Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and others—included expanded opportunities for higher education in their Declaration of Sentiments at the first Women's Rights Convention in Seneca Falls, New York, in l848. By then, the first American institutions to educate women had been founded, among them, Mt. Holyoke Seminary, in l837. However, not until after the Civil War did most universities admit women—and not for egalitarian purposes. War casualties had caused a drop in enrollment and the states needed teachers. Women students paid tuition, but, as teachers, were paid salaries half that of men. By the late 20th century, there were more female than male students of higher education, but women remained underrepresented at the higher levels of educational leadership and training. This volume covers everything from historical and cultural context and gender theory to women in the curriculum and as faculty and administrators.

Supportive relationships, like mentors and sponsors, have been shown to both inspire women to pursue those careers and to help them succeed in them. This book explores how developing supportive connections helps students, faculty, and teachers see STEM professions as being a place for women to grow and succeed. Early chapters provide essential mentor characteristics and explore engineering education gender inequity from a teacher's perspective of stereotypes, stereotype threat, and bias, offering culturally relevant teacher mentoring approaches to promote equitable pre-college engineering education. Middle chapters describe K-12 mentoring programs: mentorship initiatives empowering young South African Women and girls to advance to mathematical-related careers; programs, methods and activities to achieve the desired goal of making young students aspire to become scientists; and engagement year-round in grades 9-12 combined with 40 years of iterative evaluation created a finely-honed enrichment program for low-income Black women in urban public high schools. A longitudinal undergraduate mentoring program for mentoring early college students in Louisiana provides further insights in that section. The final four-chapter section describes mentoring programs for professors and teachers: reciprocal mentor relationships and role shifting within an informal peer mentoring group; differences between mentoring relationships and sponsoring relationships within academia; the impact of culturally responsive mentorship (CRM) on the development and expression of a pre-service teacher’s woman of science identity; and a program that aims to recruit and retain STEM pre-service teachers and STEM teachers of color. With several longitudinal mentoring programs, several programs for women of color, this book fills a gap to help grow the numbers of women in STEM.

Book excerpt: Participation in international sporting events has social and cultural meanings beyond the athletic performances produced. Throughout the twentieth century, marginalized groups such as African Americans, women, and people with disabilities have used athletic participation as a way to shape their public images and show positive representations in hopes of changing public perceptions. For these groups, athletic participation has drawn on an assimilationist model that seemed to suggest that marginalized individuals could succeed if only they tried hard enough. In the early 1980s, organizers created the Gay Games, which rejected the assimilationist model adopted by earlier groups to present a visible alternative to mainstream stereotypes about gay men and lesbians. Gay Games organizers hoped to provide an event that would unite the gay and lesbian population, while educating mainstream viewers by providing positive representations to counter prevailing negative imagery. While the first Gay Games succeeded in this goal, the AIDS epidemic prompted a wave of negative representations, particularly of gay men, that were difficult to overcome. Instead, Gay Games organizers offered representations of gay men and women engaged in healthy, wholesome athletic activity as a way of countering images of a disease-riddled population. The response by the gay and lesbian population to the AIDS epidemic also affected mainstream responses, since the creation of an AIDS industry arising from grass roots AIDS Service Organizations ultimately drew lucrative government grants for healthcare and research, attracting the attention of corporate advertisers who recognized the gay and lesbian population as a potential niche market. Corporate advertisements in gay and lesbian publications and corporate sponsorship of the Gay Games led Gay Games organizers to adopt the same assimilationist model that other marginalized groups had utilized. Increasingly, their message indicated that gay men and lesbians could succeed if only they tried hard enough, a narrative that ignored institutional inequities. This study of the Gay Games in comparative perspective to other marginalized groups and their participation in international sporting events is important because it traces the way that a radical social movement became increasingly normalized in mainstream representations once the group in question demonstrated their viability as consumer market. This suggests that the economics of consumption, rather than equality and fairness, are the driving forces behind this normalization process.
