Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under the Red Blanket By: Stan Briney In reality, Dead Men very often do tell their stories. This axiom holds true within the pages of this fast moving, explicitly graphic, fictional crime story. Its modern-day plot is in the city of Austin, Texas and its surrounding well-known Texas Hill Country. Just after their arrival on Grand Cayman Island, West Indies for their long-awaited honeymoon, Brock Hamilton M. D. and wife, Marcie are disquieted when learning that Brock has been subject to a recent and extensive cryptic background investigation that was spearheaded by an International Mafia Syndicate that now has their own plans for the young and newly certified Clinical Pathologist and Medical Examiner. Meanwhile in Austin, Texas, the 20-year career in the U. S. Marine Corps has only galvanized the strong-arm tactics of the always arrogant and pompous Frank Vitrano, now a Travis County Precinct Commissioner. Vitrano soon becomes an enigma to Dr. Hamilton. When T. J. Merwin, the recalcitrant teenage son of Frank’s second wife, becomes a prominent gang member of the Texas Tango Blast organization and later an accomplice and fugitive following a twin homicide and botched burial of two members of a Chicago Mafia crime family, Vitrano implores Brock’s immediate assistance. Since T. J.’s childhood, his relationship with Frank was always contemptuous at best, so years later when they are now opposing each other by their association in two of Texas’s most dangerous gangs, their relationship becomes more heated and threatening. To assist law enforcement in locating Merwin, Hamilton has a very risky plan which he shares with Austin City Police, the Travis County Sheriff’s Department, and the Texas State Rangers. However, for his plan to work, he calls on a brilliant and talented Chinese friend and forensic technician, Huang Liu. The rapid growing suspense finally peaks with a stunning and fatal event in broad daylight on a shabby, tree-lined residential street in the historic East Cesar Chaves neighborhood of Austin. Soon after, Commissioner Frank Vitrano becomes the hunted man. Dead Men eventually tell their own stories!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A #1 Sunday Times bestseller [UK] A titanic battle is being waged for Europe's integrity and soul, with the forces of reason and humanism losing out to growing irrationality, authoritarianism, and malice, promoting inequality and austerity. The whole world has a stake in a victory for rationality, liberty, democracy, and humanism. In January 2015, Yanis Varoufakis, an economics professor teaching in Austin, Texas, was elected to the Greek parliament with more votes than any other member of parliament. He was appointed finance minister and, in the whirlwind five months that followed, everything he had warned about-the perils of the euro's faulty design, the European Union's shortsighted austerity policies, financialized crony capitalism, American complicity and rising authoritarianism-was confirmed as the "troika" (the European Central Bank, International Monetary Fund, and European Commission) stonewalled his efforts to resolve Greece's economic crisis. Here, Varoufakis delivers a fresh look at the history of Europe's crisis and America's central role in it. He presents the ultimate case against austerity, proposing concrete policies for Europe that are necessary to address its crisis and avert contagion to America, China, and the rest of the world. With passionate, informative, and at times humorous prose, he warns that the implosion of an admittedly crisis-ridden and deeply irrational European monetary union should, and can, be avoided at all cost.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is 1980 and American literati are trying to decide how to rank Faulkner, Hemingway, and Lanning. The first two are dead and Lanning is coming on strong, but Arthur Lanning is bad mannered in his arrogance and his insulation from his reading public. He claims to have been born in Richmond, but the newspapers research the claim and find nothing. Suddenly he commits suicide above his isolated Sanctuary home in Idaho, and young Professor Zack Thohus is chosen to write his official biography. Thohus is a conscious Lanningphile; he frankly ranks Lanning ahead of Hemmingway. He is wondering, 6 months after the death, how he will be received at Sanctuary. He finds that it is solidly anti-Arthur. Beloved Ruth reveals her fifteen year marriage has never been consummated and, an early orphan, children had been her fondest hope. Siley Alcott, the general factotum, agrees with friend Ruth in every way. None of Arthurs early promises to her have been fulfilled. Zack, feeling himself a psychologic twin of Arthurs and something of a look-alike, is, of course, the central character. He knows something of the history of his own illegitimacy, and he has some of the same feelings Ruth has: a rich hunger for love, a thwarted parental need. He is falling in love with Ruth. Ruths gynecologist thinks she may have two or three opportunities to become pregnant, and Ruths body temperature chart indicates she is starting ovulation. This is the second them of the novel: love is all there is of good sex, but sex is not all of love. Good sex is shared sex. (Divided sex: one for you, one for me, is not shared sex. Shared sex is this and we for us.) Rape is another planet: hate. Well, if you are with me, the book ought to make it plain. Zack finds out that Arthur was a bloody bastard who didnt write all of the good books. And Ruth gets pregnant three times and the first one has hair in silver curls like Zack, and all of them are theirs. In my books, the good guys with every time. Its the way my world is run. Amen.

Book excerpt: A representative selection from one of India's leading fiction writers The most versatile writer in Malayalam today, M.T. Vasudevan Nair has published short stories, novels, screenplays, as well as articles on the state of literature and cinema in India. At the heart of this collection is The Demon Seed, a fresh translation of Asuravithu, arguably one of his best novels. Published in Malayalam in 1962, it is an uncompromising look at the crumbling matrilineal order, and the breakdown of the joint family system. The novel tells the story of Govindankutty, a young unemployed Nair boy. When his wealthy brother-in-law takes him on as the manager of his property, and a marriage is arranged for him, Govindankutty dares to dream for the first time in his life. He brings his bride home, eager to start life afresh, but discovers to his horror that she is already pregnant by another man-his urbane lawyer-cousin Krishnettan. Shattered by the knowledge that his family had connived to betray him, Govindankutty goes berserk. Finally, estranged from home and village, he converts to Islam in the ultimate gesture of defiance. Tautly written and brilliantly characterized, The Demon Seed is a powerful novel about a society in transition. The collection also brings together six of MT's best stories, including 'Vanaprastham', The Jackal's Wedding' and 'Sherlock'. Also included are 'The Era of Ramanan', an essay on the impact of the first modem verse romance in Malayalam, and a beautifully crafted piece on contemporary cinema. Taken together, these writings are testimony to the remarkable range and depth of M.T. Vasudevan Nair's work.
