Ultrashort pulses have been known to have non Beer-Lambert behavior, whereas continuous waves (CW) obey the Beer-Lambert law. People have expected that the ultrashort pulse loses less intensity for a given distance in water than CW which implies that the pulse can travel over longer distances. In order to understand this characteristic of the pulse, we model numerically its spectral and temporal evolution as a function of traveling distance through water. We achieve the pulse intensity attenuation with traveling distance, obtain the temporal envelope of the pulse and compare them with experimental data. This research proves that the spectral and temporal profile of a pulse can be predicted knowing only the intensity spectrum of the input pulse and the refractive index spectrum of water in the linear regime. The real feasibility and the advantage of using an ultrashort pulse as a communication carrier will also be discussed.

Book excerpt: The major objectives of this proposal are twofold. The first objective is to perform both an experimental and theoretical study of the factors affecting the propagation distance behavior of ultrashort (femtosecond) laser pulses in water. This study will be conducted in the so-called linear regime which involves laser intensities that are below the threshold where nonlinear effects set in. A fundamental problem, which will be resolved by this research, is whether or not the temporal width and spacing of short pulses affects its absorption spectrum. If one simply knows the spectral composition of the input pulse and the absorption spectrum of the water, is this sufficient to predict the temporal evolution of the pulse? If such is not the case, then we will have to consider the way the system responds to pulse widths and pulse spacing which are short compared to vibrational relaxation times in water. The second phase of the research will be to explore the nonlinear regime where dramatic changes to the temporal, spatial, and spectral properties of the medium occur. The primary processes being selffocusing and self-phase modulation due to the Kerr effect (also called the quadratic electro-optic effect which was discovered by John Kerr in 1875). Self-focusing can lead to an enormous increase in the peak intensity where long filaments can occur and in some cases lead to supercontinuum generation or "white light" generation first discovered in 1970.

Book excerpt: First, we investigate the Bouguer-Lambert-Beer (BLB) law as applied to the transmission of ultrashort pulses through water in the linear absorption regime. We present a linear theory for propagation of ultrashort laser pulses, and related experimental results are in excellent agreement with this theory. Thus we conclude that recent claims of the BLB law violations are inconsistent with the experimental data obtained by our group. Second, we study the dynamics of ultrashort pulses in a Lorentz medium and in water via the saddle point method. It shows that the saddle point method is a more efficient and faster method than the direct integration method to study one-dimensional pulse propagation over macroscopic distances (that is, distance comparable to the wavelength) in a general dielectric medium. Comments are also made about the exponential attenuation of the generalized Sommerfeld and Brillouin precursors. By applying the saddle point method, we also determined that the pulse duration estimated by the group velocity dispersion (GVD) approximation is within 2% of the value computed with the actual refractive index for a propagation distance of 6 m in water.

Book excerpt: The propagation of ultrashort femtosecond laser pulses in linear dielectric materials is determined in the time, space, and frequency domains by linear Maxwell optics through dispersion and diffraction. For intense pulses, pulse propagation is additionally modified by nonlinearities in the medium such as the optical Kerr effect, plasma generation, and self-phase modulation. In this work we report the results of several experiments on the propagation of ultrashort pulses. In the linear regime, we characterize the temporal evolution of an ultrashort pulse during propagation through a linear dielectric under anomalous dispersion. Under these conditions the pulse evolution departs from the group velocity and group delay dispersion approximations, which leads to the formation of optical precursors. We describe an experiment which observes the propagation of optical precursors in a bulk condensed-matter dielectric. We generate ultrashort laser pulses and propagate the pulses through a bulk dye with an absorption resonance turned to the center wavelength of the femotsecond pulse. The pulse is then characterized in the time domain before and after propagation. Through numerical simulation we verify that the behavior of the precursors in the temporal pulse profille corresponds with the classical model. Under very high intensity laser pulses, the nonlinearities induced by the propagation of the intense ultrashort pulse produce changes in the complex refractive index of the nonlinear material. We report the results of experiments involving time-resolved imaging of the propagation of ultrashort pulses in dielectric materials. We experimentally observe and characterize these effects through a weak-probe imaging effect which directly measures the nonlinearity in a time-resolved manner. In these experiments an intense femtosecond laser pulse is propagated in a nonlinear intensity regime while an unfocused low-intensity femtosecond pulse is used as to probe the nonlinear pulse. We use this technique to characterize femtosecond pulses in air and liquid, especially in the regime of optical filamentation. We subsequently calculate parameters such as the plasma density, the transverse extent, and the instantaneous refractive index within the femtosecond laser fillament under conditions which are not accessible through most standard pulse measurement techniqes. Shapiro edited the book entitled Ultrashort Light Pulses (Topics Appl. Phys., Vol. 18), which was written by eight experts in the field. Six years later, Charles V. Shank added a bibliography (1980-1983) in the second edition with approximately one thousand new references. During the past decade the field has grown so rapidly that a completely new book had to be written. In particular, the reduction of the time scale of light pulses into the femtosecond range has opened up new experimental possibilities never even foreseen in the preceding literature. The vast literature with countless ideas and applications makes it impossible for a single person to write a comprehensive review. Nine scientists, actively working in the field since its beginning, have decided to join forces to prepare a new book describing the present state of the art. Emphasis is placed on the generation and numerous applications of ultrashort laser pulses. This book covers a wide area of science: physics, engineering, chemistry, and biology. The various chapters and sections are prepared in each case such that the reader is given a brief introduction to the specific subject. Ample references for a more detailed study are given at the end of each chapter.

However this broadband content is subject to dispersion and hence the pulse duration of corresponding ultrashort pulses may be stretched accordingly. I used a commercially-available adaptive ultrashort pulse shaper featuring multiphoton intrapulse interference phase scan technology to characterise and compensate for the dispersion of the optical system in situ and conducted experimental and theoretical studies in various inter-linked topics relating to the light-matter interaction. Firstly, I examined the role of broadband ultrashort pulses in novel light-matter interacting systems involving optically co-trapped particle systems in which inter-particle light scattering occurs between optically-bound particles. Secondly, I delivered dispersion-compensated broadband ultrashort pulses in a dispersive microscope system to investigate the role of pulse duration in a biological light-matter interaction involving laser-induced cell membrane permeabilisation through linear and nonlinear optical absorption. Finally, I examined some of the propagation characteristics of broadband ultrashort pulse propagation using a computer-controlled spatial light modulator. The propagation characteristics of ultrashort pulses is of paramount importance for defining the light-matter interaction in systems. The ability to control ultrashort pulse propagation by using adaptive dispersion compensation enables chirp-free ultrashort pulses to be used in experiments requiring the shortest possible pulses for a specified spectral bandwidth. Ultrashort pulsed beams may be configured to provide high peak intensities over long propagation lengths, for example, using novel beam shapes such as Bessel-type beams, which has applications in biological light-matter interactions including phototransfection based on laser-induced cell membrane permeabilisation. The need for precise positioning of the beam focus on the cell membrane becomes less strenuous by virtue of the spatial properties of the Bessel beam. Dispersion compensation can be used to control the temporal properties of ultrashort pulses thus permitting, for example, a high peak intensity to be maintained along the length of a Bessel beam, thereby reducing the pulse energy required to permeabilise the cell membrane and potentially reduce damage therein.

Book excerpt: Femtosecond laser pulses with millijoule energy have the potential to be used in many applications for remote sensing in marine environments. In this dissertation, we investigate some of the basic phenomena involved when a loosely focused, potentially filament-forming millijoule femtosecond laser pulse propagating in air interacts with an air-water interface. As an introduction to the primary investigation, we discuss concepts and experiments relevant to the primary investigation: the interaction of millijoule femtosecond laser pulses with an air-water interface. We first discuss linear femtosecond pulse propagation in water and describe an experiment investigating pulse attenuation behavior in water in the linear pulse propagation regime. We find no deviations from exponential attenuation, in contradiction to some earlier works. We then discuss nonlinear pulse propagation in water and describe an experiment investigating the onset of nonlinear pulse propagation and spectral transformation in water. We find that nonlinear femtosecond pulse propagation begins at a peak pulse intensity of about 1010 W/cm2. This experiment provides a convenient segway into the discussion and investigation of femtosecond laser filaments. We describe an experiment in which two filaments interact within liquid methanol and exchange energy. We then discuss laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy and demonstrate that different LIBS signal intensity thresholds can be utilized to image shallowly buried objects. Finally, all of these concepts are brought together to discuss the interaction of millijoule femtosecond laser pulses with an air-water interface. We catalogue and describe the main phenomena involved, which span about 12 orders of magnitude in time. We then describe the characteristics of the acoustic shockwaves generated by this interaction and demonstrate the usefulness of millijoule femtosecond laser pulses in several remote sensing applications in marine environments.
