight, pop culture and personal narrative throughout, Godawa reveals the importance God places on imagination and creativity in the Scriptures, and provides a biblical foundation for Christians to pursue image, beauty, wonder and mystery in their faith. For any Christian who wants to learn how to communicate and defend the Gospel in a postmodern context, this book will help you find a path between the two extremes of intellectualized faith and anti-intellectual faith by recovering a biblical balance between intellect and imagination.

Book Synopsis Understanding God's Word by : Timothy Lawrence Farrell
Download or read book Understanding God's Word written by Timothy Lawrence Farrell and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2024-03-22 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spiritual Understanding Can God's living Word become more living? Not for God; He knows who He is, and He never changes. For us, yes. That's why the Bible's progressive knowledge of our God is built on those who have answered their call to speak God's Word in spirit and truth in the wisdom and understanding of their time and space. We grow in God's grace as the Holy Spirit teaches us line upon line and precept upon precept until the day dawns and the morning star shines brightly in our hearts. He must increase as we decrease, which is the same as renewing our minds to the new creation God has birthed in us. The same Spirit who spoke to us in the past speaks to us today. That same Spirit of God makes us one in the Son by God's grace by operating on the inside of us. Growing in the knowledge of our resurrected Savior, Jesus Christ, is our responsibility for spiritual training and nourishment. God's responsibility is to train His kids in the right way to grow in His grace and not our efforts. Each of our gifts and callings is written in God's Word. Because they come from God's Word, God has made it possible for us to co-labor with Him for our eternal rewards by digging into God's Word with the helper. We should never read God's Word with head knowledge only because God's Word is written in spirit and truth. First, we must be born of God by confessing our faith in Jesus's name above any other man claiming to be God or claiming another God. Then, we must recognize the difference between interpreting God's Word with our head because head knowledge relies on the law for self-glorification. We must ask the helper because He's our teacher. God is love, and love doesn't enforce its will on anyone unless it's protecting Her own. So, ask. Whenever we read/hear the Holy Bible, we approach it with the attitude of a curious child attentive to being instructed by our spiritual parents. Yes, parents, because the Spirit and the Word are our teachers. They are the image and likeness of the unseen and seen Father, like us, in Him, male being the Word and female relative to being the Spirit in all believers-one spirit, one Lord, etc. Hearing God's Word in spirit and truth is how this is done. Natural ears don't receive the things of God, so if we're not receiving Godly wisdom and understanding, it's because we're attempting to understand God without God. He's given us ears to hear because believers are new creations with spiritual ears tuned to eating spiritual food to become mature in Him, who, by constant use, have trained our senses to distinguish good from evil. The Holy Bible is the source of all life because it operates not from man's mind but from Christ's. What a glorious thing it is to walk with Christ's mind in good times and bad times until God's love translates us into His everlasting glory.
