Book Synopsis The Heirs to the Savoia Throne and the Construction of ‘Italianità’, 1860-1900 by : Maria Christina Marchi
Download or read book The Heirs to the Savoia Throne and the Construction of ‘Italianità’, 1860-1900 written by Maria Christina Marchi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-05-26 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the evolution of the role of the heirs to the throne of Italy between 1860 and 1900. It focuses on the future kings Umberto I (1844-1900) and Vittorio Emanuele III (1869-1947), and their respective spouses, Margherita of Savoia (1851-1926) and Elena of Montenegro (1873-1952). It sheds light on the soft power the Italian royals were attempting to generate, by identifying and examining four specific areas of monarchical activity: firstly, the heirs’ public role and the manner in which they attempted to craft an Italian identity through a process of self-presentation; secondly, the national, royal, linguistic and military education of the heirs; thirdly, the promotion of a family-centred dynasty deploying both male and female elements in the public realm; and finally the readiness to embrace different modes of mobility in the construction of italianità. By analysing the growing importance of the royal heirs and their performance on the public stage in post-Risorgimento Italy, this study investigates the attempted construction of a cohesive national identity through the crown and, more specifically, the heirs to the throne.

Download or read book The Assassins written by Jan Young and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2010-12-14 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forty-six historic tales of murder and mayhem on a global scale: This book contains true stories, authenticated through the use of both modern and contemporary sources. They range from the year 1337 BCE through 2006 CE, from the United States and Europe to the Mid-east and the Orient. The murderers range from incompetent to highly competent and from despicable to glorious. The victims were prominent politically and, in some cases, financially. Some deserved to die, most did not. All four assassinations of US Presidents are included, as are three attempted Presidential assassinations. Although the stories make interesting reading by themselves, the grouping of them in a single volume gives breadth and allows the reader to understand the scope of the assassination phenomenon, to see trends and to assess their value.

Book Synopsis Living Like Nomads by : Fausto Butta
Download or read book Living Like Nomads written by Fausto Butta and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-09-04 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the vast amount of research on Italian anarchism conducted over the last forty years, little is known about the history of Milanese anarchists. Living Like Nomads: The Milanese Anarchist Movement Before Fascism illuminates anarchist ideas, practices and militants in Milan during the two decades before the rise of fascism. It tells the fascinating stories of some Italian anarchists at the beginning of the twentieth century, and sheds light on their lifestyle, political campaigns and ideological debates. Living Like Nomads examines anarchist thought, particularly the relationship between theories of individualism and communist anarchism. It engages with masters of this school of philosophy such as Bakunin, Malatesta, Stirner and Kropotkin. By detailing the lives of unknown anarchists, it reveals the pivotal role played by anarchists – and anarchism – within the eclectic Italian Left. Milanese anarchists produced exciting initiatives and captivating ideological debates. While they did not cause a revolution in Milan, their importance cannot be overlooked. Anarchists in Milan gave birth to the first non-denominational modern school, campaigned against militarism, engaged with the labour movement, and published extensively. No other anarchist movement has published as much as Milanese anarchists did. While such anarchists did not prevent the rise of fascism in Italy, they were the first instance of anti-fascist resistance when they stood up against the violence of Mussolini’s black shirts after the First World War. Given anarchism’s principles of individual freedom, social justice and equality, this insightful study of the troubled history of anarchist movements contributes to a greater understanding of the modern Left.

Book Synopsis Violence and Legitimacy by : Volker Sellin
Download or read book Violence and Legitimacy written by Volker Sellin and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Benjamin Constant distinguished two kinds of government: unlawful government based on violence, and legitimate government based on the general will. In Europe monarchy was for over a thousand years considered the natural form of legitimate government. The sources of its legitimacy were the dynastic principle, religion, and the ability to protect against foreign aggression. At the end of the eighteenth century the revolutions in America and France called into question the traditional legitimacy of monarchy, but Volker Sellin shows that in response to this challenge monarchy opened up new sources of legitimacy by concluding alliances with constitutionalism, nationalism, and social reform. In some cases the age of revolution brought on a new type of leader, basing his claim to power on charisma.

Book Synopsis A Social History of Administrative Science in Italy by : Andrea Rapini
Download or read book A Social History of Administrative Science in Italy written by Andrea Rapini and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-01 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the origins, life and death of Administrative Science in Italy as an academic discipline between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It does so by combining the study of ideas, institutional history, intellectual history and social history. The Faculty of Law first introduced Administrative Science in 1875, with the aim of providing the elite with the necessary tools to distribute wealth more equally, to take care of the population and, thus, to make the young Italian State more legitimate in the eyes of the emerging masses. Law and social sciences were merged with the aim of increasing reforms, including that of creating a State of Happiness for all citizens. Throughout its 70-year existence, Administrative Science was deprived of its contents and scientific independence, and academically overshadowed by Administrative and Public law. Finally, although the liberal elites discarded the reformer project of Administrative Science even before Fascism turned everything upside down, most of the original traits of this knowledge were absorbed into Fascist corporate and totalitarian structures.

Download or read book Bombs, Bullets and Bread written by Michael Kemp and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2018-08-23 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a wave of political violence swept across the globe, causing widespread alarm. Described by the media of the day as "propaganda of the deed," assassinations, bombings and assaults carried out by anarchists--both individuals and conspirators--were intended to incite revolution and established the precedents of modern terrorism. Much has been written about these actions and the responses to them yet little attention has been given to the actors themselves. Drawing on wide range of sources, the author profiles numerous insurgents, their deeds and their motives.
