Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper explains the concepts of fuzzy set theory and applies them to the problem of allocating public forest land on Vancouver Island among competing land uses. Two principal sources of fuzziness are identified: those related to uncertainty in classification (specification of management objectives) and those related to uncertainty concerning how actions affect objectives (imprecise technical coefficients). Comparing the results of classical and fuzzy decision models enables determination of which approach provides improved results, and which is more consistent with the political decision-making process in British Columbia.

Book excerpt: The goal of Kangas, Kangas and Kurttila's Decision Support for Forest Management is to provide students and researchers with a toolbox of methods for approaching the different planning situations that may arise in practice. It draws together a wide range of methods used in planning forest management regimes and presents a systematic overview of current methodological approaches. While earlier books concerning forest planning have tended to focus on linear programming, economic aspects, or specific multi-criteria decision aid tools, this book provides a much broader range of tools to meet a variety of planning situations. The methods themselves cover a range of decision situations – from cases involving single decision makers, through group decision making, to participatory planning. They include traditional decision support tools, from optimization to utility functions, as well as methods that are just gaining ground in forest planning – such as problem structuring methods and social choice theory. Including examples which illustrate the application of each technique to specific management planning problems, the book offers an invaluable resource for both researchers and advanced students specializing in management and planning issues relating to forestry.

This text is one of many on the topic of timber supply, a perpetually central issue in forest economics and policy. But it is also something else: It is an attempt to examine the economic efficiency of investments in timber production. Special attention is directed to the increasingly important issue of investments in forestland, particularly public forestland, where allocation of land between timber production and other forest uses is an issue of national policy importance.

Book excerpt: These are turbulent, unpredictable, yet opportune times for Canadian forestry. Never before have competing demands on Canada’s forest resources been so great. At the same time, we are finally being forced to confront the sustainable limit of these resources. Now, the improbable has happened: government, industry, First Nationa, and NGOs appear to be part of an emerging consensus that industrial forestry in Canada must change. The Wealth of Forests is a pioneering attempt to grapple with the policy implications of the transition to sustainable forestry. While much has been written on the theory and practice of sustainable forestry and on the relative merits of regulatory versus market approaches to environmental protection, these literatures have nnot as yet been bridged. Using illustrations based on recent developments in British Columbia forest policy, this collection provides that bridge by analyzing the potential and limits of market, regulatory, and other policy instruments as means of achieving sustainability. Featuring new work by many of Canada’s leading forest policy scholars, this interdisciplinary collection is devoted to translating the concept of sustainability into practice in key areas of forest policy, including tenure, timber pricing, forest practices, land-use zoning, and eco-certification. The Wealth of Forests also considers how domestic and international legal regimes might constrain the adoption of policies that could bring us close to the elusive goal of sustainable forestry.
