Book Synopsis International Economic Law with a Human Face by : Friedl Weiss
Download or read book International Economic Law with a Human Face written by Friedl Weiss and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-12-18 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Economic Law with a Human Face addresses a vital question in contemporary international economies: the design, structure and content of the legal and institutional framework within an increasingly globalized civil society and market economy. It is based on the belief that liberalized global markets cannot be expected to provide the public goods required to secure the acquis communautaire for human rights worldwide, let alone to extend those rights to peoples hitherto deprived of their benefits. Scholars from Europe, America, Asia and Australia examine a variety of aspects of relevant state practice in a fresh and stimulating manner. They combine `international social critique' of state practice with ideas for `social engineering', offering critical legal analysis and ideas about policy options for setting standards to induce legal change and development. International Economic Law with a Human Face is a `user-friendly' book. Twenty-seven chapters are sub-titled and arranged under three main headings: Towards a new human and economic order (chapters 1-8); Trade, environmental protection and resource management (chapters 9-18); and Investment and finance (chapters 19-27). It also contains a detailed Table of Contents and an Index.

Book Synopsis Industrial Development In Singapore, Taiwan, & South Korea by : Leung-chuen Chau
Download or read book Industrial Development In Singapore, Taiwan, & South Korea written by Leung-chuen Chau and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2001-09-04 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic analysis of the industrial experiences of the newly industrialized economies in Asia is generally lacking in the literature. This study attempts to fill that void by providing an in-depth discussion on the economic impact of the industrial policies of Singapore, Taiwan, and South Korea in the three-and-a-half decades after 1960.Throughout the study, a broad perspective of macroeconomic development is maintained. It is highly critical of the narrow-minded objective of certain governments in maximizing the pace of industrialization at the expense of general economic well-being.A comparative analysis of the industrial experiences of the three economies also shows a diversity of constraints and processes. Singapore relied on multinational corporations, Taiwan on returned engineers, and South Korea on chaebols. There appears to be no Asian formula for industrialization. In Hong Kong, there is an ongoing debate on whether some form of industrial policy should be introduced, in view of the perception that Hong Kong is lagging behind the other economies in terms of technology. Drawing on the experiences of the other economies, the concluding chapter of the book provides an informed and balanced answer to this question.

Book Synopsis Law and Practice of International Arbitration in the CIS Region by : Kaj Hober
Download or read book Law and Practice of International Arbitration in the CIS Region written by Kaj Hober and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2016-04-24 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The former Soviet republics of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) generate a significant and growing amount of work for the major Western and CIS regional international arbitral institutions. This book, a country-by-country analysis of regulation and practice of international arbitration in ten CIS jurisdictions, offers the first comprehensive review of commercial arbitration in the region. It also analyses notable developments in the use of arbitration mechanisms contained in bilateral and multilateral investment treaties affecting the region. The book provides not only a detailed analysis of the law, but also insight from local practitioners into the culture of arbitration and how the law is applied in each jurisdiction. Jurisdictions covered include Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan. In addition to detailed discussion of the particular features of arbitral practice in each jurisdiction, contributions cover the following issues and topics: • arbitrability of disputes and public policy; • arbitral procedure; • recognition and enforcement of commercial and investor-state arbitration awards; • implementation of the UNCITRAL Model Law and other instruments affecting arbitral practice and procedure; • statistics from key arbitration institutions; • adherence to the ICSID, New York and key regional conventions relevant to arbitration; • relevant regulations, cases as well as applicable bilateral investment treaties; • law and practice related to investor-state arbitration; and • role of the Court of the Eurasian Economic Union. An informative introductory chapter provides detailed discussion and analysis of historic and current trends affecting arbitration practice among the CIS countries, including the role of regional conventions relatively unknown in the West. As a comprehensive overview of international arbitration in this burgeoning region, this book has no peers. It is sure to be highly valued and used by lawyers, arbitrators, and academics concerned with alternative dispute resolution, as well as by arbitration institutions, companies, states, and individuals engaged in arbitration.
