Book excerpt: Integrating Bible stories that stretch across the centuries from each other along with a background of secular history and current events, Unbroken Cord uncovers the link that ties them all together. This book is what many believers have been looking for: an easily understood synthesis between Old and New Testaments, past and present. Combining a tourist's enthusiasm for exploration along with a love for detail and scripture, the author provides information that includes today's news, ancient prophecy, and a good bit of backstory. Each of the twelve chapters is written with the goal of distilling its specific topic into an explanation that makes sense to the average person. Even if the reader lacks background regarding Biblical History or the current geopolitical situation, subjects that have previously seemed overly complicated or fuzzy, begin to fall into place. Since most everyone has fallen through the scholastic cracks at some point, each chapter is presented as an opportunity for some much needed "catch-up" information. The book is a personal tutoring session and survey approach to understanding Israel's place within the context of a modern Christian worldview. It turns out that the Bible is full of mystery. Unbroken Cord unlocks secrets about God's Calendar, fleshes out origins of the Middle East conflict, examines prophecies concerning Israel's future population boom and explores Jerusalem - from her distant past and into the age to come.

Book excerpt: This eclectic play dramatises the desperate nature of man, which propels him to devise fraudulent ways out of difficult situations, an act that results in contentions arising from collision of conflicting forces. Before the climax of the play, a prologue and four preceding parts provide a buildup to the final part, which marks the convergence of the performing arts professionals whose works the play projects. The prologue catalogues pockets of infractions that this world is made of and which have deprived the society of the much-needed peace. In part 1, Old Man, a divine personality, calls three people into being: Alujo, Arinjo, and Awoko, who surprisingly are versatile in the arts of performance. An attempt at fraudulent practices and theft form the conflicts in parts 2 to 4, all of which are resolved by Old Man, but not without strong moral impartations. The final part climaxes as a melting pot of the performing arts as three versatile professionals Alujo, Arinjo, and Awokolock horn in an attempt to win the heart of King Adetokes daughter. However, the kings dishonest intent draws the ire of Old Man whose intervention further strengthens the arts of the performers.

Join the Random House Reader’s Circle for author chats and more. In boyhood, Louis Zamperini was an incorrigible delinquent. As a teenager, he channeled his defiance into running, discovering a prodigious talent that had carried him to the Berlin Olympics. But when World War II began, the athlete became an airman, embarking on a journey that led to a doomed flight on a May afternoon in 1943. When his Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean, against all odds, Zamperini survived, adrift on a foundering life raft. Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humor; brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would be suspended on the fraying wire of his will. Appearing in paperback for the first time—with twenty arresting new photos and an extensive Q&A with the author—Unbroken is an unforgettable testament to the resilience of the human mind, body, and spirit, brought vividly to life by Seabiscuit author Laura Hillenbrand. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Corsica, spelling contests, road signs, bilingual education bills and Corsican language newscasts leave language planners and ordinary speakers deeply divided over how to define what "counts" as Corsican and how it is connected with cultural identity. In Ideologies in Action Alexandra Jaffe explores the complex interrelationship between linguistic ideologies and practices on the French island of Corsica. This detailed exploration of the ideological and political underpinnings of three decades of language planning raises fundamental questions about what it means to "save" a minority language, and the way in which specific cultural, political and ideological contexts shape the "successes" and "failures" of linguistic engineering efforts. Jaffe's ethnography focuses both on the way dominant language ideologies are inscribed in the everyday experience of ordinary people, as well as how they shape the evolving strategies of language planners trying to revitalize the Corsican language. While Jaffe's analysis demonstrates the pervasive influence of dominant language ideologies on minority language speakers and language planners, she also draws on case studies from everyday discourse, educational practice and public and mediatized debates over language issues to develop an ethnographically-grounded perspective on levels of resistance. In the final part of the book she explores the emergence (and the limits) of "radical" genres of resistance found in forms of Corsican language activism and in examples of codeswitching and language mixing in bilingual radio practice. This book contributes to a growing literature on language ideology, and will be of interest to anthropologists, political scientists and linguists interested in the practical and theoretical dimensions of language contact, minority language literacy, bilingual education, and language shift.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transformational wisdom designed for both women and men to access and enhance the inner power of the Divine • Reveals how to activate your sacred sexual self and find your soul mission • Shows how to access the wisdom of the Galactic Center • Explains why men need the Shakti Circuit to connect with the Divine Masculine Shakti is the Divine life force that ceaselessly manifests, creates, and activates. Igniting this living power within is the key for both men and women to transform themselves and attain union, harmony, and peace. The fluid intelligence of Shakti enflames, empowers, and awakens, igniting life force, joy, and organic wisdom within. Uniting the forms of Tantra Yoga found in Indian, Tibetan, and Aramaic sacred traditions, Padma Aon Prakasha reveals how to activate the power of Shakti by opening the 18 energetic pathways of the Shakti Circuit. The Circuit begins with galactic energy entering the body at the Alta Major chakra, located at the back of the head. Traveling down the pillar of the spine through the root chakra, the Circuit passes through the Seven Gates of the Womb-Grail to link the sacred sexual center and the heart center. From the heart, the energy completes the Circuit by traveling to the third eye and back to the Alta Major starting point to reveal the All-seeing eye. Centered on the womb in women and the hara in men, the Shakti Circuit links the soul, body-mind, emotions, and chakras to the power and loving wisdom of the Galactic Center. The Power of Shakti includes the insights and experiences of both men and women as they activate the power of Shakti and shows that clearing all 18 pathways of the Shakti Circuit enables us to activate our sacred sexual self and find our soul mission.
