Book excerpt: Our Landscape Heritage provides an overview of the history and ecological makeup of the landscapes of New Brunswick to help ecological seekers starting out with basic knowledge about geology, soils, climate, and vegetation, to better understand why plants and animals are today distributed as they are. Part I outlines the rationale and history of ecological land classification (ELC) in New Brunswick, and presents basic scientific concepts and facts that help the reader to interpret the information that follows. Part II, Portrait of New Brunswick Ecoregions and Ecodistricts presents a detailed look at the variety and distribution of ecosystems across the geographic expanse of New Brunswick. Each of the seven chapters of Part II provides a high level description of the ecoregion, followed by detailed descriptions of each ecodistrict within the ecoregion.--Includes text from document.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1980 a group of scientists censusing marine mammals in the Bay of Fundy was astonished by the sight of 25 right whales. Until that time, scientists believed the North Atlantic right whale was extinct or nearly so. The sightings electrified the research community, spurring a quarter century of exploration, which is documented here.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Although eelgrass (Zostera marina) has been widely recognized as an important component of coastal ecosystems in Eastern Canada, the workshop held 17-18 December 2003, in Sackville, New Brunswick, was the first meeting of its kind to bring together people interested in the status and conservation of eelgrass in this region. The workshop had three main themes: mapping and monitoring changes in eelgrass distribution and abundance; the importance of eelgrass to coastal ecosystems; and causes of eelgrass declines"--Summary.
Book Synopsis Coastal Wetlands: Alteration and Remediation by : Charles W. Finkl
Download or read book Coastal Wetlands: Alteration and Remediation written by Charles W. Finkl and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-07-18 with total page 879 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book delves into human-induced and natural impacts on coastal wetlands, intended or otherwise, through a series of vignettes that elucidate the environmental insults and efforts at amelioration and remediation. The alteration, and subsequent restoration, of wetland habitats remain key issues among coastal scientists. These topics are introduced through case studies and pilot programs that are designed to better understand the best practices of trying to save what is left of these fragile ecosystems. Local approaches, as well as national and international efforts to restore the functionality of marsh systems are summarily approached and evaluated by their efficacy in producing resilient reclamations in terms of climate-smart habitat conservation. The outlook of this work is global in extent and local by intent. Included here in summarized form are professional opinions of experts in the field that investigate the crux of the matter, which proves to be human pressure on coastal wetland environments. Even though conservation and preservation of these delicate environmental systems may be coming at a later date, many multi-pronged approaches show promise through advances in education, litigation, and engineering to achieve sustainable coastal systems. The examples in this book are not only of interest to those working exclusively with coastal wetlands, but also to those working to protect the surrounding coastal areas of all types.

Book Synopsis From Environmental to Comprehensive Security by : Arthur H. Westing
Download or read book From Environmental to Comprehensive Security written by Arthur H. Westing and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-07-01 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work presents the evolution of the traditional concept of "national security" as military security to additionally embrace "environmental security" and then necessarily also "social (societal) security", thence to be termed "comprehensive human security". It accomplishes this primarily by presenting 11 of the author's own benchmark papers published between 1983 and 2010 (additionally providing bibliographic citations to a further 36 of the author's related publications during that period). The work stresses the importance of transfrontier (regional) cooperation, and also recognizes global overpopulation as a key impediment to achieving comprehensive human security.

Book Synopsis Mudflat Ecology by : Peter G. Beninger
Download or read book Mudflat Ecology written by Peter G. Beninger and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-13 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intertidal mudflats are distinct, highly-productive marine habitats which provide important ecosystem services to the land-sea interface. In contrast to other marine habitats, and despite a large body of primary scientific literature, no comprehensive synthesis exists, such that the scattered knowledge base lacks an integrated conceptual framework. We attempt to provide this synthesis by pulling together and contextualizing the different disciplines, tools, and approaches used in the study of intertidal mudflats. The editor pays particular attention to relationships between the various components of the synthesis, both at the conceptual and the operational levels, validating these relationships through close interaction with the various authors.
