Book excerpt: Spanning the three decades of the deadly Sri Lankan civil war, Ummath highlights the plight of women across communal and ethnic divides. Through the lives of three women, Thawakkul, Yoga and Theivanai - one a social activist, the other a Tamil Tiger forced into joining the movement as a child, and the third a disillusioned fighter for the Eelam - the novel lays bare the complex equations that ruled life in Sri Lankan society during and in the aftermath of the civil war. In Ummath, Sharmila Seyyid - once forced to live in exile for her outspoken, liberal views - interrogates Islamist fundamentalism, Tamil nationalism and Sri Lankan majoritarian chauvinism with her characteristic courage, honesty and sensitivity.

Book excerpt: The Spiritual Leader explains with copious evidence the views held by other religions too that the truth La Ilaha Illallah, that being the lifeline of Tawheed and that there is no Ilah (creation) but Allah. He has thrown a challenge to anyone who can disprove this truth offering a handsome reward. Until now no one has come forward to take up his challenge. Allah is an arbitrary name and it does not point to something static or stationery. This name denotes something beyond time and space and the reach of human knowledge and has manifested as the whole universe. If one becomes aware of this truth, peace and tranquility will be eternal in his heart and mind.

Book excerpt: Upturning the traditional view of religion as a source of conflict, this book studies Islamic perspectives of international conflict resolution, re-interpreting the possibility of Israel-Palestine reconciliation beyond traditional secular frameworks. Beginning with an analysis of both classical and modern Islamic texts, the book provides a theoretical overview of Islamic conflict resolution before exploring the Israel-Palestine conflict in its historical, social and political dimensions. This framework allows for a real-world examination of Islamic conflict resolution in the context of Israel-Palestine theological debates. The author also critically assesses differing ideological and political views among Islamic scholars, divided by those supporting and those opposing a peace treaty between Israel and Palestine. Ultimately, it is argued that neglecting religion misses the opportunity to inject the spiritual dimension needed for reconciling the Israelis and Palestinians. The book’s multi-disciplinary approach will be of interest to a range of academics and policymakers, including those involved in International Relations and Islamic Studies. However, its accessible prose and engaging content will also appeal to undergraduates and general readers interested in Middle Eastern politics.

Book excerpt: "The son of a prominent Japanese mathematician who came to the United States after World War II, Ken Ono was raised on a diet of high expectations and little praise. Rebelling against his pressure-cooker of a life, Ken determined to drop out of high school to follow his own path. To obtain his father’s approval, he invoked the biography of the famous Indian mathematical prodigy Srinivasa Ramanujan, whom his father revered, who had twice flunked out of college because of his single-minded devotion to mathematics. Ono describes his rocky path through college and graduate school, interweaving Ramanujan’s story with his own and telling how at key moments, he was inspired by Ramanujan and guided by mentors who encouraged him to pursue his interest in exploring Ramanujan’s mathematical legacy. Picking up where others left off, beginning with the great English mathematician G.H. Hardy, who brought Ramanujan to Cambridge in 1914, Ono has devoted his mathematical career to understanding how in his short life, Ramanujan was able to discover so many deep mathematical truths, which Ramanujan believed had been sent to him as visions from a Hindu goddess. And it was Ramanujan who was ultimately the source of reconciliation between Ono and his parents. Ono’s search for Ramanujan ranges over three continents and crosses paths with mathematicians whose lives span the globe and the entire twentieth century and beyond. Along the way, Ken made many fascinating discoveries. The most important and surprising one of all was his own humanity."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book critically examines how the narrative of global economic competition was used to rationalize college preparatory curriculum for all high school students and promote charter schools in Detroit. Using mixed qualitative and quantitative methods, the study identifies neighborhood risk factors undermining students’ academic success, along with the positive effects of churches and service centers as mitigating forces. The authors focus on a range of topics and issues including market competition, urban decline, community resources, testing and accountability, smaller schools, and engaged learning. The volume illustrates how action studies by engaged scholars working with community activists empowers students to overcome emerging barriers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The minority question - what does a religious minority require to do in a democratic country in order to fulfill their duties as citizens of the country and also to attain public rights - is as old as the idea of democracy. Only the Muslim minority in India could give a rational, practical and informed answer to this question. There were innumerable researches conducted to identify and explain the material circumstances that facilitated them to come up with this answer, giving birth to arguments that are supportive and critical of the community. Most of these researches are available in the market in the form of books and biographies, even in Malayalam, though for the namesake. Now, what all might be the spiritual and intellectual factors that were at play in shaping this discovery? It is for sure that no political thinking would rise in the absence of it. This book springboards from an enquiry into this question. I was sure that I will find an answer if dug deep into the last three decades of Muslim League's history, or at least to 19th and 20th centuries. A generation that lived with history has more or less given way to the new carriers of the flame, completing their duty. Though not written or well-established, they had solid philosophical ideology with which they could draw a line between the political lines that they took and those behind them had taken. Since that knowledge has also faded into oblivion with them, this political ideology may cease to be a rootless bubble in the air. This book is an attempt to withstand that crisis. Therefor its main aim is to remind of the roots wherever its forgotten and inform with it the new generation. Along with that it aims to expose the unnecessary burden the community bears as a curse on its shoulder. This books also attempts to do a hairsplitting analysis of the accusations of social bifurcation, communalism, sectarianism etc. posed against the League by its enemies, unveiling the fluff in it to the public.
