Book excerpt: Geoffrey Firmin, a former British consul, has come to Quauhnahuac, Mexico. His debilitating malaise is drinking, an activity that has overshadowed his life. On the most fateful day of the consul's life--the Day of the Dead, 1938--his wife, Yvonne, arrives in Quauhnahuac, inspired by a vision of life together away from Mexico and the circumstances that have driven their relationship to the brink of collapse. She is determined to rescue Firmin and their failing marriage, but her mission is further complicated by the presence of Hugh, the consul's half brother, and Jacques, a childhood friend. The events of this one significant day unfold against an unforgettable backdrop of a Mexico at once magical and diabolical. Under the Volcano remains one of literature's most powerful and lyrical statements on the human condition, and a brilliant portrayal of one man's constant struggle against the elemental forces that threaten to destroy him.

Published first in 1947, it is a brilliant, moving, and complex novel, perhaps the last fictional masterpiece to emerge from the modernist movement. As the years went by, Lowry's obsessive rewriting took him further and further into his book, which changed relatively little in the outer semblance of action and main characters but became utterly transformed in texture from the thin and mediocre version of 1940 to the rich tapestry of 1947. The numerous manuscripts allow a look at the processes by which Lowry created not only his masterwork but also his own reputation as a modernist genius. This study offers an extended examination of individual drafts as the novel slowly developed and, in a final chapter, an appraisal of the implications of Lowry's revisions for the book as published, an appraisal that suggests bases for new readings of Under the Volcano.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An item-by-item discussion of the innumerable, often obscure details of Malcolm Lowry's novel, this book comprises 1,600 notes covering some 7,000 specific points. The notes are keyed to page numbers in the Penguin paperback and the two standard hardback editions. The appendices include a glossary, bibliography, maps of the region, and an index of motifs. In their comprehensive but unpedantic commentary on the novel's complexities, the authors' emphasis is on the narrative level. All points of obscurity are followed by an interpretation of fact. Thus references are noted to films, books, places, foreign languages, and national and tribal histories. Special attention is given to the literary, mystical, and Mexican background.

The Alexandria Quartet is a striking and sensuous masterpiece, breathing vivid life into each of its unforgettable characters and the dusty Mediterranean city in which they live. Set in Alexandria, Egypt, in the years before, during, and after World War II, the books follow the lives of a circle of friends and lovers, including sensitive Darley, passionate Justine, philosophical Balthazar, and elegant Clea. Written in Durrell’s trademark evocative prose, these four novels explore the central theme of modern love, building into a remarkable whole that the New York Times hailed as “one of the most important works of our time.” This ebook features a new introduction by Jan Morris.

Book excerpt: Malcolm Lowry was the troubled author of Under the Volcano (1947), a brilliant novel about the last day of an alcoholic former British consul on the Mexican Day of the Dead, the manuscript of which Lowry rescued from the flames when his fisherman's shack burned down in 1944. Lowry's other books were not always so lucky: his first novel, Ultramarine (1930), was stolen after four years' composition and resurrected from a carbon copy; another manuscript, In Ballast to the White Sea, was destroyed in the 1944 fire. An early draft of In Ballast was discovered this century and published in 2014. Lowry's life, like his work, was often lost to chaos; Gordon Bowker's 1994 biography is a masterful account of a life spent adrift.

Book excerpt: Under the Volcanois a popular history written by a master storyteller. It explores the island of Bali in a way that will enthral both lovers of history and curious visitors. Bali has been a dream of paradise for many travellers. Nehru said, "This is the last paradise . . . This is the morning of the world." Yet it has also seen much bloodshed - from the ritual suicides of Balinese warriors to the recent Islamist bombing of the Sari Club. In Under the Volcano, Cameron Forbes looks at the blood and the beauty of Bali, through interviews, legends, reporting and history. He tells the stories of surfers, jihadists and drug-runners, and traces the rich religious and cultural fabric of Balinese life. In so doing, he brings the story of the island paradise up to date.

Book excerpt: Kalapana, which lies downslope from Kilauea, the most active Hawaiian volcano, is significant as one of the few Hawaiian communities that persisted on the land into the twentieth century. Encroaching lava flows forced The Kalapana community to move away in the 1980s. This oral history shares the memories of people who grew up in Kalapana in the 1920s and 1930s, much of it in their own words. It fills a major gap in the history and anthropology of Hawaiian culture. With the twentieth century, Hawaiians and Hawaiian culture tend to disappear from the written histories of Hawaii, seemingly less important than the burgeoning plantation economy and the prospering white and Asian immigrant groups. For their part, anthropologists did not do fieldwork to describe Hawaiian communities until the last half of the twentieth century. Earlier anthropological work was aimed at recording surviving traditional lore, rather than describing living Hawaiian communities. After a section describing the nineteenth century history of Kalapana, the study focuses on the 1920s and 1930s, based on the memories of elders who grew up during that time. Despite conversion to Christianity and political integration into the United States, Kalapana life remained distinctively Hawaiian, including traditional methods of fishing and farming, family life, Hawaiian language, and belief in Hawaiian spirits. A later section brings the history of Kalapana up to the present, including the 1986-1990 lava flow that covered most of the villages and dispersed the Hawaiian community, and subsequent moves toward community renewal.

Book excerpt: This intimate memoir of the tempestuous marriage between Jan Gabrial, a young, aspiring American writer, and British novelist Malcolm Lowry takes us through the highs and lows of this passionate, troubled relationship. Lowry began writing his best-known work, Under the Volcano, during their marriage, while the two were living in Mexico. He based the character of Yvonne on his wife. Now, for the first time, Jan Gabrial tells the true story of their lives during those heady years, and provides a compelling portrait of a troubled artist, a bright and independent young woman, their deep love and bitter struggles, and her positive role in the creation of his work.
