Book Synopsis The Legal Framework for International Economic Relations by : Paul J. Davidson
Download or read book The Legal Framework for International Economic Relations written by Paul J. Davidson and published by Institute of Southeast Asian. This book was released on 1997 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International economic law on the one hand and national economic laws and policies on the other, form the borderlines of the "playing ground" within which the design for closer economic cooperation can be drawn. Before anything can be done, it is of utmost importance to know and study these "borderlines". This book is an attempt to set out the "borderlines" not only for intra-ASEAN economic co-operation but also for economic cooperation between that region and Canada by considering the legal framework for international economic relations within ASEAN and between ASEAN and Canada.

Book Synopsis Preserving Power Through Coalitions by : Maria Sampanis
Download or read book Preserving Power Through Coalitions written by Maria Sampanis and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2003-11-30 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sampanis argues that the United States uses agricultural trade liberalization as a bonding issue with middle and weak countries, that the US then uses this relationship to improve its bargaining position with its challengers, that the US uses this relationship to enhance its competitiveness vis-a-vis its challengers, and that the US also uses this relationship to improve its access into middle and weak countries. Sampanis also shows that Britain before it also used negotiated arrangements with weaker states to gain bargaining power and improve competitiveness with challengers. What do you do if-after years of doing what you want, getting others to do what you want, and essentially calling the shots-you can no longer simply do what you wish, convince others to do as you prefer, and dictate agendas? Sampanis examines through the lens of agricultural policy this dilemma faced by hegemons in decline, those once preeminent states whose dominance is gradually eroded by the very successes they encouraged. As a self-preservation measure the United States-and Great Britain before it-negotiated arrangements with weaker states to gain bargaining power with challengers. Forming a coalition with those previously ignored, these declining hegemons maneuvered survival. Britain transformed its empire into a commonwealth; it used trade incentives to curry continued allegiance. In a significant policy shift, the United States seeks common ground with middle and weak states to rejuvenate its economic competitiveness in those economies as well as in those of its developed competitors. The tactice worked better for the United States, since a coalition of numbers translates into a coalition of votes in the institutional frameworks its hegemonic leadership fosters. As Sampanis shows, for both the United States and Great Britain, the prize has been an extended lease on influence.

It now represents one-third or more of the yearly legal inflow in the United States and half in Europe. At the global level some US$7 billion is channelled every year into human trafficking. Its close interlocking with trafficking in arms and drugs, as well as with prostitution of women and child abuse, makes it an increasingly alarming menace.

Book Synopsis Globalisation by : Daniel A. Offiong
Download or read book Globalisation written by Daniel A. Offiong and published by Fourth Dimension Publishing Company. This book was released on 2001 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the 1980s, incomes, living standards and investments in Africa plummeted, while poverty declined in South and East Asia. With world attention now focused on global issues, not least damaging effects in Africa, this timely book argues that structural adjustment programmes in Africa, enforced by the international financial institutions, have produced a tighter dependency than colonialism achieved. The opening up of Eastern Europe, and even more profitable business in Asia has even further marginalised Africa. This study examines paradigms relevant to wealth and poverty among nations. The modernisation paradigm is the cornerstone of the US and Western alliance foreign policy towards Africa; its ethnocentric claims, and the work of Walt Rostow are studied. Africa contribution to its own poverty is scrutinised, and the need demonstrated for lifting the millstone of debt burden.
