Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication provides a description of existing and emerging technologies to effectively integrate geological, geophysical and geochemical data to recognize the footprint (i.e. the total extent that the mineralizing system has affected its environment) of the deposit and the key vectors to the uranium mineralization. In addition, insights into exploration strategies and risks associated with country and basin selection are discussed, including the role of the IAEA and academia in supporting the exploration process. Representing an unprecedented, comprehensive reference document on unconformity-related uranium deposits with over 350 citations, this publication will be useful for decision makers at all levels, including governmental officers in energy and mineral resources, exploration companies, geologists, geological surveys, energy companies, universities and research institutions, and natural resource authorities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important prerequisite to the long-term use of nuclear energy is information on uranium ore deposits from which uranium can be economically exploited. Hence the basic purpose of this book is to present an overview of uranium geology, data characteristic for uranium deposits, and a synthesis of these data in the form of a typological classification of uranium deposits supported by more detailed descriptions of selected uranium districts and deposits. An additional goal is to provide access for the interested reader to the voluminous literature on uranium geology. Therefore a register of bibliography as global as possible, extending beyond the immediate need for this book, is provided. The volume presented here was not originally designed as a product for its own sake. It evolved as a by-product during decades of active uranium exploration and was compiled thanks to a request by the Springer Publishing Company. Routine research work on identifying characteristic features and recognition criteria of uranium deposits, combined with associated modeling of types of deposits for reapplication in exploration, provided the data bank. The publisher originally asked for a book on uranium deposits structured as a combined text- and reference book. The efforts to condense all the text into a single publication were soon doomed. The material grew out of all feasible proportions for a book of acceptable size and price, a wealth of data on uranium geology and related geosciences having become available during the past decade, too vast for one volume.

Book excerpt: Unconformity-related uranium deposits in the Athabasca Basin represent a significant global resource of uranium. One such deposit, the Phoenix Deposit, discovered in 2007 on Denison Mine's Wheeler River property, shares similarities with other deposits in the Basin. The Phoenix Deposit is located at the apex between a basement shear structure, and the unconformity between the crystalline basement and overlying sandstones. The shear structure extends into the sandstones, this structure controls the distribution of alteration minerals in the basement and early alteration phases in sandstones. The shear structure extending to sandstones is not spatially associated with late alteration phases associated with the uranium deposit, suggesting that the structure was not important for uranium mineralisation. Bulk rock compositions of sandstones show chimney-like distribution of elements above the uranium deposit. The most notable ones are the distribution of yttrium, and boron. Rare earth elements and yttrium are not soluble in aqueous fluids at low temperatures and they are enriched in uranium ore. Therefore, the chimney-like distribution of elements are attributed to uraniferous hydrothermal activity in sandstones. Petrographic and chemical analysis of alteration associated with the Phoenix Deposit shows two types of tourmaline, a pre-ore (Tur 1) in the basement, which is likely a metamorphic product (Tur1) and a syn-ore magnesiofoitite (Tur 2) in the basement and the sandstones. Three generations of chlorite are identified within the alteration halo of the Phoenix Deposit; an early Fe-rich clinochlore (C1) in the basement and sandstones, the second generation, Mg-rich sudoitic chlorite (C2) in the basement, and a late, sudoitic chlorite (C3) in the basement and sandstones. Illite shows three types; an early and late M1 and a late M2. M1 is found as two polytypes, 1Mc and 1Mt, in the basement and sandstones, with the 1Mt having a spatial relationship with the uranium deposit. Late M2 illite is coarse-grained and occurs in the basement and sandstones. Near Infrared (NIR) spectra of sandstones overlying the deposit shows absorption features between 600 and 700 nm. It is considered that these absorption features appear to have been produced during late hydrothermal activity and may have a temporal as well as spatial relationship with uranium mineralisation.

Book excerpt: Hawk Rapids is a uranium exploration project located in the southeastern part of the Athabasca Basin, in Saskatchewan, Canada. Geochemical and mineralogical assessments of drill core from Hawk Rapids were used to evaluate the possibility of an unconformity-related uranium deposit occurring within the area. The mineral evolution of this area spans the pre-Athabasca Basin period through diagenesis to post hydrothermal alteration events. Pre-Athabasca alteration is characterized by muscovite and clinochlore while early to late diagenesis is represented by early hematite, quartz overgrowths, dickite and illite. These events were followed by dravite, both in the basement and sandstone units, kaolinite, pyrite, minor coffinite, uraninite, and siderite, which mark the hydrothermal evolution of the area. Post-hydrothermal activity is marked by the late influx of meteoric water, which resulted in formation of late kaolinite. The alteration fluids at Hawk Rapids have three distinct isotopic compositions associated with these stages of evolution. The fluid in equilibrium with pre-Athabasca alteration minerals has an isotopic composition similar to that of modified seawater or low latitude meteoric waters. Basinal brines with a meteoric component characterize the fluid in equilibrium with illite, which represents the diagenetic mineral assemblage. The precipitation of dravite in the hydrothermal stage records a mixture of both basement modified and basinal brines. Radiogenic Pb leached from the drill core samples at Hawk Rapids was derived from both internal and external sources. The breakdown of uranium-rich heavy minerals such as apatite, zircon and monazite make up the internal sources while other uranium-rich sources such as possible proximal uranium deposits constitute external sources. Microbial methane production coupled with methane consumption (microbial methane oxidation) are the major microbial activities associated with unconformity-related uranium at Hawk Rapids. The activities of these microbes are most pronounced near the unconformity where there is secondary dispersion of uranium and associated pathfinder elements that serve as nutrients. This work shows that the integration of both geochemical and mineralogical data is an effective tool in evaluating the prospectivity of an area for possible unconformity-related uranium deposits.

Book excerpt: This book introduces the geological background of sandstone-type uranium deposits in the Ordos Basin, Northwest China. Through comparative study of a large number of practical data such as uranium, coal and oil boreholes, the research system takes sedimentary basin as a unit and fully utilizes geological principles and test analysis to study the basic geological, geophysical, geochemical and remote sensing image characteristics of the basin, and to restores the favorable uranium-forming geological background brought by the change of the cognitive sedimentary environment conditions. It can be used as a reference for researchers, practitioners and as well as teachers and graduate students working in uranium deposit geology, sedimentary geology and related areas
