Crime already proliferated in the capital of the Empire State, with rival political machines stooping to corruption and the mob with their heavy-handed powers of persuasion. As it did nationwide, Prohibition in Albany served merely to force alcohol-related commerce underground and lawlessness and violence to the forefront of city activity.

Book excerpt: The Hudson River and lush forests frame Albany, while its dynamic political scene contrasts with a nostalgic charm as authentically American as apple pie. New York City may be the Big Apple, but “Smallbany” tempts with apple picking, warm cider donuts, and the adult-only flavors of farm cideries. 100 Things to Do in Albany Before You Die reveals the beauty, excitement, and surprises of New York’s Capital City. Ever seen a building that defies description? Meet the Egg, Albany’s architectural wonder. Walk amidst giants at the Empire State Plaza, where one of the country’s tallest buildings reaches for the skies. And within its confines, find an art collection so stunning it belongs in a museum. In a city infamous for the Capitol building’s haunted Million Dollar staircase, there’s also the colossal presence of the largest Walmart Supercenter in the US and the world’s largest indoor roller-skating rink. And yet, the immense is offset by the enchantment of mini hot dog stands, thrilling water ski shows, and retro drive-in movie theaters. Penned by local travel writer Sandra Foyt, this book isn’t just for tourists. Both new visitors and longtime residents will find a bucket list jampacked with insider tips, covering well-trodden paths and the delightfully obscure.

Book excerpt: Wise beyond her years and hip to the unpredictable ways of life at all too early an age, A.J. Albany guides us through dope and deviance of the late 1960s and early 1970s in Hollywood shadowy underbelly and beyond. A. J. Albany's recollection of life with her father, the great jazz pianist Joe Albany, is the story of one girl's unsentimental education. Joe played with the likes of Charles Mingus, Lester Young, and Charlie Parker, but between gigs he slipped into drug-induced obscurity. It was during these times that his daughter knew him best. After her mother disappeared, six-year-old Amy Jo and her charming, troubled father set up housekeeping in a seamy Hollywood hotel. While Joe finished a set in some red-boothed dive, chances were you'd find Amy curled up to sleep on someone's fur coat, clutching a 78 of Louis Armstrong's "Sugar Blues" or, later, a photograph of the man himself, inscribed, "To little Amy Jo, always in love with you--Pops." Wise beyond her years and hip to the unpredictable ways of Old Lady Life at all too early an age, A. J. Albany guides us through the dope and deviance of the late 1960s and early 1970s in Hollywood's shadowy underbelly and beyond. What emerges is a raw, gripping, and surprisingly sympathetic portrait of a young girl trying to survive among the outcasts, misfits, and artists who surrounded her.

Book excerpt: An unbelievable series of events led to the establishment of the Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory, later the U.S. Bureau of Mines Albany Research Center. Though the fledgling lab had difficulty securing staff due to World War II, world-renown metallurgist William J. Kroll was hired early on as a consultant after fleeing Nazi occupation. Kroll, who had pioneered a method for producing commercial titanium, worked with his core group of associates to develop malleable zirconium, just as a need arose for the little-known metal. On the other side of the country, the petulant and abrasive Captain Rickover was working with his Naval Reactors Group to develop the world's first nuclear submarine, the U.S.S. Nautilus, under the cover of extreme secrecy. But as engineers worked night and day to create a suitable form of propulsion, one problem after another cropped up. New metals were needed for the hellish nuclear environment within a reactor-metals that had never been produced in vast quantities. Enter Kroll's titanium, and its sister metal, hafnium. The two entwined metals, once freed from each other, were exactly what Rickover was looking for.Would the little laboratory in rural Albany, Oregon, be able to produce enough zirconium and hafnium for Rickover's ambitious project? Delve into the establishment and early years of the U.S. Bureau of Mines in Albany, Oregon, and the incredible series of events during the period of 1940-1956.

Wells presents an exhaustive survey of recently discovered census data covering 21 American colonies between 1623 and 1775. He thus provides the first full-scale determination of basic demographic patterns in all parts of England's empire in America before 1776. Following an examination of the adequacy of the censuses, the author describes the population patterns of each colony for which a census is available. He presents information on size and growth of population; race, age, and sex composition; degree of freedom; household size and composition; marital status; military manpower; and birth and death rates. He concludes by describing important variations in demographic patterns from one part of the empire to another and the possible significance of those differences. Originally published in 1975. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines ways in which formerly prosperous regions can renew their economy during and after a period of industrial and economic recession. Using New York’s Capital Region (i.e., Albany, Troy, Schenectady, etc.) as a case study, the authors show how entrepreneurship, innovation, investment in education, research and political collaboration are critical to achieving regional success. In this way, the book provides other regions and nations with a real-life model for successful economic development. In the past half century, the United States and other nations have seen an economic decline of formerly prosperous regions as a result of new technology and globalization. One of the hardest-hit United States regions is Upstate New York or “the Capital Region”; it experienced a demoralizing hemorrhage of manufacturing companies, jobs and people to other regions and countries. To combat this, the region, with the help of state leaders, mounted a decades-long effort to renew and restore the region’s economy with a particular focus on nanotechnology. As a result, New York’s Capital Region successfully added thousands of well-paying, skill-intensive manufacturing jobs. New York’s success story serves as a model for economic development for policy makers that includes major public investments in educational institutions and research infrastructure; partnerships between academia, industry and government; and creation of frameworks for intra-regional collaboration by business, government, and academic actors. Featuring recommendations for best practices in regional development policy, this book is appropriate for scholars, students, researchers and policy makers in regional development, innovation, R&D policy, economic development and economic growth.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The word "pietism" usually conjures up a host of ambivalent im pressions. It has seemed to me increasingly clear that many of the strengths of pietism have been swept aside by reactions against the excesses of the movement. To properly assess the structures of pietism, it is important to comprehend its matrix and to understand its ex ponents. In preparing this study, therefore, I have sought to recapture something of the person of Theodorus Jacobus Frelinghuysen as well as the gist of his thought; something of his environment as well as the institutions of his day. To achieve this I have traveled many by-paths and knocked on many doors. But the past has not always yielded its secrets; much is lost forever. Hagen in Westphalia, Frelinghuysen's birthplace, is now a modern city and only in a few isolated particulars is it reminiscent of Hagen in 1693. In the nearby village of Schwerte, however, the ancestral church of his forebears remains as it was nearly three hundred years ago. The gymnasium he attended in Hamm was destroyed in the bombings ofW orld War II, though the library he used during his study at Lingen is still largely intact. In the tiny East-Frisian village of Loegumer Voorwerk, Frelinghuysen's first parish, one can still stand in the pulpit where he first preached his awakening gospel. Yet oddly enough, in America, where his name is most remembered, most physical traces of his life have disappeared.
