Book excerpt: The conjunction of the pressures arising from the expansion in student numbers, innovations in teaching and learning, and intense market competition between universities, have changed the landscape of higher education. The context for undergraduate students commencing university has been changed with increased choice and flexibility in course design and modes of delivery, and the introduction of a range of institutional strategies to improve transition from school to university. The results reported in this study provide the basis for reflecting on developments and initiatives over the last five years aimed at improving the first year experience in Australian higher education. The data now provide an exceptionally strong basis for monitoring major changes in the student experience in the future. For the first time there is baseline data on the impact of new approaches to teaching and learning on the student experience, and on the changing nature of the relationship between students and universities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Universities, like other industries, are challenged by disruptive market forces. Today there are nearly forty public universities in Australia. Some predict that by 2070 there may be only ten institutions left globally to deliver higher education. Relentless inventiveness and entrepreneurial agendas promise students a world of unbounded study options. In this powerful meditation on the need for institutional diversity, Glyn Davis argues that experimentation, innovation and resilience are the only way the public university will endure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the university to the 'normal' student? Is it an ivory tower, a community of scholars, the place of a liberal education? The original research incorporated in this book challenges many of the comfortable myths about tertiary education. Dr. Little conducted exhaustive interviews with 120 third-year students. He asked them why they came to university, what their parents' attitude was, whether they had non-university friends, what they expected of their lectures, whether they enjoyed their studies. Here, in their own words, are the answers. Three academic years have surprisingly little effect on the average student. He is not involved with radical or conservative student fringes. His family and friends have more impact than the academic staff. He has little informal or personal contact with his lectures and rarely wants more. He spends little time in extra-curricular activities at the university and seldom works beyond the syllabus. The university remains a static backdrop to a personal development which is a different kind for humanities and science students. This is a constructive and disturbing book.

Book excerpt: More and more students in the world now decide to undertake their university studies in another country to their own. They see advantages of quality, value and experience in studying abroad and rightly see the experience as a preparation for life and a big plus for their CVs in an increasingly inter-connected world and job market. The world language is now undisputedly English and even universities in non-English speaking countries such as Holland and Denmark, universities that are wanting to attract international students, are switching to teaching university programmes in English. This makes for an unparalleled opportunity for UK students these days, just at a time when UK university fees are increasing significantly. This guide gives an overview of the opportunities available to UK students across the world, from the English speaking counties of the USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, to Asia (India, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore), to offers nearer home, in Europe. As well as information on what is available - the education systems and academic cultures and demands of the different destination countries are explained, application procedures and information on living (accommodation, food, entertainment) are provided and there are self-development exercises that will help with the process of cultural readjustment that you as a UK student are likely to undergo and need to understand. The book covers information for both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and recommends ideal destination countries for these. Tips and advice on how to avoid certain pitfalls while being an international student living abroad are provided.
