Book Synopsis Acoustemologies in Contact by : Emily Wilbourne
Download or read book Acoustemologies in Contact written by Emily Wilbourne and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2021-01-19 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this fascinating collection of essays, an international group of scholars explores the sonic consequences of transcultural contact in the early modern period. They examine how cultural configurations of sound impacted communication, comprehension, and the categorisation of people. Addressing questions of identity, difference, sound, and subjectivity in global early modernity, these authors share the conviction that the body itself is the most intimate of contact zones, and that the culturally contingent systems by which sounds made sense could be foreign to early modern listeners and to present day scholars. Drawing on a global range of archival evidence—from New France and New Spain, to the slave ships of the Middle Passage, to China, Europe, and the Mediterranean court environment—this collection challenges the privileged position of European acoustical practices within the discipline of global-historical musicology. The discussion of Black and non-European experiences demonstrates how the production of ‘the canon’ in the cosmopolitan centres of colonial empires was underpinned by processes of human exploitation and extraction of resources. As such, this text is a timely response to calls within the discipline to decolonise music history and to contextualise the canonical works of the European past. This volume is accessible to a wide and interdisciplinary audience, not only within musicology, but also to those interested in early modern global history, sound studies, race, and slavery.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Tackles novelist Elena Ferrante’s Neapolitan quartet in terms of their ‘creative forms of [female] resistance’ . . . A richly layered study.” —Kirkus Reviews “I greatly admire the work of Tiziana de Rogatis. She is a reader of deep refinement. Often I think that she knows my books better than I. So, I read her with admiration and remain silent.” —Elena Ferrante, in the magazine, San Lian Sheng Huo Zhou Kan Ferrante’s four-volume novel cycle known in English as the Neapolitan quartet has become a global success, with over ten million readers in close to fifty countries. Her readers recount feeling “addicted” to the novels; they describe a pleasure in reading that is as rare as it is irresistible, a compulsion that leads them either to devour the books or to ration them so as to prolong the pleasure. De Rogatis here addresses that same transnational, diverse, transversal audience. Elena Ferrante’s Key Words is conceived as a lighted path made of luminous key words that synthesize the multiform aspects of Ferrante’s writing and guide us through the labyrinth of her global success. “An exceptional companion to the source material, particularly for the lit-crit crowd looking to affirm Ferrante’s reinvention of the future of the novel.” —Library Journal
Download or read book Sweet Fire written by Elizabeth Pallitto and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2006-11-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tullia d'Aragona is one of the most renowned women writers from the Italian Renaissance. Given the title the "courtesan poet," Tullia was loved and desired by many. This collection includes fifty-five of Tullia's best poems and a selection of pieces written to her and about her. Accompanying Tullia's poems is a series of risposte (responsive letters) written by well-known men of her day—including Girolamo Muzio, Benedetto Varchi and Lattanzio Bennucci—who offer poetic tributes to her honor, talent, and wit. In these poetic dialogues, Tullia shows herself a match to her male contemporaries in verbal and intellectual dexterity. In a poem written to Piero Manelli, Tullia argues for a female poet's equal right to fame and literary immortality. In a tribute of gratitude to her muse, friend, and editor—aptly named Muzio—she claims that loving such a talented writer reflects well upon her: "the worth / was yours; but in loving you, the glory mine." Muzio, in turn, writes an introduction to Tullia's dialogue on love, praising the beauty of her mind and the brightness of her soul's "flame," refined by hardship and virtue. The quality of craftsmanship, the originality of thought, and the fiercely proud ambition in these poems set Tullia d'Aragona in a category apart from other women poets of the era. Her wish to be immortalized in print, renowned in her own "eternal lines to time," will be fulfilled through this bilingual edition. Retaining the music of the Italian, these translations bring Tullia's work to life for an English audience.
Book Synopsis Goliarda Sapienza in Context by : Alberica Bazzoni
Download or read book Goliarda Sapienza in Context written by Alberica Bazzoni and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-06-02 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present edited collection of essays on the Sicilian author Goliarda Sapienza includes contributions from established and emerging scholars working in the field of contemporary women’s writing. Essays in this volume examine Sapienza through multiple perspectives, taking into account the articulation of subjectivity through autobiographical writing and the complex representation of gender and sexual identities. Also considered here is Sapienza’s oblique position within the Italian literary canon, with contributions moving beyond isolated textual analyses whilst attempting to situate the author’s works within a framework of intertextual and contextual cultural references. Exploring the fertile network of explicit and implicit intersections with Italian and European literature (English and French in particular), as well as with Western philosophical thought in which Sapienza’s texts are embedded, this volume will provide an overdue contribution to the belated appraisal of an author whose due recognition is, in Cesare Garboli’s words, only a matter of time: “Time will work in favour of Goliarda Sapienza’s works. And this is not a wish; it is a certainty.”
