Book excerpt: Background: Previous research demonstrates that individuals with visual impairments (VI) are at risk for health-related illnesses attributed to inactivity and low fitness. As patterns of behavior--such as physical activity (PA)--established during childhood and adolescence determine one's risk of developing chronic disease and illness later in life, this is a crucial time of life in which to target motivation and maintenance of a physically active lifestyle. Few studies have examined the use of PA monitoring devices on PA motivation in general, particularly in children, adolescents, or individuals with VI. The purpose of this study was to determine the possible motivational factors of two popular fitness bands and one talking pedometer on the PA motivation of youth with VI, and whether these factors differ based upon sex or VI level. Methods: Participants consisted of 20 youth (13 males, 7 females, Mage=12.65±2.26) with VI. During a weeklong developmental sports camp for youth with VI, participants were placed in groups of 5 and given the two fitness bands and talking pedometer to wear concurrently. Focus groups were conducted at the end of each day; the sessions were recorded and transcribed. Participants responded to questions based on the social-ecological model (SEM) to discern, relative to these exercise devices, various motivators for PA at the intrapersonal, interpersonal, and organizational levels, including: ease of use and access to data, understanding of the data, device preference, interpersonal benefits of using these devices, specific aspects of the devices that were found to be motivating, and suggested changes to the devices. Two researchers developed a coding scheme within an SEM framework using standard qualitative methods and coded responses by VI level, perceived motivation for PA, favorite device, and motivating device components; once consensus was reached, coding was analyzed using NVivo 10. Results: Results included the perceived motivational benefit of using these devices, the variance of device preference based upon VI level and the lack of variance based upon sex, such as a preference for the audible device by those with less vision, and different aspects of each device on three SEM levels that the participants found to be motivating, such as the type of PA measures displayed, the incentive they offered to compete with peers or set PA competition goals, and ways in which the devices could be utilized at the organizational level to improve PA motivation for these participants. Conclusion: Overall, all three PA-monitoring devices were reported to increase the participants' motivation for PA. Device preference did differ by VI level, with those with less sight preferring the auditory device and those with more sight preferring the Nike Fuelband, which had the best visual contrast. All three devices also had aspects that were found to be motivating at the intrapersonal, interpersonal, and organizational levels of the SEM framework, such as the feedback and encouragement they offered, the ability they gave to compete or set goals with peers, and their ability to be used in school physical education classes. In future, the specific motivational aspects of these three devices may be used by PA interventions to increase the PA of this population and decrease rates of chronic illness related to sedentary lifestyle.

Participants were 124 junior high and high school physical education (PE) students. Students completed the Behavioural Regulation in Exercise Questionnaire–2, the Godin Leisure–Time Exercise Questionnaire, the Perceived Competence Scale, and were assigned to keep an online leisure-time physical activity record for three weeks as part of their regular PE class. A 2 (gender) x 4 (trials) repeated measures ANCOVA was used to examine the relationships between recording compliance and the variables of perceived competence, motivation, and physical activity. Results showed a significant interaction between recording compliance and leisure-time physical activity. As students kept the leisure-time physical activity record, boys’ leisure-time physical activity levels significantly increased and girls’ leisure-time physical activity levels significantly decreased. Also, a significant interaction between recording compliance and introjected regulation was found. The more students recorded the less motivated they were by guilt and obligation to exercise in their leisure time. Lastly a significant interaction was found between recording compliance and intrinsic regulation, showing that the more students recorded the more intrinsically motivated they were to exercise in their leisure time. Implications and suggestions are set forth for PE professionals.

Health behaviors are often established during childhood and adolescence that continue into adulthood. The development and integration of healthy lifestyle behaviors are vital through adolescence. Self-determination theory (SDT) offers a theoretical framework for attempting to understand individual differences in motivation and behavior. Recent studies have primarily focused on how adolescents make choices related to eating behaviors, physical activity, and self-care habits, and how the resultant behaviors are measured. Participants in this study were 63 healthy adolescents enrolled in 9th grade health class. All participants provided baseline data at Time 1 and again following the five-week pretest posttest intervention study at Time 2. This study examined the utility of SDT in the development of the Adolescent Intrinsic Motivation, a healthy lifestyle behavior intervention, using the tenets of SDT to explain healthy lifestyle motivational beliefs in adolescents, along with healthy lifestyle behaviors and knowledge. The AIM intervention study introduced basic health recommendations to adolescents in an autonomy-supportive environment, which has been shown to encourage the adolescent to make healthy behavior choices based on their own interest and enjoyment. Preliminary effects of the study indicated that participants receiving the AIM intervention demonstrated significant differences in motivational beliefs, healthy lifestyle knowledge, as well as healthy lifestyle behaviors from Time 1 (baseline) to Time 2 (post-intervention). Results of this study provide support for the use of SDT to address the competence, relatedness, and autonomy of adolescents in the development of health education material. Testing this intervention in a larger, random sampling of schools within the state, or even in more than one state, with a three- or six-month follow-up would be useful in determining the longer-term effects of the intervention.

Book excerpt: Daily moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) is critical for high school (HS) students in rural areas who are not meeting physical activity (PA) guidelines. HS students who are not involved in sports and other activities that help them meet current PA recommendations need additional programs to assist them in achieving this objective. Although PA is vital to their health, limited research has evaluated PA interventions with rural HS students. The two-fold purpose of this dissertation is: (1) Examine autonomous motivation for PA; and (2) Test the acceptability, feasibility, and preliminary efficacy of a PA intervention with rural HS students. The dissertation aims are: (1) To analyze the concept of adolescent autonomous motivation for PA, (2) To test the preliminary efficacy of a 10-week Teen Leisure Time PA Club (TLC) intervention among rural HS students, as compared to a control condition, in: a) increasing MVPA (primary outcome; min/hr.; accelerometer-measured) and decreasing sedentary behavior, body mass index (BMI), percent body fat (% BF), and perceived stress; and b) improving psychosocial (basic psychological needs [BPNs]: competence, autonomy, and relatedness and autonomous motivation for PA), (3) Evaluate the feasibility of the intervention related to: HS students' enrollment, attrition, and attendance in the club; delivery/receipt of avatar motivational messages and weekly PA goals and strategies; and adherence to protocols, (4) To explore HS students' and club instructors' satisfaction with the intervention (individual interviews).Manuscript 1 is a concept analysis of adolescent autonomous motivation for PA. The review utilized Rodger's Evolutionary Model of concept analysis. Five online databases were searched for studies published in English utilizing key words, such as adolescents/teenagers, motivation, autonomous motivation, and PA. The results yielded 1971 records, with 68 articles meeting eligibility criteria. Findings demonstrate that adolescent autonomous motivation for PA is conceptually defined as a personal desire to attain PA because the behavior is fun and enjoyable, or it is an important part of how the adolescent self-identifies. Manuscript 2 and 3 are based on data designed to evaluate a PA intervention. Two rural school districts were approached to participate and students were recruited from their home room classes during school hours. The study population included HS students in grades 9 through 12 that were willing to participate. Manuscript 2 examines quantitative findings from this original intervention study. Measures included the primary outcome of MVPA (via ActiGraph); and secondary outcomes of sedentary behavior, perceived stress, BMI, %BF, and self-report PA. No differences in accelerometer measured or self-reported PA emerged between the intervention and control groups at baseline and post-intervention. Retention rates (83%) and positive feedback from participants supported the intervention's acceptability. Enrollment rate was very low (1.88%). No between-group differences occurred in any of the measured variables. Manuscript 3 examined qualitative data from semi-structured interviews conducted with a sub-sample of 10 HS students. Interviews explored adolescents' perceptions of their experiences with the TLC and the degree that the environment was autonomy-supportive. Recorded interviews were transcribed, and two independent reviewers coded the data. Findings showed that these concepts (BPNs and environmental variables) are important and help support autonomous motivation for PA. In summary, this study, guided by the Self-Determination Theory (SDT) established that adolescent autonomous motivation for PA may contribute to increase PA in rural HS students and that the TLC intervention was acceptable, and feasible.
