Book Synopsis Ices in the Solar System by : J. Klinger

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Audouin Dollfus Observatoire de Paris, Section de Meudon, 92195 Meudon, FRfu~CE The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and, in particular, its Department of Scientific Affairs headed by Dr. C. Sinclair, actively supports new fields of science. The recent exploration of the outer parts of the Solar System by spacecraft focused the attention of a large community of scientists on the problem of ices, which playa major role in the accretionary processes in space except for the close neighborhood of the Sun and of other stars. NATO responded to this new interest by agreeing to sponsor an Advanced Research Workshop "Ices in the Solar System", provided a proper organizing body could be set up. It was a pleasure to organize such a workshop jointly with Profes sor Roman Smoluchowski who had earlier organized similar conferences. I knew from the experience of others who managed such meetings in the past that there would be much work, but the opportunity of cooperating with Smoluchowski was very attractive and convinced me to agree. If well organized, the whole project promised to be more than rewarding for a large community of scientists, both in the short run and in the long run, by clarifying certain outstanding questions in astrophysics. It became clear that a well-organized international conference would attract top scientists and help unravel many fundamental problems.

Book Synopsis Kantian Conceptual Geography by : Nathaniel Jason Goldberg
Download or read book Kantian Conceptual Geography written by Nathaniel Jason Goldberg and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a work in Kantian conceptual geography. It explores issues in analytic epistemology, philosophy of language, and metaphysics in particular by appealing to theses drawn from Immanuel Kant's Critique of Pure Reason. Those issues include the nature of the subjective, objective, and empirical; potential scopes of the subjective; what can (and cannot) be said about a subject-independent reality; analyticity, syntheticity, apriority, and aposteriority; constitutive principles, acquisitive principles, and empirical claims; meaning, indeterminacy, and incommensurability; logically possible versus subjectively empirical worlds; and the nature of empirical truth. Part One introduces two theses drawn from the Critique. The first, Empirical Dualism, concerns the subjective, objective, and empirical. The second, Subjective Principlism, concerns principles that might bear on the empirical. Part Two examines work of influential analytic philosophers to reveal how conceptually expansive the territory formed by Empirical Dualism and Subjective Principlism is. Part Three defends that territory by defending Empirical Dualism and Subjective Principlism themselves. Part Four discloses two new lands within the territory that have so far remained uncharted. The first is a Kantian account of meaning, which is shown to be superior to other accounts of meaning in the analytic literature. The second are Kantian thoughts on truth, which illuminate the nature of empirical truth itself. Finally Part Five shows how engaging in Kantian conceptual geography enriches epistemology, philosophy of language, and metaphysics generally.

Book Synopsis Aristotle: Topics Book VI by : Annamaria Schiaparelli
Download or read book Aristotle: Topics Book VI written by Annamaria Schiaparelli and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-01-25 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a new translation of Aristotle's Topics Book VI by Annamaria Schiaparelli, accompanied by a detailed commentary and textual notes providing insight into the history of the transmission of the text with its variants. In the Topics, Aristotle aims at developing his dialectical method. He introduces the four predicables (property, genus, accident, and definition) which are necessary for the classification and application of the topoi, or commonplaces. Book VI of the Topics is entirely devoted to the discussion of definition, the most extended and refined discussion of this subject handed down to us from the classical period. The concept of definition plays a central role not only in Aristotle's logic but also in his ontology. Issues connected with definitions emerge constantly throughout his works. Moreover, definitions are at the centre of Platonic philosophy and sparked a lively discussion in philosophy of the Hellenistic and late classical periods.

Download or read book Astrolabe written by Geoffrey Chaucer and published by Bbookss. This book was released on 2024-01-19 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is an Astrolabe ? To answer this question in simple language was Geoffrey Chaucer's (astronomer-poet) chief object. He wrote his "Treatise on the Astrolabe" in 1387 for little Lewis, his lo-years- old son, to learn at Oxford. Manuscript copies of this work of Chaucer approaching completeness are very few in number and inaccessible to the general reader. He undoubtedly obtained the greater part of his book from Latin version of the Compositio et Operatio Astrolabii of Messahalla, an Arabian astronomer who is thought to have flourished about the end of the eighth century. Chaucer certainly was of opinion that he had achieved simplicity in his explanations, for he gave his Treatise the title of "Bread and Milk for Children." No one understood better than the great poet that words alone would not suffice to make his meaning clear. He directed his son to read the book with a real Astrolabe in hand. To make the description easier to comprehend, he illustrated every chapter with a neatly drawn diagram, specially drawn to explain each successive proposition, as in Euclid. Fifty-seven paragraphs conclude with the instruction, ' For more declaracioun, lo here the figure', and as many as sixty-two explanatory figures may occur in the more complete manuscripts, as in the fine manuscript in the Cambridge University Library known as Dd. 3. 53. In many of its forms the Astrolabe to be one of the most valuable of educational instruments and contains material for an education from the nursery to the University.
