Book Synopsis Neoliberalism, Interrupted by : Mark Goodale
Download or read book Neoliberalism, Interrupted written by Mark Goodale and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2013-05-29 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1980s and 1990s, neoliberal forms of governance largely dominated Latin American political and social life. Neoliberalism, Interrupted examines the recent and diverse proliferation of responses to neoliberalism's hegemony. In so doing, this vanguard collection of case studies undermines the conventional dichotomies used to understand transformation in this region, such as neoliberalism vs. socialism, right vs. left, indigenous vs. mestizo, and national vs. transnational. Deploying both ethnographic research and more synthetic reflections on meaning, consequence, and possibility, the essays focus on the ways in which a range of unresolved contradictions interconnect various projects for change and resistance to change in Latin America. Useful to students and scholars across disciplines, this groundbreaking volume reorients how sociopolitical change has been understood and practiced in Latin America. It also carries important lessons for other parts of the world with similar histories and structural conditions.

Book Synopsis Travels of the Criminal Question by : Dario Melossi
Download or read book Travels of the Criminal Question written by Dario Melossi and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-02-03 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The expression 'the criminal question' does not at present have much currency in English-language criminology. The term was carried across from Italian debates about the orientation of criminology, and in particular debates about what came to be called critical criminology. One definition offered early in the debate described it as 'an area constituted by actions, institutions, policies and discourses whose boundaries shift'. According to this writer, crime, and the cultural and symbolic significance carried by law and criminal justice, is an integral aspect of the criminal question. 'The criminal question' draws attention to the specific location and constitution of a given field of forces, and the themes, issues, dilemmas and debates that compose it. At the same time it enables connections to be made between these embedded realities and the wider, conceivably global, contours of influence and flows of power with which it connects. This in turn raises many questions. How far do the responses to crime and punishment internationally flow from and owe their contemporary shape to the cultural and economic transformations now widely known as 'globalisation'? How can something that is in significant ways embedded, situated, and locally produced also travel? What is not in doubt is that it does travel - and travel with serious consequences. The international circulation of discourses and practices has become a pressing issue for scholars who try to understand their operation in their own particular cultural contexts. This collection of essays seeks a constructive comparative view of these tendencies to convergence and divergence.

Book excerpt: This open access volume identifies the common and specific aspects of social mechanisms that generate inequalities, through comparative analyses of different dimensions in which inequalities are expressed. It includes studies on social inequalities in 5 European and 5 Latin American countries, along 11 thematic axes: inequalities in the labour market and labour trajectories; asymmetries in the relationship between training and employment; inequalities in work and family life; educational inequalities; geographical and social inequalities: ethnicity and language; social inequalities, migration and space; uncertainty, strategies, resources and capabilities; inequality of opportunity: intergenerational social mobility; social policies; gender inequalities; and research methodology. This volume is the result of a large collaborative project on social inequality funded by the European Commission: the International Network for Comparative Analysis of Social Inequalities. Taking into account diverse perspectives and approximations, the collaborators have created a general analytical framework as a model of analysis of social inequalities. The various contributions in this volume help readers gain a global outlook and help reflect on social inequalities in a comparative perspective. This volume addresses social science graduate and postgraduate students, researchers, social policy makers, as well as a broader academic audience interested in social inequality.
Book Synopsis Socio-Economic Effects and Recovery Efforts for the Rental Industry: Post-COVID-19 Strategies by : Korstanje, Maximiliano
Download or read book Socio-Economic Effects and Recovery Efforts for the Rental Industry: Post-COVID-19 Strategies written by Korstanje, Maximiliano and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2021-05-28 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The COVID-19 pandemic caused a disruption for many industries at its emergence, including the rental industry. The rental industry consists of more than just car rentals. It also includes Airbnb, house rentals, cruises, and other means of transport. This industry, which relies on tourism, was negatively affected by the travel restrictions that were put in place due to the pandemic. As such, it had to quickly adapt and grow to abide by the rules of the “new normal” in order to survive both during the pandemic, as well as implement new models and strategies that would help it to regain its success post-COVID-19. Socio-Economic Effects and Recovery Efforts for the Rental Industry: Post-COVID-19 Strategies is a critical reference book that discusses the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the rental industry and the ways in which the rental industry adapted under the new global restrictions affecting tourism. This book covers recovery efforts for the rental industry, analyzes global cases of the effects and adaptations the rental industry has undergone, and discusses the sociological aspects of the pandemic. While highlighting topics such as e-commerce, financial leasing, second home tourism, and sharing economies, this book is essential for executives, business owners, managers, rental agencies, ridesharing companies, academicians, researchers, and students interested in the current state of the rental industry and how it plans to overcome the challenges caused by the pandemic.

The book will be invaluable for students, lecturers and researchers of social and labour market policies and policy makers. It is essential reading for those interested in issues of inclusion, activation and the role of types of work in promoting inclusion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Youth and the Politics of the Present presents a range of topical sociological investigations into various aspects of the everyday practices of young adults in different European contexts. Indeed, this volume provides an original and provocative investigation of various current central issues surrounding the effects of globalization and the directions in which Western societies are steering their future.
