Book Synopsis Challenge For The Actor by : Uta Hagen
Download or read book Challenge For The Actor written by Uta Hagen and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 1991-08-21 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theoretically, the actor ought to be more sound in mind and body than other people, since he learns to understand the psychological problems of human beings when putting his own passions, his loves, fears, and rages to work in the service of the characters he plays. He will learn to face himself, to hide nothing from himself -- and to do so takes an insatiable curiosity about the human condition. from the Prologue Uta Hagen, one of the world's most renowned stage actresses, has also taught acting for more than forty years at the HB Studio in New York. Her first book, Respect for Acting, published in 1973, is still in print and has sold more than 150,000 copies. In her new book, A Challenge for the Actor, she greatly expands her thinking about acting in a work that brings the full flowering of her artistry, both as an actor and as a teacher. She raises the issue of the actor's goals and examines the specifics of the actor's techniques. She goes on to consider the actor's relationship to the physical and psychological senses. There is a brilliantly conceived section on the animation of the body and mind, of listening and talking, and the concept of expectation. But perhaps the most useful sections in this book are the exercises that Uta Hagen has created and elaborated to help the actor learn his craft. The exercises deal with developing the actor's physical destination in a role; making changes in the self serviceable in the creation of a character; recreating physical sensations; bringing the outdoors on stage; finding occupation while waiting; talking to oneself and the audience; and employing historical imagination. The scope and range of Uta Hagen here is extraordinary. Her years of acting and teaching have made her as finely seasoned an artist as the theatre has produced.
Book Synopsis Pedro Calderón de la Barca and the World Theatre in Early Modern Europe by : Rasmus Vangshardt
Download or read book Pedro Calderón de la Barca and the World Theatre in Early Modern Europe written by Rasmus Vangshardt and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-11-20 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rasmus Vangshardt offers an original interpretation of one of the most famous images of literary history, the theatrum mundi. By applying methods of comparative literature, hispanic studies, and theology, he reconsiders the world theatre’s historical peak in early modern Europe in general and the Spanish Golden Age in particular. The author presents a new close reading of Pedro Calderón’s El gran teatro del mundo (c. 1633–36) and outlines the historical and systematic framework for a theatrum mundi of celebration. This concept entails using art to justify human existence in the face of changing conceptions of the cosmos: an early modern aesthetic theodicy and a justification of the world in that liminal space between drama and ritual. By discussing historiographical theories of early modern Europe, especially those of Hans Blumenberg and Bruno Latour, and through conversations with Shakespearean drama and Spanish Golden Age classics, Vangshardt also argues that the theatrum mundi of celebration questions traditional assumptions of great divides between the Middle Ages and Early Modernity and challenges theories of a European-wide early modern sense of crisis.
Book Synopsis Respeto por la interpretación by : Uta Hagen
Download or read book Respeto por la interpretación written by Uta Hagen and published by ALBA Editorial. This book was released on 2019-11-08 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Queer Mexico written by Paul Julian Smith and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the rich and varied LGBT cinema and television of Mexico since the new millennium. Queer Mexico: Cinema and Television since 2000provides critical analysis of both mainstream and independent audiovisual works, many of them little known, produced in Mexico since the turn of the twenty-first century. In the book, author Paul Julian Smith aims to tease out the symbiotic relationship between culture and queerness in Mexico. Smith begins with the year 2000 because of the political shift that happened within the government—the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) was voted out of national office after over seventy years in power. Judicial and social changes for LGBT Mexicans came in the wake of what was known at the time as simply "the change" ("el cambio") at the start of the millennium, bringing about an increased visibility and acknowledgment of the LGBT community. Divided into five chapters, Queer Mexico demonstrates the diversity of both representation and production processes in the Mexican film and television industry. It attempts also to reconstruct a queer cultural field for Mexico that incorporates multiple genres and techniques. The first chapter looks at LGBT festivals, porn production, and a web-distributed youth drama, claimed by its makers to be the first wholly gay series made in Mexico. The second chapter examines selected features and shorts by Mexico's sole internationally distributed art house director, Julián Hernández. The third chapter explores the rising genre of documentary on transgender themes. The fourth chapter charts the growing trend of a gay, lesbian, or trans-focused mainstream cinema. The final chapter addresses the rich and diverse history of queer representation in Mexico's dominant television genre and, arguably, national narrative: the telenovela. The book also includes an extensive interview with gay auteur Julián Hernández. The first book to come out of the Queer Screens series, Queer Mexicois a groundbreaking monograph for anyone interested in media or LGBT studies, especially as it relates to the culture of Latin America.

Book Synopsis Tales of Seduction by : Sarah Wright
Download or read book Tales of Seduction written by Sarah Wright and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2007-10-24 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Don Juan is one of the most intriguing creations of Western literature, a perpetual source of fascination. In the popular imagination he exists as a legendary seducer of women, a trickster and transgressor of sacred boundaries. Crossing cultures from east to west, he has been the recipient of countless revisions, while the twentieth century has viewed the figure afresh through the prism of its own cultural terms of reference and social concerns. Using an interdisciplinary approach, Tales of Seduction focuses on the fascinating intersections between myth, culture and intellectual inquiry. Sarah Wright takes Don Juan back to Spain and examines the confluences of Spanish culture with aspects of Western intellectual history (such as medicine, psychoanalysis and linguistics), where she finds Don Juan continues to transgress the limits of culture until the present.
