So gibt es inzwischen kaum einen Lebensbereich bei uns, in dem er nicht Bedeutung erlangt hätte. Die Beschäftigung mit Umweltfragen hat so sehr zugenommen, dass man bereits von einem Modethema sprechen kann. Es gibt mittlerweile eine Fülle von allgemeiner Umweltliteratur mit einer Flut von Ratschlägen und Verbrauchertipps. Obwohl das Thema Umweltschutz in aller Munde ist, wird oft übersehen, dass sich ein weltweites Bewusstsein für die Umweltproblematik und Bewegungen für die Umwelt in vielen Ländern erst vor einigen Jahrzehnten herausgebildet haben. Gegenstand einer großen Anzahl von empirischen Untersuchungen und theoretischen Analysen sind seit Jahren Protestbewegungen und alternative politische Orientierungen in entwickelten westlichen Industriestaaten. Nur wenige Sozialwissenschaftler, die an der westlichen Bewegungsforschung beteiligt sind, haben bisher versucht ihre Erklärungsansätze auf ehemalige sozialistische Systeme zu übertragen. In den sozialistischen Ländern sind wiederum die Gruppenphänomene mit soziologischen Methoden nur unzureichend erforscht worden, sicherlich aufgrund der Abhängigkeiten der soziologischen Forschungseinrichtungen von politischen Organisationen. Es mangelt an einer breiteren Diskussion über die Bemühungen für den Umweltschutz, die im Rahmen verschieden strukturierter politischer Systeme unternommen worden sind. Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Umweltbewegung, die sich in der ehemaligen Deutschen Demokratischen Republik herausgebildet hat. Im Mittelpunkt steht dabei die Frage, welche Besonderheiten aber auch welche Parallelen die ostdeutsche Umweltbewegung im Vergleich zur westdeutschen Umweltbewegung aufzeigt. The communist dictatorship, however, had sought to confront environmental issues since at least the 1960s. Through an analysis of official and oppositional sources, Saving Nature Under Socialism complicates attitudes toward the environment in East Germany by tracing both domestic and transnational engagement with nature and pollution. The communist dictatorship limited opportunities for protest, so officials and activists looked abroad to countries such as Poland and West Germany for inspiration and support. Julia Ault outlines the evolution of environmental policy and protest in East Germany and shows how East Germans responded to local degradation as well as to an international moment of environmental reckoning in the 1970s and 1980s. The example of East Germany thus challenges and broadens our understanding of the 'greening' of post-war Europe, and illuminates a larger, central European understanding of connection across the Iron Curtain.
